The Moment Has Arrived

Embracing Summer: A Journey of Renewal, Goals, and Self-Discovery

Today marks the beginning of a profound shift—a day where the lingering tendrils of stress finally recede, giving way to a refreshing sense of calm. It’s a day I wake with a clear mind, unburdened by the usual rush. This is my time to reinvest in myself, to cherish the incredible people who enrich my life, and to nourish my body with wholesome foods that fuel my spirit. It’s a day dedicated to invigorating exercise, hearty smiles, and genuine laughter. Today, summer officially begins, and I intend to embrace every moment with unparalleled enthusiasm.

Before diving into my personal summer agenda, I must pause to celebrate an incredible milestone. My amazing sister has just graduated from the University of Minnesota with a distinguished degree in Professional Strategic Communications, complemented by minors in history and political science! Her dedication and hard work have culminated in this remarkable achievement, filling our family with immense pride.

This momentous occasion offers a delightful glimpse into my own future graduation next May. Observing her success only fuels my motivation!

Our entire family converged in Minnesota this past weekend to partake in the celebrations, honoring her outstanding accomplishments. It was a joyous gathering, filled with shared memories and excited anticipation for what lies ahead.

And the journey continues! This August, she will embark on a new chapter, heading to Colorado to pursue a law degree from the prestigious University of Colorado, Boulder. Her ambition inspires me deeply; she’s not just living her dream, but in doing so, she’s giving me even more reason to pursue mine with unwavering determination.

Her incredible friends are also poised to make their mark, scattering to various corners of the country to pursue their own amazing endeavors, a testament to the talent and drive within her graduating class.

A cherished moment with my sister and her friend, a “Sister Boy” in spirit!

Reflecting on Personal Growth: My 2011 Goals Revisited

On this incredibly happy note, it’s the perfect time to revisit the personal goals I meticulously set for myself at the beginning of the year. This mid-year check-in allows me to assess my progress, celebrate small victories, and refocus my energy on areas that still require attention. Many of these aspirations have either been accomplished or are actively in progress, signifying a year of significant personal development.

1. Embrace Positivity: Wake Up Positive, Go to Bed Positive

This goal, inspired by Michelle from Give Me The Almond Butter, has profoundly influenced my daily outlook. She’s absolutely right: starting the day with a positive mindset truly sets the tone for everything that follows. It’s about consciously choosing to surround myself with uplifting influences—be it happy people, nourishing foods, or an environment that fosters peace and growth. While I’ve made great strides in cultivating this mindset, I acknowledge that it remains a continuous work in progress, a fundamental pillar of my personal well-being journey.

2. No Cheating on the 28-Day Challenge

This challenge was a commitment to discipline and healthier habits, and for 28 days, I focused on sticking to it without deviation. The experience reinforced the power of short-term, focused goals in building sustainable routines. Commencing on Monday, January 3rd, it served as a powerful kickstart to the year.

3. Find Time for Myself Every Day

In the whirlwind of academic and personal commitments, carving out daily “me time” is not a luxury, but a necessity. My ambition was to enhance my yoga practice, indulge in more calming hot teas, allow myself much-needed naps, and even grant myself the grace to skip a class if my well-being truly called for it. This commitment to self-care is vital for recharging and maintaining mental clarity.

4. Add at Least One Original CFF Recipe Per Week

This culinary goal focused on expanding my repertoire of healthy and delicious recipes. Each creation had to meet three criteria: cost-efficient, genuinely healthy, and undeniably tasty. It encouraged creativity in the kitchen while promoting mindful eating and budget-conscious living. This has been a delightful journey of experimentation and discovery.

5. Travel to a Place I’ve Never Been

The desire to explore new horizons and immerse myself in different cultures has always been strong. This goal was about breaking out of my comfort zone and experiencing the world beyond my immediate surroundings. Travel offers invaluable perspectives and enriching experiences that foster personal growth.

6. Minimize My Carbon Footprint and Do More DIY

Inspired by my friend Claire from Low Impact Fashionista, who crafts many of her own hygiene products and lives an eco-friendly life, this goal is about embracing sustainable living. My aim was to buy more in bulk, consistently reuse bags, prepare my own spreads and dips like hummus and nut butters, and reduce the frequency of laundry cycles. It’s a conscious effort to live more responsibly and reduce my environmental impact.

7. Volunteer and Give Back

Contributing to my local community holds immense importance for me. Volunteering isn’t just about helping those in need; it’s a reciprocal process that significantly aids personal growth and moral development. Making a tangible difference, however small, brings a profound sense of purpose and connection.

8. Declare a Major

The academic journey often involves significant decisions, and declaring my major was one such critical step. I vividly remember the excitement when my proposal was approved, solidifying my academic path and providing clear direction for my studies.

9. Find an Internship

Securing an internship is paramount for gaining real-world experience and bridging the gap between academic theory and practical application. This goal was about actively seeking opportunities to apply my knowledge and develop professional skills relevant to my chosen field.

10. Chew Less Gum and Drink Less Coffee

These two habits have long been my Achilles’ heel. Gum chewing, a nervous habit, had reached excessive levels (a number I’ll mercifully keep to myself!). While a cup or two of coffee in the morning is perfectly acceptable, my weakness lies in the frequent, often unnecessary, expenditures at popular coffee shops like Starbucks, Caribou, and Bruegger’s. Cutting back on these “extra” coffees could lead to significant financial savings. This particular goal, I must admit, has been an EPIC FAIL so far. It’s a tough habit to break, but the motivation to save “mucho dinero” persists!

Summer Focus: New Goals and Renewed Commitment

As the vibrant energy of summer descends, my focus sharpens on the goals that are still in progress and the new aspirations I wish to cultivate. This season offers a perfect canvas for growth and exploration.

1. Prioritize Daily Self-Care: Find Time for Myself

Reaffirming this crucial goal, I am committed to carving out dedicated moments each day for personal rejuvenation. Whether it’s through mindfulness, a quiet walk, or simply enjoying a hot cup of tea, these moments are essential for maintaining mental and emotional balance amidst life’s demands. It’s about creating a sustainable routine that supports my well-being.

2. Embrace Exploration: Travel to Places I’ve Never Been

This summer promises exciting adventures! I have several trips lined up that will take me to new destinations, fulfilling my desire to explore and expand my horizons. Each journey offers a chance to learn, adapt, and create unforgettable memories, enriching my life with diverse experiences and fresh perspectives.

3. Live Sustainably: Minimize My Carbon Footprint

Building on my previous efforts, this summer is dedicated to deepening my commitment to environmental consciousness. From making more informed choices about consumption to actively reducing waste, every small action contributes to a larger positive impact. This includes everything from bulk buying to conscious energy use.

4. Break Old Habits: Chew Less Gum and Drink Less Coffee

The “EPIC FAIL” of this goal earlier in the year has only strengthened my resolve. This summer, I am determined to tackle these habits head-on. By being more mindful of triggers and seeking healthier alternatives, I aim to significantly reduce my reliance on excessive gum chewing and those tempting, expensive coffee runs. It’s about cultivating greater self-control and making healthier choices for both my body and my wallet.

5. Drive My Car as Little as Possible

To further minimize my environmental impact and promote a healthier lifestyle, I am committed to significantly reducing my car usage. This means embracing walking, cycling, and public transport whenever feasible. It’s not just about reducing emissions, but also about enjoying the outdoors and integrating more physical activity into my daily routine.

6. Cultivate Connection: Socialize More

As many of you know, turning 21 back in April brought with it some significant anxiety surrounding alcohol. I’ve been hesitant to immerse myself in social scenarios, particularly bars, where drinking is prevalent, fearing awkwardness for myself or others. This summer, it’s time to confront and overcome this social anxiety. My goal is to confidently engage in social settings, embrace new experiences, and connect with people genuinely, all while maintaining my comfort and choosing to have fun sober. True connection doesn’t require alcohol; it requires presence and an open heart.

7. Stay Informed: Read the News

This might seem like an unusual goal, but lately, I’ve found myself increasingly absorbed in the dynamic “blog-o-sphere,” sometimes to the detriment of staying informed about global current events. My aim is to re-establish a healthy balance, ensuring I regularly consume news from reputable sources like CNN. Being aware of what’s happening in the world is crucial for an informed perspective and active citizenship.

8. Embrace Body Positivity: Be Less Self-Conscious in a Swimsuit

This is a deeply personal goal that many can relate to. For far too long, I’ve struggled with self-consciousness, particularly concerning my body image in a swimsuit. This summer, I am determined to embrace my body for what it is—strong, capable, and uniquely mine. My specific insecurity has always been my muscular thighs; I’ve always had them, and I always will! This journey is about transforming perceived flaws into sources of strength and confidence. It’s about accepting and loving my body unconditionally, recognizing that true beauty lies in self-acceptance and comfort in my own skin. Every individual carries their own insecurities, and mine will no longer hold me back from enjoying the warmth and freedom of summer.

9. Foster Openness: Meet New People and Avoid Judgment

My intention with this goal is to genuinely connect with others by looking beyond superficial stereotypes and preconceived notions. It’s about allowing new acquaintances to be their authentic selves, fostering an environment of acceptance and understanding. This summer, I aim to approach every new interaction with an open mind and a welcoming spirit, valuing the unique perspectives and experiences each person brings.

With these goals in mind, it’s time for a much-needed breakfast. Today, I’m absolutely craving:

Perfect Oatmeal – the ideal fuel for a day of renewal and goal-chasing!

Happy Monday, everyone!
