Hello fellow explorers and wellness enthusiasts! Linley here, absolutely thrilled to share the detailed story of my recent, truly unforgettable adventure to the breathtaking landscapes of **Nicaragua**. Even after nearly two weeks back home, the vibrant colors, the warm smiles, and the profound tranquility of this Central American gem continue to dance in my dreams. It’s challenging to encapsulate such a rich experience into a single narrative, as every moment felt like a discovery. So, I’ve meticulously curated my most cherished memories and valuable insights to guide you through this incredible journey, ensuring every detail is shared without unnecessary chatter.

For as long as I can remember, travel has been my first true love, a passion ignited by my parents’ globetrotting spirit and further fueled by a pivotal 7th-grade trip to Hong Kong with my amazing “guncles” (gay uncles). That experience cemented a lifelong commitment to exploring the world, and I’ve never once regretted seizing every opportunity to step onto a plane. There’s an unparalleled joy in discovering new cultures, immersing oneself in unfamiliar surroundings, abandoning rigid plans, and simply existing in the moment. I’m incredibly fortunate to have a career and colleagues who not only understand but actively champion the immense value of global exploration. The ability to disconnect, leave my laptop behind, and simply breathe deeply for a few weeks is a gift I deeply cherish. #teamfitfoodie, indeed!
Now, let’s dive into the heart of this particular adventure. My guncles own TaraNa Yoga, an exceptional yoga studio nestled in South Minneapolis – truly the best yoga experience in the city, and I wholeheartedly encourage you to visit! During one of their classes, they announced an upcoming **yoga retreat to Nicaragua**, and in that instant, I knew I had to go. I immediately reached out to two of my closest friends, and just like that, our plans were sealed. TaraNa (find them on Instagram!) has successfully hosted incredible yoga retreats in Italy for years, but this was the first time my budget and schedule perfectly aligned. I am eternally grateful that they did.

The main **Nicaragua yoga retreat** itself spanned seven days in **El Viejo Chinandega**, a serene coastal town renowned for its tranquil beaches. However, a small, adventurous segment of our group – comprising my guncles (who are seasoned global travelers), Randy (our co-yoga instructor for the trip), and my two besties and me – decided that if we were making the journey to Nicaragua, we absolutely had to maximize our exploration. Randy, thankfully, had prior experience in Nicaragua and emphatically declared that **Granada** was an absolute must-see. I must confess, aside from a minimal search for activities in Granada, I surrendered entirely to the group’s planning expertise. For someone who typically meticulously crafts every itinerary, it was a truly liberating and luxurious experience to simply show up and let the adventure unfold.
To provide a comprehensive overview, I’ll recount both phases of our trip, albeit in a slightly unconventional order. I’ll first share the blissful details of the **yoga retreat in El Viejo Chinandega**, followed by our vibrant exploration of **Granada**, offering you a complete picture of our unforgettable Nicaraguan escapade.
El Viejo Chinandega, Nicaragua: A Transformative Yoga Retreat
It’s not an exaggeration to say that I didn’t realize how much I needed a **yoga retreat** until I embarked on this journey. For those of you who have experienced the magic of a dedicated wellness escape, you’ll undoubtedly understand the profound impact. TaraNa Yoga thoughtfully hosted our retreat at the exceptional Coco Loco Eco-Resort in Nicaragua, a sanctuary where peace and self-discovery intertwine.

Coco Loco is more than just a resort; it’s a testament to vision and community. Founded by four best friends whose Central American travels inspired them to create a simple, sustainable haven, it now flourishes as an eco-resort that fosters connections among people from across the globe. What truly sets them apart is their unwavering commitment to giving back, making a significant positive impact on the local community. This dedication to both environmental stewardship and social responsibility resonated deeply with all of us.
The eco-resort itself is a thoughtfully designed mosaic of individual, sustainable bungalows, a spacious community gathering area, a vibrant dining room, a dedicated yoga studio, and an absolutely inviting patio complete with a refreshing pool. A short, leisurely stroll across the street leads directly to the pristine beach, where the rhythmic sounds of the ocean serve as a constant soundtrack. The owners take turns managing the resort, and during our stay, Ben was our exceptional ‘head of the house.’ Ben meticulously ensured our comfort and well-being, coordinating our daily schedule, curating delicious meals, and swiftly attending to any minor injuries or needs that arose – and yes, there were a few! His attentive care allowed us to fully immerse ourselves in the retreat experience.
Our days at Coco Loco were a perfect blend of peaceful relaxation and profound mindfulness. While I’ve always enjoyed yoga, this retreat elevated my practice and appreciation for it to an entirely new level. Once I successfully shed the residual stress from work, I found myself able to truly engage with each pose and breath on my mat. By the week’s end, I felt an incredible sense of physical and mental strength. The serene environment provided a safe space not only for physical rejuvenation but also for wrestling with and ultimately releasing emotional burdens that my heart needed to let go of. It was, in a word, transformative. My Uncle Jeff, alongside Randy, served as one of our inspiring yoga instructors. Both possess an extraordinary understanding of yoga, and their ability to guide us through postures with insightful anatomical knowledge and provide the most beneficial adjustments made an immense difference. We practiced yoga twice daily, with ample opportunities for additional activities in between.

A typical day at our **Nicaragua wellness retreat** unfolded with a gentle rhythm, fostering both energy and repose:
A Day in Paradise: Coco Loco Eco-Resort
- **Early Morning Nourishment:** Our day began with a comforting first breakfast of freshly brewed coffee and small, energizing bites, preparing us for the practice ahead.
- **Morning Vinyasa Flow:** A stimulating 2-3 hour Vinyasa class, expertly guided by our instructors, allowed us to connect deeply with our bodies and breath.
- **Hearty Second Breakfast:** A more substantial and delicious second breakfast replenished our energy after our invigorating practice.
- **Abundant Pool Time:** The midday hours were often spent basking in the sun by the sparkling pool, enjoying relaxed conversations or simply unwinding.
- **Wholesome Lunch:** A fresh, flavorful lunch provided the perfect mid-day fuel, often featuring local, seasonal ingredients.
- **Restorative Yoga Session:** A gentle restorative yoga class offered deep relaxation, promoting healing and inner calm.
- **Invigorating Beach Swim:** Late afternoons were dedicated to refreshing swims in the inviting ocean, a perfect way to cool down and connect with nature.
- **Evening Cocktails & Dinner:** The day concluded with lively conversations over cocktails, followed by a delicious and satisfying dinner, cementing the bonds formed throughout the day.
And speaking of food, let me assure you, the culinary offerings at Coco Loco Eco-Resort were absolutely divine and perfectly aligned with a health-conscious lifestyle. Every meal was consistently healthy, bursting with flavor, and undeniably delicious! We savored creative dishes like spiralized pad Thai, wholesome energy balls, decadent raw brownies, and vibrant Buddha bowls – just a few of my personal favorites. Freshly pressed juices were always available, providing a delightful burst of natural goodness, and for those moments when a cold beer hit the spot (which, yes, it often did for me!), local options were readily at hand.
Beyond our yoga practice, I made it a point to participate in as many of the offered activities as possible, eager to soak up every facet of this incredible **Nicaragua surf and yoga retreat**. My adventures included riding the waves while surfing, gracefully navigating the waters on a stand-up paddleboard (SUP), experiencing the unique thrill of watching the Super Bowl at a local bar, indulging in two wonderfully relaxing massages, embarking on a picturesque horseback riding excursion, discovering the art of chocolate making in an engaging class, and dedicating ample time to blissful reading by the serene poolside. Each experience added another layer to the richness of the trip.
Truly, every aspect of the **Nicaragua yoga retreat** felt like an absolute dream – perhaps with the minor exception of some fleeting stomach issues, a humorous side effect of accidentally using local water to brush my teeth! But without a doubt, the most cherished part of the entire journey was the **people**. Our group comprised 20 individuals, each connected in some way to TaraNa Yoga. We arrived as strangers, but by the end of the week, an undeniable sense of family had blossomed among us. I was genuinely amazed by the sheer number of interesting, loving, talented, and fun-spirited individuals who became part of our community. The early morning yoga sessions and the candid, laughter-filled poolside chats are moments I will forever hold dear. #peopleofthepool, indeed.

Granada, Nicaragua: A Vibrant Colonial City Exploration
As mentioned, before our tranquil **yoga retreat**, six of us embarked on a three-day exploration of **Granada, Nicaragua**. This vibrant colonial city is an absolute feast for the senses, brimming with life, captivating colors, and a distinct personality. Its historic cobblestone streets and architectural grandeur offer a fascinating blend of Central American charm intertwined with classic Spanish colonial influences. Every moment spent wandering its avenues was filled with wonder.
Where to Stay in Granada: Hotel con Corazon
If your travels lead you to Granada, a stay at Hotel con Corazon is an absolute imperative. Its name, “Hotel with a Heart,” perfectly encapsulates its essence. This isn’t just a place to sleep; it’s a mission-driven establishment dedicated to empowering developing countries by investing in education and sustainable work. Astonishingly, 100% of their profits are reinvested directly into Granada’s education system, with an ambitious vision to expand their impactful model to ten different countries within the next decade. How inspiring is that?
Hotel con Corazon charmed us completely with its boutique elegance. Granada is often affectionately described as a “courtyard city,” a term that beautifully captures its architectural spirit. From the street, you’ll encounter beautifully painted facades, but a peek through a doorway often reveals a hidden, magical courtyard within. Hotel con Corazon embodies this perfectly; what appears to be a simple hotel from the outside blossoms into an enchanting internal oasis, complete with vibrant flowers, inviting hammocks, and a delightful open-air dining area that hums with activity.

Without a doubt, the pool area was our favorite feature. Who needs an Olympic-sized pool when you have such a perfectly designed space? This pool and patio offered everything we could desire: comfortable lounge chairs for sunbathing (check!), abundant sunshine (check!), and attentive poolside service (double-check!). Our rooms were thoughtfully designed with simplicity and cleanliness in mind, and crucially, they included air conditioning – a welcome respite from the tropical heat. I truly appreciated the minimalist aesthetic and the incredibly lovely and helpful staff who made our stay even more enjoyable.
What to Do in Granada: An Action-Packed Itinerary

To maximize our time in Granada, we conveniently arranged all our excursions directly through Hotel con Corazon. Their staff are incredibly knowledgeable and ensured that every single outing was not only seamless but also immensely enjoyable. Given our limited three-day window, we aimed to experience a diverse array of Granada’s cultural and natural wonders:
- **Immersive City Walking Tour:** On our first day, we embarked on a captivating walking tour that brought Granada’s history to life. We explored magnificent colonial churches, witnessed the artisanal process at a local cigar factory, navigated the bustling and vibrant local market, and admired the expansive beauty of Lake Nicaragua.
- **Local Leather Craftsmanship:** We had the fascinating opportunity to visit a local leather factory, observing skilled artisans at work and appreciating the intricate craftsmanship behind their products.
- **Masaya Volcano Night Expedition:** A truly awe-inspiring experience was our drive to the summit of Masaya Volcano, one of the region’s few remaining active volcanoes. Witnessing the mesmerizing glow of red-hot lava flowing within the crater at night was an unforgettable spectacle, a powerful reminder of nature’s raw energy.
- **Challenging Mombacho Volcano Hike:** Day three brought a more strenuous adventure: hiking Mombacho Volcano. I wholeheartedly recommend this hike for those seeking a physical challenge! We completed the entire 5.5-mile trail, which, while scenic, was an old paved road with no switchbacks, making it incredibly steep. Our reward at the top was a hike around an ancient crater, enveloped in a lush rainforest teeming with wildlife. We spotted playful monkeys and even caught a glimpse of a sloth – it was absolutely worth every step, fostering a deep sense of camaraderie and achievement.
- **Rejuvenating Massages at PUR Yoga:** To soothe our weary muscles after our adventures, we all indulged in multiple massages at PUR Yoga. Their masseuses were exceptionally skilled and well-trained, providing deeply relaxing and therapeutic treatments that left us feeling completely refreshed.
Where to Eat in Granada: A Culinary Journey
Some of the finest meals we enjoyed were right within the comforting confines of Hotel con Corazon. Our rooms included breakfast every morning, offering us a choice between a traditional ‘Nica Breakfast’ – a classic Nicaraguan staple featuring gallo pinto (rice and beans), eggs, and either tortillas or crispy tostones – or a lighter option of fresh fruit and granola. Every morning was accompanied by delicious coffee and freshly squeezed juices. In the evenings, we often gathered to enjoy Hotel con Corazon’s happy hour specials, savoring a refreshing Toña (the popular local beer) and an array of tasty munchies, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploration.

Nicaraguan cuisine is a delightful fusion of diverse influences, and we made sure to venture out and explore the local recommendations:
- **Vigoron at the Local Market:** This quickly became my absolute favorite! Vigoron is a traditional dish consisting of a savory mixture of yucca, chicharron (fried pork belly), and cabbage, all elegantly wrapped in a banana leaf. Its unique combination of textures and flavors is a must-try.
- **The Pita Pita**:** Repeatedly recommended by locals, The Pita Pita is a fantastic Mediterranean fusion restaurant. Their fresh and delicious plates are designed for sharing, with generous portion sizes perfect for a group. The baba ganoush was an undeniable highlight for me.
- **The Garden Cafe**:** Also highly praised, The Garden Cafe is a sustainable cafe boasting a charming patio and a menu filled with healthy and incredibly delicious food options. It’s an ideal spot to relax with a good book and a refreshing iced coffee.
- **Miss Dell’s Kitchen**:** A newer addition to Granada’s culinary scene, we passed Miss Dell’s Kitchen multiple times a day and knew we had to try it. The ambiance was perfectly inviting, and the food proved to be very tasty and well-prepared.
- **La Hacienda Granada**:** This quirky establishment, with its wonderfully funny staff, was a memorable stop. While I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it for dinner, it’s an excellent choice for enjoying a lively cocktail in a unique setting.
This journey to **Nicaragua** truly was a trip of a lifetime, a perfect blend of serene wellness, vibrant cultural immersion, and exhilarating adventure. And you can absolutely bet that I’ll be eagerly planning my next TaraNa yoga retreat in the future!
