There are some weekends that simply stand out, etching themselves into your memory with vibrant experiences and cherished moments. My recent birthday celebration in Milwaukee was precisely one of those. It was an extraordinary long weekend, filled with the warmth of my favorite people, an abundance of delectable food and drinks, and the sheer bliss of beautiful weather. What more could one possibly desire for a perfect birthday retreat? Milwaukee, often lovingly referred to as MKE, boasts an incredibly dynamic and diverse restaurant scene, and with my significant other, “Man Candy,” having recently settled into the charming Historic Third Ward, all the city’s finest offerings were delightfully within walking distance. While I regret not saving more of my personal snapshots from this incredible journey (a true oversight on my part!), I’m eager to recount every detail of this unforgettable weekend, combining culinary exploration with a dedicated focus on fitness.
Thursday: Kicking Off the Celebration in MKE
My adventure began last Thursday with a five-hour road trip from Minneapolis to Milwaukee, shared with my wonderful friend, Lin. Our journey was a symphony of impromptu karaoke sessions, singing our hearts out for the entire duration – a testament to our enduring friendship and shared love for music. If you’ve ever followed our antics on social media (especially Snapchat at FitFoodieFinds), you’d perfectly understand the energy of our road trip. For those who haven’t, well, let’s just say we’re a duo that embraces fun wholeheartedly!
Upon arrival, we immediately dove into the local culture, meeting Man Candy at the renowned Milwaukee Brewing Company. Our mission was to procure a special release: “Gin Barrel Aged O-Gii,” a sought-after brew perfect for celebrating Milwaukee Day (April 14th, in homage to the city’s 414 area code). Despite an hour-long wait, the excitement was palpable, and our patience was rewarded as we secured seven bottles – a clear sign of our commitment to enjoying the local craft beer scene. The company’s vibrant atmosphere and the anticipation of a unique brew set a fantastic tone for the weekend.

After our brewery expedition, the quintessential question arose: what to eat? With Milwaukee’s seemingly endless array of culinary options, our decision might surprise some: we craved wings! And for truly exceptional wings in Milwaukee, there’s only one destination: Points East Pub in the Lower East Side. This local gem is celebrated for its perfectly crispy, flavor-packed wings. My personal preference? Blue cheese dressing over ranch, every single time – a hill I’m willing to die on! Beyond the indulgence, I made sure to balance things out by devouring all the celery that accompanied our delicious order. Gotta sneak in those veggies wherever you can, right?
Friday: Fitness, Flavor, and Third Ward Charm
Friday unfolded as a wonderfully relaxed day, a perfect blend of productive work, invigorating fitness, and delightful exploration. We started the morning with a massive, nutrient-packed scramble for breakfast, utilizing leftover groceries from recent recipe testing. This hearty meal fueled us for what was truly the core focus of this blog post: an intense Treadmill Ladder Circuit workout. After our sweat session, Lin and I ventured into the bustling Third Ward, finding a cozy spot at my absolute favorite Milwaukee coffee chain, Colectivo Coffee. With iced lattes (extra shot, please!) in hand, we settled in to catch up on work while Man Candy worked remotely from his new apartment. The vibrant energy of Colectivo, coupled with its excellent coffee, always makes it an ideal spot for inspiration and productivity.

For lunch, we reunited with Man Candy at The Milwaukee Public Market, an absolute must-visit for anyone experiencing MKE for the first time. This culinary haven is a vibrant tapestry of local vendors, offering everything from gourmet cheeses to fresh seafood and international cuisine. Lin and I decided to split two delicious sushi rolls and a savory chicken pad Thai from Thai-Namite – a truly satisfying and flavorful combination. Post-market, we made a pit stop to pick up an assortment of craft beers and ciders before heading to Man Candy’s brand-new apartment in the Third Ward. Since his official move was slated for the following day, the apartment was a charmingly blank canvas – the perfect setting for enjoying cold beers on a relaxed Friday evening, soaking in the anticipation of new beginnings.
As the afternoon progressed, we felt compelled to introduce Linley to one of Milwaukee’s most stunning natural features: Lake Michigan. A leisurely stroll led us down to the serene waterfront, where we were mesmerized by the vast expanse of the lake and the breathtaking architecture of the Milwaukee Art Museum. Its iconic wing-like brise soleil, which opens and closes, is a sight to behold, and it left us dreaming of the summer days when the lakefront truly comes alive. This scenic walk was a perfect way to appreciate the city’s unique blend of urban charm and natural beauty.

Friday night truly became the focal point of my birthday celebration, as Linley would be departing on Saturday morning. We embarked on what I fondly remember as the “BEST triple date EVER.” My love for small plates, allowing a taste of everything, led us to Ginger, a unique establishment that doubles as both a tapas restaurant and a vibrant drag queen bar. The food was absolutely delicious – we savored every bite of our numerous small plates and shared a bottle of exquisite wine, enjoying the lively atmosphere. Following dinner, our quest for more fun led us to Bugsy’s, Milwaukee’s most entertaining speakeasy. We met up with some of Man Candy’s friends and danced the night away to the incredible sounds of an acoustic 90s cover artist. It was a dream come true, especially when he played two of my all-time favorite songs: “Mr. Jones” and “Meet Virginia.” If you ever find yourself at Bugsy’s, I wholeheartedly recommend their Moscow Mule – it’s perfection in a glass.
Saturday: Moving Mountains and Feasting in the Third Ward
Saturday dawned with a singular, rather monumental task: moving day! We fortified ourselves for the challenges ahead with an early morning breakfast at Cafe Benelux, one of our absolute favorite breakfast spots in MKE. Their strong coffee was a welcome kick-start, and it served as a perfect farewell meal before Linley embarked on her journey back to the Twin Cities. My choice, the classic American breakfast with a much-craved side of bacon, was pure comfort. After that, it was “game on.” While moving is a task I love to hate, we dedicated a solid ten hours of our Saturday to transforming Man Candy’s new apartment into a home. I embraced my role as the “master unpacker,” meticulously organizing the kitchen – a task I find surprisingly satisfying amidst the chaos of boxes.
The true reward for our Herculean efforts came on Saturday night: dinner at Riverfront Pizzeria. The absolute best feature of Man Candy’s new Third Ward apartment is its unparalleled location, placing an incredible array of restaurants within easy walking distance. After ten hours of lifting, carrying, and unpacking, I genuinely felt capable of devouring an entire pizza myself! We reveled in every cheesy bite, paired with refreshing cocktails. And of course, no birthday weekend would be complete without dessert. Because who doesn’t deserve a sweet treat after conquering a move?
Sunday: Birthday Bliss and a Grill Master Debut
Sunday, my actual birthday, was a much-needed day of relaxation and celebration. We began the day with a mountain of fluffy pancakes and copious amounts of coffee at Zak’s Cafe. It was Milwaukee’s first truly beautiful day of the season, a glorious testament to spring’s arrival, so we seized the opportunity to enjoy our meal outside. I was surprised to see so few others taking advantage of the delightful weather! Post-breakfast, we embarked on a long, leisurely walk around MKE, soaking in the city’s sights and sounds until exhaustion finally prompted a well-deserved nap. Sometimes, the best way to celebrate is simply to recharge.
By 3 PM, hunger struck again, but this time we had a different plan. We decided to walk back to the Milwaukee Public Market, not for a sit-down meal, but to gather ingredients for a glorious grilled dinner. Yes! Can you imagine a more perfect birthday feast than bacon-wrapped chicken breast, perfectly roasted red potatoes, and tender asparagus? It was the ultimate celebratory dinner. I had never attempted bacon-wrapped chicken breast before, but I’m thrilled to report it was a resounding success – incredibly easy to prepare and absolutely delicious. We put our brand-new Fuego Element Grill to the test, and it performed flawlessly. It was surprisingly straightforward to assemble and remarkably easy to use. And dare I say, it’s also quite sleek and stylish?

And because every memorable dinner deserves a sweet conclusion, we opted for froyo! A trip to MyYoMy rounded out our birthday feast. We shared a generously sized cup, piled high with an indulgent array of toppings, marking a perfectly sweet end to a perfect birthday weekend.
The Treadmill Ladder Circuit: Your Ultimate 50-Minute Full-Body Burn
Whew! I know I’ve just given you a comprehensive play-by-play of my entire birthday weekend – a tale that blossomed from what was initially intended to be a quick mention of a fantastic workout. But since this fitness routine played an integral role in our active weekend, I’d be remiss not to share the details of the Treadmill Ladder Circuit that Lin and I conquered on Friday. This dynamic workout, inspired by routines at my home gym, PEC, and one that Man Candy and I have successfully completed before, is designed to deliver a powerful punch in under an hour.
At its core, this circuit is a brilliant fusion of high-intensity incline sprints and a comprehensive full-body strength segment. It’s a fantastic way to elevate your cardiovascular fitness while simultaneously building strength and endurance across all major muscle groups. The beauty of the “ladder” structure is its progressive challenge, keeping your body engaged and preventing plateaus. You’ll alternate between bursts of powerful cardio and targeted strength exercises, maximizing your calorie burn and overall fitness gains.
The accompanying image provides a clear visual guide to the circuit, but here’s a quick rundown and some essential tips:
- Incline Sprints: These aren’t just about speed; the incline significantly increases the challenge, engaging your glutes and hamstrings more intensely than flat-ground running. Start with a brisk walk to warm up, then gradually increase your incline and speed to a challenging sprint for the prescribed duration. Focus on maintaining good form: chest up, shoulders back, and a powerful leg drive.
- Full-Body Circuit: The strength portion targets your entire body. While the image suggests specific moves, this part of the workout is incredibly versatile. If you have access to weights (dumbbells, kettlebells), incorporate them. If you’re working with limited equipment or no equipment at all, bodyweight exercises are just as effective! Think squats, lunges, push-ups, planks, triceps dips, and core exercises. The key is to keep your heart rate up between exercises and move directly from one to the next with minimal rest.
- Structure: The “ladder” refers to how you might increase or decrease intervals or reps. For example, you might start with shorter sprints and fewer reps, then gradually increase them, or vice-versa, making it a challenging and engaging progression.
- Modifications:
- No Treadmill? No Problem! If you don’t have access to a treadmill, you can easily adapt the cardio component. Head outside for timed sprints or find a hill to tackle. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) on a stationary bike or elliptical can also be substituted.
- No Equipment? No Worries! Bodyweight exercises are incredibly effective for building strength. Focus on proper form and controlled movements.
- Listen to Your Body: Adjust the intensity, incline, and speed of your sprints based on your fitness level. Take appropriate rest between circuits as needed. The goal is to challenge yourself, not to cause injury.
This entire workout is designed to take approximately 50 minutes, though the exact duration will vary depending on your chosen rest periods between sprints and circuits. It’s a highly efficient way to get a complete workout when time is of the essence, leaving you feeling invigorated and accomplished.

A personal note: during this particular weekend, I opted to use the elliptical for my cardio intervals due to a broken foot. It’s a non-weight-bearing option that allowed me to safely maintain my fitness routine without aggravating my injury. This highlights the adaptability of the workout – always prioritize safety and modify as needed to suit your body’s current condition.
Wishing you all a fantastic and fit Friday, and perhaps some inspiration to explore your own city’s culinary delights and fitness opportunities!
