Fit Foodie HQ Mid-Century Modern Home Office Reveal

The day is finally here for our home office reveal! While I’m notoriously bad at keeping secrets (especially on Instagram, where you might have caught glimpses of the progress), I couldn’t wait any longer to share what we’ve accomplished so far. Although the journey isn’t entirely complete – with new windows arriving in mid-December and Phase 2 of the office transformation on the horizon – the current state is simply too exciting not to showcase. Our vision for a bright, inspiring, and functional workspace has truly come to life, and we’re eager to walk you through the design choices and practical solutions that make this space uniquely ours.

The Renovation Journey: Transforming Our Mid-Century Modern Office

Embarking on a renovation project always brings its own set of challenges and triumphs. For our Fit Foodie HQ home office, we were fortunate to avoid major structural changes like knocking down walls. However, the list of necessary updates and improvements was still quite extensive, transforming a seemingly small undertaking into a comprehensive refresh. Our primary goal was to honor the character of our 1939-built home while integrating modern touches and finishes that align with our brand’s aesthetic.

Here’s a breakdown of the key steps we undertook to bring our vision to life:

  • Fresh Paint: We opted for Pure White (SW 7005) by Sherwin-Williams, creating a clean, airy, and bright canvas for our mid-century modern design. This choice instantly opened up the space and enhanced natural light.
  • Baseboard and Trim Replacement: To achieve a crisp, updated look, we removed and replaced all the old baseboards and trim, ensuring a seamless transition with the new paint. This seemingly minor detail significantly elevates the room’s finish.
  • Wall Patching: Our vintage home came with its quirks, requiring extensive wall patching to smooth out imperfections and create pristine surfaces ready for their new aesthetic. This was a crucial step in achieving a polished look.
  • New Lighting Installation: Upgrading the lighting was essential, not only for aesthetics but also for practical workspace illumination. We carefully selected fixtures that complement the mid-century modern theme.
  • Thoughtful Room Styling: The heart of the reveal, this involved curating every piece of furniture, decor, and plant to create a cohesive and inviting environment.
  • Windows and Window Trim (Upcoming): New windows are slated for installation in mid-December, which will further enhance energy efficiency and the overall aesthetic. The new trim will beautifully frame these additions.
  • Door Refinishing (Upcoming): To maintain consistency and elevate the entire space, the office door will also undergo a refinishing process.
  • Light Switch Replacement (Upcoming): Updating small details like light switches contributes significantly to a modern, cohesive feel.
  • Heat Register Refinishing (Upcoming): Even the heat registers will receive attention, ensuring every element of the room is refined and updated.

Looking at this list, it’s clear the project was more involved than initially perceived! Mark and I kicked things off by removing the old baseboards and trim ourselves, but finding reliable help for the patching took a good three months. Our home’s historic roots meant we wanted to replace all baseboards and trim on the entire main floor, alongside new windows and lighting throughout. This commitment ensures that while our home retains its original charm, it’s infused with modern functionality and style, offering the best of both worlds.

Crafting the Aesthetic: Mid-Century Modern, White, and Bright

The first crucial step in styling and remodeling the Fit Foodie home office was defining its aesthetic through a comprehensive mood board. Countless hours were spent scouring Pinterest and Instagram for inspiration, allowing us to pinpoint the exact style we envisioned. The result? A unique blend we affectionately call “Mid-Century + White and Bright.” Our core desire was to cultivate an airy, luminous atmosphere, generously infused with lush greenery. Equally important was creating a space that not only inspires our team but also ensures their utmost comfort and productivity.

Following the general mood boarding phase, I transitioned to pinning specific products that resonated with our design vision. This detailed approach ensured every piece contributed to the overall harmony of the room. We extend a massive thank you to Overstock for their incredible support, sponsoring the majority of the products featured in this room. Please note, while the products were gifted, all opinions expressed are entirely my own. Overstock proved to be the ideal online retailer, offering an extensive selection that perfectly matched our needs – truly, #Iloveonlineshopping.

The Heart of Productivity: Our Functional Workspace

Designing a workspace for multiple people required careful consideration of both collaborative needs and individual comfort. Every element in this section was chosen for its blend of style and practicality, ensuring our Fit Foodie HQ team can work efficiently and harmoniously.

Collaborative Multi-Person Office Table

I never imagined a round table would be the centerpiece of this space, yet I am incredibly pleased with this choice! Our goal was to find a white, mid-century-esque table that was neither too imposing nor too small. This particular design comfortably accommodates three team members, with ample space for a fourth to join in a pinch. Its beautiful wooden legs and subtle black accents add a touch of sophistication, perfectly complementing the overall design scheme and fostering a sense of togetherness.

Ergonomic Mid-Century Modern Office Chairs

For seating, we maintained our commitment to the mid-century modern style. My primary objective was to perfectly match the wood tone of the chair legs with that of the table, creating a cohesive and polished look. The chairs we ultimately selected exceed expectations. Their simple, light grey upholstery offers a neutral base, while the sturdy oak legs provide an elegant contrast. Sold as a convenient set of two, these chairs are not only visually appealing but also offer comfort for extended work sessions, embodying our “white and bright” aesthetic.

Soft & Stylish Bohemian Rug

The rug in our office truly anchors the workspace, adding warmth and texture. We consciously chose a rectangular bohemian-style rug to provide a visual contrast to the circular shape of our dining table. Measuring a generous 5′ x 8′, this handmade wool rug introduces a subtle pattern without being overpowering, and its softness is truly exceptional underfoot. A key interior design tip for rugs placed under tables is to ensure the rug extends at least a foot beyond all edges of the table, allowing chairs to remain on the rug even when pulled out – a detail we meticulously followed for both aesthetics and functionality.

Illuminating the Space: Modern Lighting Solutions

Lighting plays a pivotal role in setting the mood and enhancing the functionality of any room, especially an office. Our selection was driven by a desire to introduce architectural interest while providing ample illumination.

Striking Sputnik Gold Fixture

From the outset, I envisioned some form of Sputnik lighting above our main table. This particular style immediately adds dynamic dimension and a contemporary edge to any space. While I briefly considered a flush-mount fixture, my heart was ultimately stolen by a stunning option from Overstock. This 17.5-inch gold fixture, adorned with Edison bulbs, boasts a unique feature: two different lengths from the ceiling. Given our office’s cozy, quaint dimensions and standard ceiling height, we smartly opted to remove half of the piping, allowing the fixture to hang perfectly, making a bold yet proportionate statement in the room.

Optimizing Organization: Smart Office Storage Solutions

In any functional office, efficient storage is paramount. For Fit Foodie HQ, this meant finding solutions that not only held our essentials but also contributed to the overall mid-century modern aesthetic. We focused on pieces that offer ample capacity without compromising on style.

Versatile Modern Buffet

Incorporating a buffet into our office design was a brilliant decision, offering invaluable additional storage for “all the random things” that accumulate in a busy workspace. This elegant piece now neatly houses administrative supplies, our extensive collection of styling fabrics for photography, and even conceals our printer. Its presence ensures that our creative and professional tools are always within reach, yet thoughtfully tucked away, maintaining a clean and uncluttered environment that fosters focus and creativity.

Functional Mid-Century Modern Shelves for Photography Props

A dedicated shelving unit for all our photography props was not just a desire, but an absolute necessity for Fit Foodie HQ. For nearly eight years, our diverse collection of props remained hidden away in disorganized boxes – a system that led to endless frustration. It was impossible to know what we owned, locate specific items, or find inspiration quickly. Now, with our beautifully exposed mid-century modern shelving unit, everything is not only visible and meticulously organized but also serves as a constant source of creative inspiration. This change has drastically improved our workflow, saving valuable time and enhancing our styling capabilities.

Embracing Nature: Our Lush Plant Wall and Planters

Bringing the outdoors in was a key design principle for the Fit Foodie HQ office. Our philosophy? The more plants, the merrier! Creating a vibrant plant wall and strategically placing planters throughout the room not only adds aesthetic beauty but also enhances the overall well-being and air quality of our workspace.

Dynamic Floating Shelf Plant Wall

The decision to install a floating shelf plant wall might just be the best design choice we made for this office! Our deep love for plants found its perfect expression here, and the impact has been transformative. This living wall introduces incredible dimension and an abundance of fresh greenery, visually expanding the space and infusing it with a serene, natural ambiance. We selected three 36-inch white floating shelves for this project, and I wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone seeking to add elegant, sturdy, and high-quality shelving. Their ease of installation made this inspiring feature a breeze to create.

Curated Collection of Small Pots

Our stunning plant wall is a carefully curated display of small pots, sourced from both the convenient selection at Overstock and the charming finds at Tonkadale, a local plant store in Minneapolis. Each pot contributes to the wall’s diverse texture and visual interest. Here’s a glimpse of our favorites, arranged from top left to bottom right: Pot 1, Pot 2, Pot 3, Pot 4 (from Tonkadale), Pot 5, Pot 6 (from Tonkadale), Pot 7, Pot 8, Pot 9, Pot 10, Pot 11, Pot 12 (from Tonkadale), Pot 13, and Pot 14. This variety creates a lush, thriving ecosystem within our office.

Beyond the impressive plant wall, we’ve strategically placed a selection of small pots around the room, ensuring additional pops of greenery. A personal favorite is this beautiful marble planter, which holds a prime spot on our buffet. Another beloved addition is this white and grey textured planter, often gracing our main office table, adding subtle sophistication and natural beauty.

Statement Planters and Hanging Greenery

While our plant wall is undoubtedly a focal point, we knew the room wouldn’t be complete without at least one large indoor plant to ground the space, along with one or two elegant hanging plants near the windows. This layered approach to greenery truly fills the room with life and energy. Indeed, for us, when it comes to plants, “the more, the merrier” is not just a saying, it’s a design fact!

Curated Accents: Thoughtful Office Decor

Every well-designed space benefits from carefully chosen decor elements that reflect personality and enhance the overall aesthetic. In our Fit Foodie HQ office, each piece serves to complement our mid-century modern, white and bright theme, adding visual interest and character.

Elegant Gold Circle Mirror

Placing a striking circle mirror above our buffet storage unit was an effortless decision – a true design no-brainer. We absolutely adore the one we selected from Overstock. Its sophisticated gold and black accents beautifully tie into other features throughout the room, creating a cohesive and polished look. With its perfect 30-inch diameter, it’s ideally proportioned for the space, offering both reflective light and a touch of modern elegance.

Inspiring Oak Frame Letterboard

I am a firm believer that every single office can benefit from the charm and utility of a letterboard. It’s a fantastic way to display motivational quotes, team announcements, or simply add a touch of playful personality. The one we acquired from Overstock is the ideal size at 16 x 20 inches and conveniently comes with a full set of letters and numbers, ready for any message we wish to share.

Chic Two-Toned Storage Basket Planter

Woven storage baskets are incredibly versatile and bring a wonderful textural element to any office space. They’re excellent for discreet storage or, as we’ve utilized one, as a stylish planter. The two-toned basket we chose is not only super affordable but its natural colors beautifully enhance the warm and inviting feel of the room, seamlessly blending functionality with our organic aesthetic.

Textural Hand-Woven Wall Tapestry

As a true macrame enthusiast, reserving a dedicated space for a striking macrame wall hanging was a natural choice for me. Instead of opting for a smaller piece, I wanted to create an illusion of greater space and a significant visual impact with one large, commanding artwork to the left of our lush plant wall. This is where this magnificent monotone wall tapestry enters the scene. I am absolutely captivated by it; its intricate design and neutral colors harmonize perfectly with the tranquil, bright theme of our workspace, adding depth and a touch of bohemian elegance.

Cozy Aztec Wool-Blend Pillows

To infuse a final layer of comfort and stylistic detail, we incorporated Aztec wool-blend pillows onto our chairs and table. Given that much of the room embraces a “white and bright” palette, these natural-colored pillows with their subtle Aztec pattern provide a welcome touch of warmth, texture, and a gentle global-inspired twist. They add a cozy, inviting feel without overwhelming the crispness of the overall design, making the workspace even more comfortable and appealing.

Future Wall Decor: A Glimpse of What’s Coming!

Our office transformation is an ongoing journey. Once the new windows are perfectly in place and our stylish barn door makes its grand entrance, we’ll be ready to complete the final touches of our wall decor. Stay tuned for these exciting additions! For now, here’s a little sneak peek at some adorable cactus paintings that are eagerly awaiting their moment on our walls, promising to add a delightful touch of desert charm.
