Essential Ingredients for Your Perfect Cold Brew Protein Drink

Crafting this delightful and nutritious beverage is straightforward with just a few key components. Here’s a closer look at what you’ll need and why each ingredient plays a crucial role:

  • Cold Brew Coffee: We often opt for cold brew concentrate for its intense, smooth coffee flavor that truly elevates this drink. Cold brew is inherently less acidic than regular hot coffee, resulting in a naturally sweeter and smoother taste profile. If concentrate isn’t readily available, fear not! Any high-quality ready-to-drink cold brew will work wonderfully. Alternatively, simply chill some strong brewed coffee overnight, or even use a shot of espresso for a bolder kick. Feel free to make your own cold brew at home for a cost-effective and fresh option.
  • Almond Milk: Unsweetened almond milk forms the creamy, dairy-free base of our coffee protein drink. It offers a neutral flavor that allows the coffee and protein notes to shine, while adding a lovely texture without extra sugar. However, the beauty of this recipe is its flexibility. If you prefer a touch of sweetness, a sweetened almond milk can be used. For those who aren’t concerned about dairy or have different dietary preferences, feel free to swap it out for soy milk, oat milk, coconut milk, or even traditional dairy milk – each will impart its own unique creaminess and subtle flavor.
  • Protein Powder: The star of the show for muscle support! We personally love and often use Aloha Vanilla, a fantastic plant-based protein powder that blends beautifully and offers a clean ingredient profile. However, this recipe is incredibly forgiving when it comes to protein types. Whether you prefer a whey-based protein for rapid absorption or another plant-based alternative like pea, rice, or hemp protein, it will work perfectly. You can also incorporate unflavored protein powder or even collagen peptides for a different kind of protein boost, focusing on skin, hair, and joint health. Experiment with different flavors like chocolate or unflavored to truly make it your own!

Personalize Your Protein Coffee: Endless Customization Ideas

The beauty of this cold brew protein drink recipe lies in its incredible versatility. It’s a fantastic base that you can easily adapt to your taste preferences, dietary needs, or simply whatever you have on hand. Here are some ideas to make this protein-packed beverage uniquely yours:

  • Sweetener Options: If you desire a sweeter profile, you have many natural options. Try stirring in a bit of our homemade honey simple syrup for a floral sweetness, or a classic simple syrup for a neutral sweet boost. Maple syrup, agave nectar, or a few drops of stevia or monk fruit extract are also excellent choices for calorie-conscious sweetness. For a deeper, richer flavor, a Medjool date blended in can add natural sweetness and fiber.
  • Milk Alternatives: While almond milk provides a light and creamy base, don’t hesitate to experiment with other milks. For a richer texture, oat milk is a fantastic choice, known for its barista-friendly creaminess. Coconut milk (from a carton, not canned) adds a subtle tropical note, while soy milk offers a higher protein content. And of course, if you prefer dairy, whole milk or skim milk work perfectly well and contribute to the creaminess.
  • Protein Powder Flavors: We often use vanilla protein powder for its versatile flavor that complements coffee beautifully. However, the possibilities are endless! Chocolate protein powder transforms this into a mocha-inspired delight, while an unflavored protein powder allows the coffee flavor to truly dominate. You can also experiment with unique flavors like peanut butter, salted caramel, or even cookies and cream for a more indulgent experience.
  • Transform it into a Smoothie: Craving something thicker and even more satisfying? Turn your cold brew protein drink into a smoothie! Simply blend all the ingredients with a handful of ice cubes for a frosty texture. For added creaminess and a nutritional boost, throw in a frozen banana – it adds natural sweetness and a velvety consistency. Check out our guide on how to freeze bananas for best results.
  • Extra Flavor Boosts: Elevate your drink with simple additions. A dash of cinnamon, nutmeg, or a pinch of cardamom can add warmth and complexity. A few drops of vanilla extract, almond extract, or even peppermint extract can introduce exciting new flavors. For a healthy fat boost, consider adding a teaspoon of MCT oil or a spoonful of almond butter (though this will change the consistency).

Do I have to use cold brew concentrate?

Absolutely not! While cold brew concentrate delivers an incredibly smooth and potent coffee flavor, it’s by no means a strict requirement for this recipe. We understand that convenience and availability vary, so feel free to use your preferred coffee base.

You can easily substitute cold brew concentrate with:

  • Regular Cold Brew: If you have ready-to-drink cold brew, simply use that. It might be less intense than concentrate, so you might adjust the amount to your taste.
  • Chilled Strong Coffee: Brew a batch of your favorite coffee, let it cool completely, and then chill it in the refrigerator. This is a perfect way to use up leftover coffee.
  • Espresso Shots: For a bolder, more intense coffee flavor, a shot or two of chilled espresso works wonderfully. It provides a strong coffee presence without adding much liquid volume.
  • Homemade Cold Brew: Feeling adventurous? You can easily make your own cold brew at home with just coffee grounds and water. It’s a simple overnight process that yields a smooth, low-acid coffee base for this drink (and many others!).

The key is to use cold coffee to ensure your protein powder mixes smoothly and you get a refreshing, chilled beverage. So, choose the option that best suits your taste and convenience!

Ingredients

  • 2 oz. cold brew concentrate, or strong chilled coffee or espresso

  • 6 oz. unsweetened, plain almond milk (or your preferred milk)

  • 2 tablespoons protein powder, we used Aloha Vanilla (choose your favorite flavor and type)

  • handful of ice (optional, for extra chill and thickness)

Instructions

  • Combine all your ingredients (cold brew, milk, protein powder, and ice if using) into a protein shaker bottle, a large mason jar with a lid, or a blender.
  • Shake vigorously for approximately 60 seconds, or until the protein powder is fully dissolved and the mixture is smooth and well combined. If using a blender, blend until smooth. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Tips & Notes

  • For the smoothest and easiest preparation, we’ve found that using a high-quality protein shaker bottle, like this one, works exceptionally well. It ensures a lump-free drink every time.
  • Don’t limit yourself to just protein powder! You can seamlessly swap the protein powder for unflavored or flavored collagen peptides if you prefer, offering different benefits for skin, hair, and joints.
  • Feel free to experiment with any type or flavor of protein powder you wish. This recipe is incredibly adaptable, so don’t hesitate to use your favorite chocolate, peanut butter, or even unflavored protein.
  • To make it sweeter naturally, consider adding a Medjool date (pitted) to the mixture and blending it well.
