After far too long, Team Fit Foodie is thrilled to whisk you away on an incredible journey just south of the Twin Cities, combining breathtaking natural beauty with culinary delights: a serene canoeing trip on the Cannon River, followed by an evening of craft beer and farm-to-table pizza at the iconic Red Barn Pizza Farm.

This particular adventure held an extra layer of excitement. Instead of a traditional gift for Linley’s birthday back in May, Emily and I conspired to give her something truly memorable: an experience! We meticulously planned a surprise day, blocking our calendars for July 16th and crafting an itinerary designed for maximum fun, relaxation, and delicious discovery. It was a day dedicated to friendship, exploration, and creating lasting memories.

While Linley’s birthday provided the perfect excuse to officially block out our schedules, this is exactly the kind of adventure we love to share with our closest friends. There’s something truly special about disconnecting from the everyday and reconnecting with those who matter most through shared experiences. This Minnesota day trip promised a blend of active enjoyment and relaxed camaraderie, proving once again that the best gifts are not things, but moments.

Our Sunday adventure kicked off bright and early as we made the scenic hour-long drive south to Cannon Falls, Minnesota. Our first destination, Nick’s Downtown Diner, proved to be an absolute gem and a must-visit for anyone planning a Cannon River day trip. This charming diner exudes a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, making it the ideal spot to gather before a day of outdoor activity. The food? Simply divine!

I highly recommend their spicy meatloaf Benedict – it was an unexpected and incredibly delicious twist on a classic, truly a highlight of the meal. Beyond the fantastic food, Nick’s Downtown Diner offers unbeatable convenience, located just two minutes from the Cannon River access point. We savored our breakfast, lingered over coffee, and enjoyed some refreshing Bloody Marys, ensuring we were well-fed and energized for our 11 AM canoe launch. Cannon Falls itself is a quaint town, worth a stroll if you have extra time, but for us, the river beckoned!

Paddling Paradise: Canoeing the Cannon River

The moment Linley realized our second stop involved canoeing, her excitement was palpable – pure joy captured perfectly in the photo above! Having canoed the Cannon River numerous times, I knew it was the ideal choice for a relaxing yet engaging day trip. While Mark and I had recently purchased our own canoe, we opted for the incredible convenience offered by Cannon River Canoe and Bike Rental. Their setup is truly seamless, designed to maximize your enjoyment without any logistical headaches.

For just $40, you rent a canoe and embark directly from their outfitter. Eight scenic miles downstream, at the designated pull-out point in Welch, they’re ready to pick you up – canoe and all! This brilliant system means you can leave your vehicle securely parked at the rental office and never worry about paddling back against the surprisingly strong current, which would indeed be an impossible feat. It transforms the experience into pure leisure, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the river.

The Scenic Beauty of the Cannon River

This particular trip felt extra special as the river was bustling with fellow adventurers. It was heartwarming to share the tranquil waters with an array of kayakers, fishermen, casual floaters, and other canoers. The Cannon River, known for its gentle but consistent current, truly allows you to choose your pace. You can leisurely float the entire distance, letting the river guide you, or paddle actively for a more invigorating workout. Along the way, you’ll encounter a few sections affectionately known as “rapids.” These aren’t white-water monsters, but rather fun, splashy stretches that add a delightful thrill to the journey, guaranteed to bring smiles and laughter.

We chose the popular 8-mile trip to Welch, a perfect duration for a half-day outing, typically taking just under three hours. For the more adventurous, a 16-mile option is also available, which I’m eager to explore on a future visit! Throughout our journey, we soaked in the serene Minnesota landscape, serenaded by our own impromptu sing-alongs, indulged in Linley’s favorite candies – Mike n’ Ikes and Sour Patch Kids – and sipped on canned rosé. Our approach was definitely more “floating” than “paddling,” embracing the relaxed flow of the river. It was, in a word, perfection.

Northfield’s Delights: Tanzenwald Brewery & Red Barn Pizza Farm

After our refreshing canoeing excursion, we packed up our gear and made the short, scenic drive to Northfield, Minnesota, a charming town brimming with character and our next two exciting stops. Northfield, known for its historic downtown and vibrant community, proved to be the perfect backdrop for the second half of our surprise day.

Craft Beer Haven: Tanzenwald Brewery

Our interim stop, Tanzenwald Brewery, was a revelation. From the moment we stepped inside, we knew we had found a special place. Emily and Bryce (Linley’s brother), our resident beer connoisseurs, had chosen this spot, and their expertise truly shone through. They’ve explored more breweries than anyone I know, so their endorsement speaks volumes. What immediately impressed me was Tanzenwald’s extensive menu – a pleasant surprise, as many Twin Cities breweries focus solely on beer. Here, the food menu was exceptional, complementing their vast selection of beers on tap.

To maximize our tasting experience, Mark, Linley, and I decided to share a 10-beer flight, allowing us to sample every unique brew Tanzenwald offered. It was a fantastic way to explore their diverse range of flavors and styles. My personal favorite was the “Funky Sour,” a testament to my growing appreciation for sour beers. Tanzenwald’s commitment to quality and variety truly makes it a standout destination for craft beer enthusiasts and a cornerstone of Northfield’s burgeoning craft scene.

A Dream Come True: Red Barn Pizza Farm

Just an 11-minute drive from the brewery, our final stop, The Red Barn Pizza Farm of Northfield, MN, was nothing short of a dream. This place embodies the true spirit of farm-to-table dining and offers a unique communal experience. Imagine this: handmade dough, and the majority of the fresh, vibrant toppings sourced directly from their incredible gardens right on the property! It’s an authentic taste of Minnesota agriculture and culinary creativity.

Like many of Minnesota’s beloved pizza farms, the Red Barn operates on a “BYOEverything but the pizza” model. This ingenious concept encourages guests to bring their own drinks (beer, wine, sodas), appetizers, blankets, chairs, and even portable tables, transforming the farm into a lively, impromptu picnic. It fosters a wonderfully relaxed and communal atmosphere, where families and friends gather to enjoy good food and company under the open sky.

The pizza flavors at Red Barn Pizza Farm evolve with the seasons, ensuring that every visit offers something new and exciting. Everything is crafted on-site, and the pizzas are baked to perfection in a massive, roaring wood-fired oven. Oh, the joy when the crust gets that perfect, slightly charred crispness! Each pizza is a flat $25, and every single penny is well worth it for the quality, freshness, and unforgettable experience. To complete our feast, we brought a growler of our favorite brew from Tanzenwald and, to celebrate Linley’s birthday, a mini camp stove with all the fixings for s’mores – her absolute favorite dessert. It was the perfect, sweet ending to an already phenomenal day.
