Hello, fellow adventurers! It’s Linley here, eager to share the incredible details of my recent Croatian escapade. If you follow my journey on @linleyshands, you’ll know that this trip was nothing short of spectacular. I’ve spent the past week reliving every moment, eager to put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard!) and convey the magic of this destination. You might be wondering, what led me to choose Croatia, a country that wasn’t initially on my travel radar?
For many years, my knowledge of Croatia was limited to its historical context, particularly references to the Bosnian War, which hardly painted a picture of a vibrant travel destination. However, fate intervened through my adventurous partner, Cole, and his equally intrepid family. Croatia had long been on their wish list, a testament to its growing allure. This year marked a special milestone for Cole’s mother, Mary, who celebrated her sixtieth birthday with an extraordinary request: to go kayaking in Croatia. And why not, indeed? Our grand adventure spanned 13 days, primarily focused on the stunning Croatian coast, but also included memorable detours into Montenegro and Switzerland, creating a truly diverse European experience.
Smart Trip Planning: Maximizing Your Croatian Adventure
Effective trip planning is the cornerstone of any memorable journey, and our Croatian adventure was no exception. Early in the year, Cole and I made a strategic decision to apply for the Chase Sapphire Reserve travel card. With a packed travel schedule anticipated for the summer and fall, we recognized the immense value such a card could offer. Our decision was based on several compelling perks that significantly enhanced our travel experience:
- Generous Bonus Miles: The initial sign-up bonus provided a substantial boost to our points balance, making future travel more accessible and affordable.
- Priority Pass Access: This invaluable perk granted us access to a network of exclusive airport lounges worldwide, transforming long layovers into comfortable, relaxing interludes with complimentary food and drinks.
- Global Entry + TSA Pre-check: The card covered the application fees for these programs, streamlining our airport security and customs procedures, saving us precious time and stress.
- 3x Points on Travel & Dining: Every dollar spent on travel and dining accumulated points three times faster, accelerating our ability to earn free flights and accommodations.
- Annual Travel Credit & Other Perks: Beyond these, the card offered numerous yearly benefits, including an annual travel credit that effectively offset a portion of the annual fee, making it an incredibly cost-effective choice for frequent travelers.
For our travel style and planned expeditions, the Chase Sapphire Reserve proved to be the optimal choice, offering unparalleled benefits. Not only did the airport lounges provide a much-needed sanctuary during transit, but the points we accumulated allowed us to purchase three additional flights for upcoming trips, a testament to the card’s excellent value. It truly transformed our travel logistics from a chore into a seamless and enjoyable part of the journey.
Finding affordable flights to Croatia required diligent research, especially since we only booked our tickets two months before departure. Direct round-trip flights from Minneapolis to Croatia were averaging well over $1,000. To circumvent these high costs, we devised a clever strategy: we booked round-trip tickets to Zurich for approximately $500 on American Airlines, knowing we would be ending our trip in Bern, Switzerland, with friends. From Zurich, we secured a connecting flight to Dubrovnik via Croatia Airlines for a mere $80. This multi-leg approach, though requiring a bit more planning, saved us a significant amount, proving that flexibility and a willingness to explore alternative routes can lead to excellent deals, even on short notice.
Unforgettable Experiences: Our Croatian & Balkan Itinerary
Our 13-day adventure unfolded at the cusp of Europe’s tourist season, spanning late May and early June, a perfect time to experience the region before the peak crowds arrived. Traveling as a group of ten required meticulous organization, which is why Mary, our incredible trip planner, entrusted the majority of our itinerary to Adriatic Kayaking Tours. This highly reputable company offers a range of pre-designed trips, or, as in our case, can meticulously tailor an adventure to suit your group’s specific interests and preferences.

We embarked on their Best of the Balkans week-long tour, an experience that surpassed all expectations. Our guides, Ivon and Ivor, were not just incredibly knowledgeable about the region’s history, culture, and ecology, but they were also exceptionally accommodating and genuinely wonderful people. We left the trip not only with incredible memories but also with new friendships forged on the open water and shared meals. I must admit, I had always held the common misconception that traveling independently was invariably cheaper than booking with a tour company. This trip completely shattered that notion. Adriatic Kayaking Tours provided an unparalleled level of service, comfort, and insight that would have been impossible to replicate on our own. Their expertise and thoughtful planning allowed us to fully immerse ourselves in the adventure without any logistical worries. I wholeheartedly recommend them for anyone seeking a deeply enriching and hassle-free travel experience in the region.
Coastal Charms: Exploring Croatia’s Adriatic Coastline and Islands
Our Croatian adventure began with five days dedicated to kayaking among the stunning islands off the country’s coast. Our entry point was Dubrovnik, a city of breathtaking beauty and historical significance. Upon arrival from Zurich, we spent a day soaking in its unique atmosphere, ticking off several must-do tourist activities:
- Walking the Ancient City Walls: Circling the impeccably preserved city walls offered panoramic views of the Old Town, the sparkling Adriatic, and the terracotta rooftops, a truly iconic experience.
- Savoring Gelato: Indulging in delicious gelato was a perfect way to cool down while wandering through the sun-drenched streets.
- Game of Thrones Filming Locations: For fans of the series, visiting the various locations where “King’s Landing” came to life was an absolute thrill, bringing the fictional world into reality.
- Feasting on Fresh Seafood: The coastal setting meant an abundance of incredibly fresh seafood, from grilled fish to succulent shellfish, a true culinary highlight.
- Discovering Croatian White Wine: Though typically not a white wine enthusiast, I was captivated by the exquisite taste of Croatian white wine – a delightful surprise and some of the best I’ve ever tasted.
While Dubrovnik is undeniably gorgeous, feeling like a movie set around every corner, its popularity as a cruise ship port means it can become incredibly crowded during the day. A day and a night in the city were sufficient for us to appreciate its charm without being overwhelmed by the throngs of tourists. We were more than ready to escape the hustle and bustle, taking a scenic 1.5-hour ferry ride to Lopud Island. This serene island became our peaceful home for the next five days. We stayed in an enchanting, modest hostel owned by an 85-year-old Croatian gentleman who proudly crafted his own wine. The simplicity and authenticity of this experience, coupled with the warmth of our host, felt like living a dream.

Croatia Highlights: A Kaleidoscope of Adriatic Wonders
Each day on Lopud Island brought a new kayaking adventure, leading us to different islands and charming coastal towns. The first five days of our Croatian journey were packed with indelible moments and experiences:
- Kayaking to Koločep Island: A delightful paddle to Koločep rewarded us with fantastic hiking trails and the most delectable seaside lunch imaginable, featuring freshly caught fish.
- Exploring Hidden Caves: We paddled through mystical sea caves, marveling at the interplay of light and water, a truly magical experience.
- Swimming in Pristine Waters: The Adriatic’s clarity and vibrant blue hues were unlike anything I had ever witnessed. Swimming in its impossibly clear, refreshing embrace was pure bliss.
- Daily Grilled Fish Feasts: Every single day, we savored succulent, perfectly grilled fish, a testament to Croatia’s rich culinary heritage and abundant seafood.
- Visiting the Trsteno Arboretum: We explored the world’s oldest arboretum in the city of Trsteno, a tranquil oasis of botanical beauty and historical significance.
- Discovering Secluded Beaches: Croatian beaches, often rocky and hidden, are utterly stunning. We found secluded coves that felt like private paradises, perfect for sunbathing and swimming away from the crowds.
Every aspect of our trip presented new and amazing discoveries. While I confess I’m not the strongest kayaker, and paddling sometimes presented a challenge, the active nature of the vacation was incredibly rewarding. I would choose an active adventure over a typical beach vacation any day, though the combination of both offered by Croatia is truly ideal. I did experience one challenging day battling a rather aggressive “Croatian flu” that left me confined for a good 12 hours – a humorous, albeit uncomfortable, anecdote in retrospect! But I persevered, thankfully!
I cannot overstate how truly exceptional our tour guides were. Their professionalism, humor, and genuine care for our well-being made every moment enjoyable. We shared laughter, learned invaluable insights about the region, and felt genuinely looked after. The meals we shared on Lopud, often featuring local specialties and lively conversation, were among my favorite memories. On day six, we caught an early ferry back to the mainland, commencing our journey towards Kotor, Montenegro, with a beautiful hike planned en route. After a few scenic detours, we seamlessly crossed the border into the majestic landscapes of Montenegro.

Montenegro: From Azure Coasts to Rugged Mountain Peaks
To my pleasant surprise, our journey included an unexpected detour to another country – Montenegro. Before this trip, I honestly knew very little about Montenegro, let alone that it would be part of our itinerary with Cole’s family. However, let me assure you, it quickly became evident that Montenegro is one of the most spectacularly gorgeous places I have ever had the privilege to visit.

Our transition from the sun-kissed beaches of Croatia to the dramatic, rugged mountains of Montenegro was breathtaking. We embarked on a three-hour drive, winding our way up and into the Montenegrin highlands. We arrived at Camp Grab, nestled along the Tara River, late at night, cloaked in darkness that obscured our surroundings. After a hearty Montenegrin meal, we settled into camp-style bunks, eager for the morning. Waking up unveiled a scene straight from a fairy tale: the Tara River, with its impossibly beautiful turquoise waters, forming a natural border between Montenegro and Bosnia. We were enveloped by untouched mountains and pristine terrain, a truly wild and magnificent landscape.
Camp Grab is not just a campsite; it’s an Ethno Lodge offering an array of guided outdoor adventures. From thrilling white-water rafting to serene hikes, it caters to every outdoor enthusiast. During our stay, we primarily indulged in the exhilaration of white-water rafting on the Tara River, known for its stunning canyon and rapids. We also enjoyed moments of pure relaxation on the riverbank and within the cozy lodge. Brief swims were attempted, but the Tara River, fed by glacial runoff, proved to be absolutely frigid – a bracing experience, to say the least! The stark contrast between the warm Adriatic coast and the cool mountain wilderness was invigorating, offering the best of both worlds within a single trip.
The culinary experience at Camp Grab was equally impressive, featuring authentic regional meals like homemade cheeses, tender veal, and exquisite pastries. It provided the perfect, rustic conclusion to our family adventure. After departing Montenegro, Cole and I continued our journey through Bosnia, making our way to Switzerland for the final leg of our trip (a detailed post on Switzerland will be coming soon!). The rest of Cole’s family opted to rent cars and explore more of the Croatian coast, indulging in climbing, additional hiking, and, of course, sampling plenty of homemade schnapps. Cole and I are already planning a return trip to Croatia, specifically to delve deeper into its climbing and hiking opportunities, a testament to the country’s diverse appeal.
5 Essential Tips for an Unforgettable Journey in Croatia
To help you plan your own incredible Croatian adventure, here are five invaluable tips to ensure you make the most of your travel experience:
- Embrace the Road Trip: Renting a car and driving along Croatia’s stunning coastal mountain roads is an absolute must. The infrastructure is excellent, navigation is straightforward, and the freedom to explore at your own pace will unveil countless hidden gems, from secluded beaches to charming villages, that might otherwise be missed. This allows for spontaneous stops and truly authentic discoveries.
- Opt for Local Accommodation: Forget the impersonal, often overpriced, tourist hotels. Instead, immerse yourself in local culture by researching and staying in a small Airbnb or a character-filled hostel in a charming town. These accommodations often offer a unique glimpse into Croatian life, providing warmth, local advice, and a more intimate connection to the destination. There’s an abundance of such options, each with its own story.
- Connect with the Locals: Croatians are renowned for their incredible hospitality, warmth, and accommodating nature. Don’t hesitate to strike up conversations – whether it’s with the owner of your Airbnb, a local restaurant proprietor, or a fellow traveler. Engaging with locals can lead to invaluable insider tips, recommendations for authentic experiences, and perhaps even unexpected adventures that aren’t found in any guidebooks.
- Prioritize Outdoor Exploration: Croatia is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Beyond its famous coastline, the country boasts majestic mountains, pristine national parks, and a wealth of opportunities for active pursuits. Dedicate time to hiking through verdant forests, scaling ancient cliffs, kayaking along serene waters, or even camping under the stars. The natural beauty here is truly diverse and begs to be explored actively.
- Discover Every Region’s Unique Charm: Croatia is not a monolithic destination; each region offers a distinct experience. The cuisine, local customs, and available activities vary significantly from one area to another. Spend time kayaking and island-hopping on the stunning Adriatic coast, then venture inland to explore national parks and historic towns for hiking and cultural immersion. And crucially, don’t miss the chance to sample as much local food and drink as possible, including their exceptional homemade schnapps and grappa – it’s a taste of Croatian soul!
