Why Make Apple Cider in the Instant Pot?

The Instant Pot isn’t just a kitchen gadget; it’s a game-changer for homemade apple cider. While traditional methods can take hours of simmering on the stovetop, demanding constant attention, the Instant Pot significantly cuts down on cooking time and effort. Its pressure cooking functionality allows the flavors from the apples, citrus, and spices to meld and intensify much faster, resulting in a robust, deeply flavored cider in a fraction of the time. This means you can enjoy that comforting, “cooked all day” taste without actually spending all day in the kitchen. Plus, it’s a hands-off process once set, freeing you to enjoy other fall activities!

What You Need for This Delicious Apple Cider

Crafting this incredible Instant Pot apple cider requires just a few simple, wholesome ingredients. The beauty lies in their natural flavors coming together to create an unforgettable drink. Here are the star components of this irresistibly cozy cider recipe:

  • Apples: The foundation of any great apple cider! We highly recommend using a combination of both sweet and tart apple varieties for a perfectly balanced flavor profile. Think Granny Smith for tartness and Fuji, Honeycrisp, or Gala for sweetness. However, don’t feel limited – any apples you have on hand or find on sale will work wonderfully. This recipe is incredibly forgiving, ensuring no apple goes to waste!
  • Citrus: Fresh orange and lemon slices are essential. Beyond their refreshing brightness, these citrus fruits play a crucial role in preserving the apple cider naturally, adding a zesty counterpoint to the sweetness and enhancing the overall flavor complexity. They elevate the apple flavor rather than overpowering it.
  • Warming Spices: These are the heart and soul of fall flavor. Our blend includes whole cinnamon sticks, aromatic whole cloves, fragrant allspice berries, a hint of ground nutmeg, and a touch of cardamom. These cozy spices, when pressure cooked with the fruit, release their essential oils and deepen the delicious apple cider flavor, creating an incredibly rich and inviting aroma throughout your home.
  • Sweeteners: We opt for natural sweeteners in this recipe. Pure maple syrup adds a wonderful earthy sweetness that beautifully complements the apple flavor, while a touch of coconut sugar provides a subtle caramel note. These natural options allow you to control the sweetness without relying on refined sugars, creating a healthier and more flavorful drink.
  • Water: As the primary liquid base, water is crucial. During pressure cooking, the water effectively extracts all the incredible flavors from the fruit, spices, and sweeteners, transforming into a fragrant and delicious cider.

Instant Pot Apple Cider: Creative Variations & Expert Tips

Apple Selection: We genuinely mean it – this recipe is incredibly versatile! Feel free to use any apples you have on hand, whatever is currently on sale, or your absolute favorite varieties. A mix of sweet and tart apples typically yields the most complex and satisfying flavor, but there are truly no “bad” apples for making delicious cider. Embrace the bounty of the season!

Adjusting Sweetness: Once your apple cider is prepared and strained, take a moment to taste it. Everyone’s preference for sweetness varies, so if you find it isn’t sweet enough for your liking, simply add pure maple syrup, a teaspoon at a time, stirring well after each addition, until it reaches your desired level of sweetness. You could also experiment with brown sugar or honey for different flavor notes.

Spice It Up: Don’t hesitate to customize the spice blend to your preference. For an extra kick, consider adding a few slices of fresh ginger or a couple of star anise pods to the Instant Pot. If you prefer a milder spice profile, you can reduce the amount of cloves or allspice. A pinch of ground ginger or a whole vanilla bean (if not already using) can also add wonderful complexity.

Adding a Fruity Twist: For an extra layer of fruit flavor, you can add a handful of fresh cranberries or a few slices of pear to the Instant Pot alongside the apples and citrus. These additions will infuse the cider with subtle tartness or sweetness, creating a unique spin on the classic.

Frequently Asked Questions About Instant Pot Apple Cider

Do I need to peel the apples before making apple cider?

Absolutely not! There’s no need to peel the apples for this recipe. Simply core them and cut them into quarters. The apple peels contribute valuable flavor, color, and nutrients to the cider, and since you’ll be straining the mixture later, their texture won’t affect the final drink.

Should apple cider be served hot or cold?

The wonderful thing about homemade apple cider is its versatility! It’s utterly delicious served straight from the refrigerator, offering a refreshing and crisp taste. However, for ultimate comfort on a chilly day, warming it up gently on the stovetop or in the microwave makes it incredibly soothing and aromatic. It’s truly a matter of personal preference and the weather!

Can I use apple juice instead of water as the base?

While this recipe is designed to extract maximum flavor from fresh apples and water, you could certainly use unsweetened apple juice instead of water for an even richer, more intense apple flavor from the start. Just be mindful of the sweetness level and adjust your added sweeteners accordingly.

What is the difference between apple cider and apple juice?

Apple juice is typically filtered to remove all pulp and sediment, then pasteurized for a longer shelf life, resulting in a clear, sweet beverage. Apple cider, especially homemade, is usually unfiltered, giving it a cloudier appearance and a richer, more complex flavor. It’s often unpasteurized or lightly pasteurized and has a shorter shelf life. Essentially, cider is a less processed, more robust version of apple juice.

Proper Storage for Your Homemade Apple Cider

Once prepared, your homemade Instant Pot apple cider can be stored in an airtight container or pitcher in the refrigerator for up to 7 days. You might even notice that the flavor intensifies and deepens the longer it sits, allowing the spices to truly marry with the fruit. Enjoy this delightful beverage chilled straight from the fridge, or gently reheat it on the stovetop or in a microwave before serving for that ultimate cozy experience.

Freezing Apple Cider to Enjoy All Winter Long

Did you know you can easily freeze apple cider? This is a fantastic way to preserve the delicious flavors of fall and enjoy them well into the colder winter months! Simply transfer the cooled apple cider to any freezer-safe container(s), leaving a little headspace for expansion. It will keep beautifully in the freezer for up to 3 months.

For convenient individual portions or a delightful flavor boost, we love to freeze apple cider in ice cube trays. These “cider cubes” are perfect for adding a pop of fall flavor to cocktails (like our spiked apple cider cocktail) or non-alcoholic sparkling drinks. Alternatively, pour the cider into silicone soup cubes – these larger portions are ideal for a single, cozy mug of apple cider. When ready to enjoy, let the frozen cider thaw in the refrigerator, then enjoy it cold or heat until warmed through for a comforting beverage.

Ingredients

  • 14 apples, cored and quartered (a mix of sweet and tart is recommended)
  • 1 large orange, sliced
  • 1 lemon, sliced
  • 1/4 cup pure maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon whole cloves
  • 1 tablespoon whole allspice
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 tablespoon pumpkin spice seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon coconut sugar
  • 1 vanilla bean, split lengthwise
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 8 cups water

Instructions

  • Place all the cored and quartered apples, sliced orange, sliced lemon, maple syrup, whole cloves, whole allspice, cinnamon sticks, pumpkin spice seasoning, coconut sugar, vanilla bean, salt, and water into the Instant Pot insert. Ensure all ingredients are submerged as much as possible.

  • Secure the lid on the Instant Pot. Make sure the pressure release valve is set to the “Sealing” position.
  • Set the Instant Pot to “Manual” or “Pressure Cook” on high pressure for 20 minutes. Due to the large volume of liquid, the Instant Pot will take approximately 15 minutes to build pressure before the cooking timer begins.
  • Once the cooking cycle is complete, perform a quick release of the pressure by carefully turning the pressure release valve to the “Venting” position. Once all the steam has been released and the float valve drops, carefully uncover the Instant Pot. Using a potato masher or a sturdy wooden spoon, thoroughly mash all the softened apples, oranges, and lemons until they reach a thick, applesauce-like consistency. This helps extract maximum flavor.

Mashing the fruit and spices after cooking to release all their delicious flavors.
  • Allow the apple cider mash mixture to cool down considerably. This cooling process typically takes about an hour, making it safer and easier to handle for the next step.
  • Once the apple cider mash has cooled, carefully pour the entire mixture through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth-lined colander. Position the sieve over a large pitcher or container to catch the beautifully clear apple cider, pressing down on the solids to extract as much liquid as possible. Discard the leftover pulp.
  • Taste the finished apple cider. If you prefer it sweeter, add additional pure maple syrup a teaspoon at a time, stirring well after each addition, until it reaches your desired sweetness level.
  • Store your freshly made apple cider in an airtight container in the refrigerator and enjoy it either cold or gently warmed up for a cozy treat!

Tips & Notes

  • Storage: Store homemade apple cider in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 7 days. The flavors will continue to deepen over time, making it even more delicious!
  • Freezing Instructions: For extended enjoyment, transfer cooled apple cider to freezer-safe containers, leaving some space for expansion. Freeze for up to 3 months. For individual servings, consider freezing in ice cube trays (great for cocktails!) or silicone soup cubes (perfect for a single mug). Thaw in the refrigerator overnight, then enjoy cold or reheat gently.
  • Sweetness Adjustment: After straining, always taste your cider. If you desire a sweeter profile, gradually add pure maple syrup (or your preferred sweetener) one teaspoon at a time, stirring thoroughly, until you achieve the perfect balance for your palate.
