We’re absolutely obsessed with this elevated, protein-packed snack, and we know you will be too!

Puppy chow, often known as Muddy Buddies, holds a special place in the hearts of many. It was undeniably one of my absolute favorite treats growing up. The magical combination of melted peanut butter, rich chocolate, and a generous coating of powdered sugar was pure bliss. My fondest memory involves pouring all the freshly coated Chex mix into a big brown paper bag and shaking it with enthusiastic abandon until every single piece was thoroughly drenched in that incredible peanut butter-chocolate goodness and dusted with sugar. There’s also something uniquely satisfying about those irresistible clumps that form, creating giant, delicious bites of sugary perfection.
This recipe takes that cherished childhood experience and elevates it for today’s health-conscious palate. We maintain all the irresistible flavors and fun textures, but we ingeniously swap out the traditional powdered sugar for a high-quality protein powder. The result is a more nutritious, equally delicious version of the classic puppy chow that you can feel good about snacking on. It’s the perfect way to enjoy a sweet treat while fueling your body with essential protein.
The Secret to Protein Puppy Chow: Essential Ingredients
Crafting this incredible protein puppy chow requires surprisingly few ingredients, making it a super easy and accessible recipe for anyone to try. You only need five core components to transform simple pantry staples into a delicious, high-protein snack. Gather these essentials, and you’ll be well on your way to puppy chow perfection:
- **Chex Cereal:** The crunchy foundation of our puppy chow.
- **Chocolate Chips:** For that classic, decadent chocolate flavor.
- **Coconut Oil:** The unsung hero that helps achieve that smooth, glossy coating.
- **Peanut Butter:** The creamy, nutty heart of the recipe.
- **Protein Powder:** The star ingredient that adds a nutritional boost and a delightful flavor.
Once you have these five simple ingredients on hand, you’re all set to embark on your protein puppy chow adventure!
Choosing Your Protein Powder for Optimal Flavor
The type of protein powder you choose can significantly impact the final taste and texture of your protein puppy chow. We’ve experimented with various options to bring you the best recommendations. Our top pick for a perfectly balanced and delicious flavor is Garden of Life Vanilla protein powder. Its subtle sweetness and smooth vanilla notes blend beautifully with the chocolate and peanut butter, creating a harmonious and utterly satisfying treat.
Alternatively, if you’re looking to boost your collagen intake, you can seamlessly swap the protein powder for collagen powder at a 1:1 ratio. Collagen not only offers its own set of health benefits but can also contribute to a great texture. For collagen, we highly recommend Vital Proteins Vanilla Collagen Peptides for a flavored option, or their Unsweetened Collagen Peptides if you prefer to control the sweetness yourself. Remember, if you opt for an unflavored protein or collagen powder, you might want to add a few tablespoons of powdered sugar to achieve the desired level of sweetness, mirroring the traditional puppy chow taste.

Customizing Your Protein Puppy Chow: Substitutions and Variations
One of the best things about this protein puppy chow recipe is its versatility. While we provide a fantastic base, feel free to get creative and tailor it to your personal preferences and what you have available in your pantry. Here are some popular substitutions and exciting variations to inspire your next batch:
Cereal Choices for Your Chex Mix
The classic puppy chow often features Rice Chex cereal, and it works wonderfully here. However, don’t limit yourself! You can confidently use **Rice Chex, Wheat Chex, or Corn Chex** as the base for your puppy chow. Each variety offers a slightly different texture and subtle flavor profile, allowing you to experiment and find your favorite. For a gluten-free option, ensure you select Rice Chex or a certified gluten-free Corn Chex.
Exploring Chocolate Options
We typically recommend **semi-sweet chocolate chips** for this recipe because they provide a balanced sweetness that prevents the puppy chow from becoming overly rich. However, your chocolate choice can significantly alter the overall flavor. Feel free to use milk chocolate chips for a sweeter, creamier taste, dark chocolate chips for a more intense cocoa experience, or any other chocolate you have on hand. Just be aware that swapping the chocolate will introduce different notes to your Chex mix, but it will still be utterly delicious.
Nut Butter Alternatives
While peanut butter is the traditional choice and provides that beloved flavor, you can absolutely experiment with other **nut butters** in its place. Almond butter offers a milder, slightly sweeter profile, while cashew butter lends a creamier texture and a delicate flavor. For those with nut allergies, sunflower seed butter (like SunButter) is an excellent, safe alternative that still delivers a rich, satisfying taste. Each substitution will subtly change the flavor of your Chex mix, but rest assured, the outcome will remain incredibly tasty.
Add-Ins for a Gourmet Touch
Transform your protein puppy chow into a more complex, ‘Chex Mix’ style snack by incorporating other delicious add-ins. This is where you can truly unleash your creativity! Some fantastic options include:
- **Mini chocolate chips:** For an extra burst of chocolate in every bite.
- **Pretzels:** To introduce a delightful salty crunch that perfectly complements the sweet and savory.
- **Mini M&Ms:** For a colorful pop and a satisfying candy coating.
- **Peanuts or other nuts:** To enhance the nutty flavor and add more protein and healthy fats.
- **Dried fruit:** Such as raisins, dried cranberries, or chopped apricots for a chewy, fruity counterpoint.
- **Shredded coconut:** For a tropical twist and added texture.
- **Sprinkles:** For a festive look, especially for holidays or celebrations.

Top Tips for Protein Puppy Chow Perfection
Achieving the perfect batch of protein puppy chow is easy with a few simple tricks. These expert tips will help ensure your Chex cereal is beautifully coated and your snack is as delicious as possible, every single time.
- **Embrace the Power of a Large Paper Bag:** This might sound old-fashioned, but it’s truly the secret weapon for evenly coating your puppy chow with protein powder. Once your Chex are coated in the melted peanut butter and chocolate mixture, transfer them into a large, sturdy paper bag. Add your protein powder to the bag, roll down the top securely to seal it, and then shake like crazy! The tumbling motion within the bag ensures that every single piece of Chex gets a uniform, generous coating of protein powder, preventing clumping and ensuring maximum flavor and protein distribution.
- **Adjusting Protein Powder Amount:** Protein powders can vary significantly in their absorbency and texture. Depending on the brand and type of protein powder you use, as well as the consistency of your peanut butter, you might need to adjust the amount of protein powder slightly. If your mixture still looks too wet after shaking, gradually add a little more protein powder (a tablespoon at a time) and continue shaking until you achieve a dry, well-coated finish. Conversely, if your mixture seems too dry and isn’t coating well, a tiny bit more melted peanut butter or coconut oil can help. Trust your judgment and adjust as needed to reach that ideal puppy chow consistency.
- **Allow for Proper Setting:** While it’s tempting to dive right in, giving your protein puppy chow some time to set is crucial. This allows the coating to firm up, resulting in a less messy and more satisfying snack. You can let it set at room temperature or speed up the process by placing it in the refrigerator for about 15-30 minutes.
- **Quality Ingredients Matter:** Using high-quality chocolate chips and a natural, drippy peanut butter will make a noticeable difference in the flavor of your puppy chow. Natural peanut butter (the kind you have to stir!) works best because its looser consistency blends more smoothly with the chocolate and coconut oil.

Storage and Freezer Directions for Your Protein Puppy Chow
Once your delectable protein puppy chow has been perfectly coated with protein powder and allowed to set, proper storage is key to maintaining its freshness and delicious texture. Follow these simple guidelines to keep your snack at its best:
Storage at Room Temperature
After the puppy chow has fully set and cooled, transfer it to an airtight container. Store this container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. When stored correctly, your protein puppy chow will remain fresh and enjoyable for up to **5-7 days**. The airtight container is essential to prevent the cereal from becoming stale and to protect the coating from becoming sticky.
Freezer Instructions for Long-Term Enjoyment
For those who love to meal prep or simply want to have a healthy, protein-packed treat on hand for an extended period, protein puppy chow freezes beautifully! Here’s how to do it:
- **Ensure it’s Fully Set:** Before freezing, make sure your puppy chow has completely cooled and the coating has fully set. This prevents pieces from sticking together excessively in the freezer.
- **Transfer to a Freezer-Safe Container:** Place the cooled puppy chow into a freezer-safe, airtight container or a heavy-duty freezer bag. If using a bag, try to remove as much air as possible before sealing.
- **Freeze:** Store in the freezer for up to **3 months**.
- **Thawing and Enjoying:** When you’re ready for a snack, simply remove the desired portion from the freezer. You can enjoy it directly from frozen for a crunchy, cool treat, or allow it to thaw at room temperature for a few minutes until it reaches your preferred texture. Freezing can sometimes make the texture a bit firmer, but the flavor remains fantastic.
Having a stash of frozen protein puppy chow is perfect for quick, portion-controlled snacks or a post-workout boost anytime you need it!

Protein Puppy Chow Recipe
This protein puppy chow is made with protein powder, peanut butter, chocolate, and Chex cereal! It is a sweet treat with the addition of a little extra protein.
By: Linley Hanson
Prep Time: 15 mins
Cook Time: 2 mins
Total Time: 17 mins
Servings: 10
Ingredients
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1 cup all-natural drippy peanut butter
- 2 teaspoons coconut oil
- 6-7 cups Rice Chex cereal
- 1 cup vanilla protein powder, or Vanilla Collagen Peptides or Unflavored Collagen Peptides (we love Vital Farms!)
Instructions
- Add chocolate chips, peanut butter, and coconut oil to a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave the mixture in 20-second increments, stirring after each increment, until the mixture is melted and glossy. This will take around 2 minutes.
-
Add 3 cups of the Chex to the bottom of a large bowl. Pour half of the melted peanut butter and chocolate over the Chex. Fold the ingredients together until coated.

-
Add the rest of the Chex and cover with the remaining melted peanut butter and chocolate. Fold until the second layer is coated. It’s okay if there are chunks of Chex stuck together.

-
To coat the Chex with protein powder, leave the mixture in the bowl or transfer it to a large paper bag. Add ½ cup of the protein powder to the mixture and if it’s in a bowl, gently stir until coated with protein powder. Add the second half cup of protein powder and toss again. If using a paper bag, pour all the protein powder into the bag. Roll the top over and shake the bag until the Chex are completely coated.

-
Let the puppy chow cool before storing it in an airtight container in a cool and dry place.

Tips & Notes
- The flavor of this puppy chow will change based on what protein powder is used. We tested this recipe with Garden of Life Vanilla, Vital Protein Vanilla Collagen and Vital Proteins Unflavored Collagen.
- If you use plain collagen or protein powder, you’ll need to add a few tablespoons of powdered sugar to taste!
- You could also use chocolate protein powder in this recipe for a double chocolate treat.
- You can swap the Rice Chex out for Corn Chex or Wheat Chex, too, for varied texture and flavor.
Make Them into Protein Balls
To transform this protein puppy chow into delightful protein puppy chow balls, use the same measurements as the regular protein puppy chow recipe above, plus 2 tablespoons of powdered sugar for the coating. Follow the method below:
- Add chocolate chips, peanut butter, and coconut oil to a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave the mixture in 20-second increments, stirring after each increment, until the mixture is melted and glossy. This will take around 2 minutes.
- Add the Chex to the bottom of a bowl and gently crush the Chex into small pieces (optionally, add them to a food processor and pulse until crumbs).
- Pour the melted peanut butter and chocolate over the Chex crumbs. Fold the ingredients together until coated.
- Add the protein powder to a separate bowl and add 2 tablespoons of powdered sugar. Mix thoroughly and set aside.
- Wet your hands slightly to prevent sticking. Use a 1.5 tablespoon scoop to portion the Chex mixture and form it into a ball. Squeeze the ball firmly to ensure it holds together and isn’t crumbly. Repeat until all the Chex mixture has been shaped into balls.
- Roll each ball generously in the protein powder and powdered sugar mixture until it’s evenly coated on all sides. Repeat for all the balls.
- Enjoy immediately for a fresh treat, or store the balls in the freezer for an easy, grab-and-go snack anytime.
Tips for Protein Balls:
- If the balls aren’t sticking together well, add a little more melted peanut butter or a teaspoon or so of water to the mixture until it becomes more cohesive.
