The highly anticipated 2nd Annual Fit For Her Minneapolis fundraising event is just around the corner, scheduled for Saturday, February 18th! We are thrilled to invite everyone in the Minneapolis community to join us for an inspiring day dedicated to fitness, community, and making a significant impact on women’s lives both locally and across the globe. Last year’s inaugural Fit For Her 2016 event was an incredible success, bringing together passionate individuals who sweated through a dynamic workout, savored healthy food, and explored unique offerings from local female-run businesses, all while raising vital funds for the Her Initiative. The energy and enthusiasm were so contagious that, even with a broken foot, I had an unforgettable time. This year, fueled by that success, we’re expanding our reach, capping the event at 100 participants instead of 50, doubling our potential for impact.
It’s an immense honor to co-host this year’s event alongside two remarkable women: Lindsey from Nourish Move Love, a dedicated Her Ambassador and a cherished colleague, and Stacie Hassig from The Real Food Dietitians. Their commitment to health, wellness, and community service perfectly aligns with the spirit of Fit For Her. Working hand-in-hand with Lindsey to champion such an incredible cause is truly humbling. Together, we’re committed to creating an event that not only inspires physical well-being but also fosters a powerful sense of collective purpose and support for women worldwide.

Understanding The Her Initiative: A Catalyst for Global Change
At the heart of our event is the profound mission of The Her Initiative. Founded by Healing Waters, this exceptional nonprofit organization is dedicated to providing access to clean, safe drinking water and comprehensive health and hygiene education to women in the developing world. The premise is simple yet revolutionary: empower women here in our community to uplift and support women facing daily challenges in other parts of the world. It’s a powerful movement built on solidarity, recognizing that when women thrive, entire communities flourish.
The challenges faced by women in many developing regions are often unseen by those of us in more privileged societies. However, these realities are stark and undeniably impactful:
- Water Scarcity: Globally, a staggering 1 in 9 people still lack access to safe and clean drinking water. This isn’t just an inconvenience; it’s a life-threatening crisis that disproportionately affects women and girls.
- Burden of Collection: Girls under the age of 15 are twice as likely as boys to be the primary family member responsible for fetching water. This critical chore steals precious hours from their education and childhood, perpetuating cycles of poverty and limiting their future potential.
- Women at the Forefront: In almost two-thirds (64%) of households where there’s no immediate water source, women bear the heavy responsibility of collecting water for their families. This responsibility often involves long, arduous journeys, exposing them to danger and physical strain.
- The Economic Power of Education: Research consistently demonstrates that for every 10% increase in women’s literacy, a country’s entire economy can grow by up to 0.3%. Access to clean water frees up time for girls to attend school, directly contributing to female literacy and broader economic development.
- Daily Toil: In 45 developing countries, women and girls are responsible for water collection in seven out of ten households. This daily grind is a constant barrier to their personal growth, economic independence, and overall well-being.
- Physical Demands: The average jerry can, a common container for water collection in Africa, weighs over 40 lbs when full. Imagine carrying this immense weight, often for miles, every single day – a testament to the incredible strength and resilience of these women, yet a burden that should not be theirs alone.
- Tangible Impact of Support: Your consistent contribution of just $25 a month for a year can provide 25 women and children with access to safe, clean water and vital health and hygiene education. This means that, over the course of a single year, one woman’s generosity here can genuinely transform the lives of 25 women and children there.
- Education Lost: Dirty water is a silent thief of opportunity, causing girls to miss an astounding 145 million days of school annually. With clean water, these girls can reclaim their education, build brighter futures, and break free from the cycle of disadvantage.
In America, clean water is often taken for granted – a basic human right accessible with a turn of the tap. These sobering facts compel us to reflect on our privileges and ignite a passion to create change. By joining us at the Fit For Her Minneapolis event, you become an active participant in this essential movement, helping to provide a fundamental necessity that empowers women to live healthier, more productive, and dignified lives.

The Legs + Shoulders Water Carry HIIT Workout: Fitness with a Purpose
Since a core component of the Fit For Her event is a powerful workout, and both Lindsey and I are passionate about getting our sweat on, we conceived a unique way to promote the event: through fitness itself! We’re proud to introduce “The Legs + Shoulders Water Carry,” a HIIT workout specifically designed to embody the physical challenges faced by women collecting water. This workout is directly inspired by the compelling facts about The Her Initiative that we shared earlier, serving as a powerful, empathetic reminder of the cause we support. Engaging in this workout isn’t just about personal fitness; it’s a symbolic act of solidarity, connecting your physical exertion to the daily realities of countless women.

Your 30-Minute Legs + Shoulders HIIT Workout: The Water Carry Challenge
This high-intensity interval training (HIIT) workout is designed to strengthen the muscle groups most utilized when carrying heavy loads, mirroring the incredible physical endurance demonstrated by women who transport water from distant wells to their homes. It’s a challenging yet rewarding routine that you can incorporate into your fitness regimen, serving as a constant reminder of the “Her Initiative” mission.
Equipment Needed: You’ll only need one medium-to-heavy dumbbell, ideally weighing between 8-20 lbs, depending on your fitness level. This single piece of equipment will be sufficient to simulate the burden of carrying water and build functional strength.
Instructions: This workout comprises 8 targeted exercises focusing on your legs and shoulders. Each movement is carefully selected to mimic the efforts required for water collection – from squatting to lift, to lunging for stability, and overhead pressing for carrying. Complete the specified number of repetitions or timed intervals for each exercise. For maximum benefit and a true challenge, aim to repeat the entire circuit 2 to 3 times. Remember to focus on proper form and controlled movements throughout.
The Workout Breakdown:
- Single Arm Overhead Squat: Perform 9 repetitions per side. This exercise builds core stability and shoulder strength, crucial for balancing a heavy load overhead.
- DB Overhead Reverse Lunge: Complete 15 repetitions per leg. This movement targets leg strength and balance, essential for navigating uneven terrain while carrying weight.
- Squat Jack + Punch: Engage in 64 seconds of this dynamic cardio. It boosts cardiovascular endurance and agility, reflecting the continuous movement and energy expended during long treks.
- Squat + Front Shoulder Raise: Execute 10 repetitions. This combines leg power with front shoulder strength, mimicking the initial lift and sustained carry of a water container.
- Lateral Lunge + Press: Perform 7 repetitions per leg. This strengthens lateral leg muscles and shoulder pressing power, crucial for stability and upward lifting.
- Criss Cross Squat Jack + Punch: Keep the energy high with 40 seconds of this cardio burst. Enhances coordination and stamina, vital for prolonged physical activity.
- DB Overhead Front Lunge: Complete 25 repetitions per leg. This challenging exercise focuses on single-leg strength and overhead stability, much like maintaining posture while transporting a heavy load.
- Press Jacks: Finish strong with 1 minute and 45 seconds of continuous cardio. This final push builds full-body endurance and cardiovascular fitness, reflecting the sustained effort of a long water carry.
Remember to repeat the entire circuit for 2-3 sets to maximize your strength and endurance benefits!
We eagerly anticipate welcoming you to the 2nd Annual Fit For Her Minneapolis event on February 18th.
