A spontaneous adventure to Sedona, Arizona, had long been a dream for us. What began as a whispered wish to book a last-minute flight to an unknown destination transformed into a breathtaking reality, delivering an unforgettable escape filled with stunning landscapes, thrilling hikes, and a truly memorable moment that definitely wasn’t in the itinerary!

Embracing Spontaneity: Our Last-Minute Sedona Getaway
Sedona! The name itself conjures images of vibrant red rocks and endless skies. For Mark’s birthday, we finally made the leap and booked a last-minute trip to this Arizona gem. The idea of a truly spontaneous getaway, where the destination was chosen almost on a whim, had been on our bucket list for ages. After some playful deliberation between booking the morning of or the night before our departure, practicality won, and we secured our flights the evening prior for a 6 AM takeoff. This decision set the stage for an adventure that exceeded all expectations.
Mastering Travel with Southwest Rapid Rewards and the Companion Pass
As a devoted Southwest Airlines enthusiast, I’m always strategizing with their Rapid Rewards points. This trip was a perfect showcase of the program’s incredible value, as we managed to fly both of us to and from Phoenix without spending a dime on airfare! My accumulated points covered my ticket, and just last month, I achieved Southwest’s coveted Companion Pass status. For those unfamiliar, the Companion Pass is a game-changer: every time I fly Southwest, my designated companion (in this case, Mark) flies free, even if my ticket was booked with points! Earning this pass means I get to enjoy its benefits for the remainder of this year and all of next year. It’s an absolute dream for any frequent traveler, turning bucket-list trips into affordable realities.
Beyond the financial savings, the primary goal of this surprise excursion was to dedicate quality time to each other, away from the daily routines and distractions. Sedona proved to be the ideal choice, not only aligning perfectly with our budget but also offering unparalleled opportunities for our favorite pastime: hiking. The majestic red rock landscapes are an open invitation to explore, providing a stunning backdrop for connection and adventure.
Navigating Last-Minute Accommodation: Our Experience at Poco Diablo Resort
When it came to lodging, we decided to try Priceline for the first time for a last-minute booking. While the allure of potential savings was strong, our initial experience was less than ideal. We encountered a frustrating situation where the displayed price increased significantly during the booking process – a classic bait-and-switch scenario. Despite our irritation, we proceeded, eager to secure a place to stay, and ended up at the Poco Diablo Resort. Unfortunately, our room assignment seemed to reflect our “Priceline status,” as we were given what felt like the least desirable room on the property. We endured an hour of incessant dog barking at 9:30 PM, followed by a lively wedding party celebrating right outside our window until 2 AM. Given our plans for an early 6 AM hike and the two-hour time difference from Minneapolis, quality sleep was crucial, and we were sorely lacking it.
However, the resort staff demonstrated excellent customer service the following morning. After explaining our predicament, they promptly switched our room and, to our delight, upgraded us for the second night. This swift and positive resolution completely turned our experience around, transforming an initial disappointment into a testament to their hospitality.
Exploring Sedona’s Majestic Trails: A Hiker’s Paradise
Our journey began with an early 7 AM landing in Phoenix, and by 10 AM, we had arrived in the heart of Sedona, ready to immerse ourselves in its beauty. This gave us a full day plus two half-days to explore, indulge, hike, and simply enjoy the serene atmosphere. Our itinerary was thoughtfully paced: Day 1 was dedicated to relaxation by the pool, Day 2 involved our most challenging and rewarding hike, and Day 3 offered a more moderate, yet equally enjoyable, trek. Let’s delve into the hiking adventures that defined our trip!
The Ascent of Bear Mountain: A Challenging Path to Panoramic Vistas
Our first major hike took us to Bear Mountain, a trail known for its demanding ascent and incredible rewards. This particular hike holds a rather infamous memory for me, as it was during this trek that I had an entirely unexpected, shall we say, “wilderness moment.” Despite having had my morning coffee and a pre-hike pit stop, nature called with an urgency I hadn’t anticipated. It was a true test of preparedness, and thankfully, Mark had the foresight to pack toilet paper. The silver lining to our brief detour off the main trail was the privacy it afforded – a lucky coincidence that spared me from an incredibly awkward encounter with fellow hikers. It was an unforgettable, albeit slightly comical, reminder of the unpredictable nature of outdoor adventures!
Beyond that memorable personal interlude, the Bear Mountain trail presented its own set of challenges. It wasn’t always clearly marked, adding an extra layer of navigation to an already strenuous climb. Nevertheless, the hike itself was magnificent. Upon reaching the summit, we chatted with some friendly locals who expressed surprise that tourists like us had chosen Bear Mountain, as it’s not one of Sedona’s more heavily trafficked or mainstream trails. We had Monique from the FFF’s Instagram community to thank for this excellent recommendation, and it certainly lived up to its billing. AllTrails accurately describes Bear Mountain as a moderately trafficked, hard trail, and we wholeheartedly agree. The 6-mile round trip was a rigorous workout, aptly justifying its “mountain” designation.
What truly captivated us about Bear Mountain was its relative solitude and the unparalleled 360-degree views it offered of the entire valley. There’s something profoundly satisfying about reaching the peak of a challenging hike and gazing down upon the vast world below, feeling a sense of accomplishment and awe. The panoramic vistas, stretching to the horizon, were a breathtaking reward for every strenuous step. Our only regret was not packing more water; our five liters, while substantial, proved just barely adequate after a 30-minute detour where we temporarily lost the trail, making us realize the importance of ample hydration in the Arizona sun.

The Intriguing Journey on Soldier Pass Trail: Red Rocks and Hidden Wonders
Our second hike led us to Soldier Pass, another iconic Sedona trail, albeit one that also presented navigation challenges. Similar to Bear Mountain, we found the trail markings to be somewhat ambiguous. We suspected that the AllTrails map we were relying on might have contributed to our confusion, leading us off course. What was supposed to be a moderate 4.2-mile loop transformed into a roughly 5.5 to 6-mile adventure. While we didn’t mind the extended mileage, the nearly 45 minutes we spent off-trail were punctuated by a slight apprehension of stumbling upon a snake – a quintessential Arizona concern we were keen to avoid!
Despite the navigational hiccups, Soldier Pass offers a fascinating journey through Sedona’s landscape, featuring several notable landmarks such as Devil’s Kitchen, the Seven Sacred Pools, and the popular Soldier Pass Caves. These natural wonders provide intriguing points of interest and photo opportunities along the way. This hike was perfectly suited for our second day, providing a less strenuous but equally engaging adventure after the intensity of Bear Mountain. It allowed us to appreciate the unique geological formations and vibrant colors of the red rocks at a slightly more relaxed pace, cementing our love for Sedona’s diverse trail offerings.

Savoring Sedona: A Culinary Tour of Local Flavors
While my camera was focused on capturing Sedona’s magnificent landscapes, the culinary experiences were equally memorable, even if I didn’t snap any food photos. When on vacation, I love to switch gears and fully immerse myself in the moment, especially during dinner when the ambiance is often dimly lit and perfect for unwinding. Despite the lack of visual evidence, I can certainly share our gastronomic highlights! We indulged in a variety of dining establishments, ranging from lively cantinas to cozy breakfast spots, thanks to the fantastic recommendations from the FFF’s Instagram community:
- 89 Agave Cantina: Our go-to for refreshing margaritas and seemingly bottomless chips and salsa – a perfect casual start to an evening.
- Elote Cafe: This was a must-visit, and we aimed to try a significant portion of their renowned menu. The vibrant flavors and unique approach to Mexican cuisine made it a standout experience.
- Wildflower Bread Company: Ideal for fresh pastries, sandwiches, and a relaxed meal, offering a comforting and wholesome option.
- Coffee Pot Restaurant: A classic breakfast spot known for its extensive menu, especially the fluffy pancakes and customizable omelets, fueling us up for our hiking adventures.
- Sedona Pizza Company: Sometimes, a simple, delicious pizza is all you need after a long day of hiking, and they delivered!
- Javelina Cantina: Another fantastic spot for margaritas and authentic Mexican dishes in a lively setting.
- Oak Creek Brewing Company: We stopped here for some local brews and savory BBQ, a great way to unwind and taste the local craft scene.
As our dining choices clearly reflect, we have a particular fondness for Mexican cuisine – especially when it involves delicious margaritas and endless chips – and hearty breakfast options to energize our days. One slight disappointment was the local beer scene. It appeared that the typical Sedona visitor tends to lean more towards wine, which meant fewer craft beer options than we might have hoped for. Nevertheless, the food recommendations were exceptional, and we’re incredibly grateful to everyone who shared their favorite spots!
Reflections on Our Sedona Escape: More Than Just a Trip
In conclusion, our surprise trip to Sedona was nothing short of magical. Beyond the stunning red rock vistas and exhilarating hikes, what truly made this getaway special was the precious quality time we spent together. In the hustle of everyday life, it’s easy to let moments of true connection slip away, but this trip allowed us to fully reconnect and create lasting memories. Downtown Sedona itself is charming and vibrant, offering a plethora of shops, galleries, and additional dining options.
Our only regret was not having more time to explore the countless other hiking trails within a five-mile radius. Sedona is truly a hiker’s paradise, with something for every skill level, and we barely scratched the surface. From the thrill of a last-minute booking facilitated by smart travel hacking to the unexpected moments on the trails and the delicious local flavors, our Sedona adventure was a perfect blend of excitement, challenge, and serene beauty. It was a trip that reminded us of the joy of spontaneity and the profound beauty of Arizona’s red rock country.
