For a long time, I’ve wanted to share my perspective on a topic that resonates deeply with many in the wellness world. And I believe there’s no better moment than now to open up. You might be thinking, given the title, that I’m about to completely dismiss the Whole30 program. That’s not entirely the case. I acknowledge its benefits for many individuals. However, I feel it’s crucial to explain why, for me personally, it just isn’t the right fit on my journey to sustainable health.

My Personal Journey: From Food Obsession to Seeking Food Freedom
As many of you know, my past included a challenging and unhealthy obsession with food and exercise. It consumed my thoughts day and night. Every waking moment revolved around what I was going to eat, what I absolutely couldn’t eat, and how I was going to “burn off” every calorie. This detrimental relationship was often fueled by the relentless cycle of health and fitness trends and fleeting fads. I was precisely one of those people desperately searching for a quick weight loss fix, willing to try almost anything promoted in the media that promised to reduce bloating, shed pounds, and build muscle.
I distinctly remember cutting out dairy for a period, convinced it was the key to unlocking my ideal body. I then persuaded myself that a gluten-free lifestyle was essential for my well-being, even without a diagnosed intolerance. I even attempted to go paleo. The list of restrictive diets and elimination protocols I tried seemed endless. And you know what? None of these approaches genuinely helped heal my fractured relationship with food and exercise. In fact, they often made it considerably worse. Why? Because they all hinged on one fundamental, damaging principle:
I fixated on what I *couldn’t* have, instead of embracing what I *could* have.
Does that sentiment resonate with you? If so, you’re not alone. This very mindset is, unfortunately, often amplified by popular programs like Whole30, or indeed, any form of “detox” that emphasizes severe restriction.
The Pitfalls of Restriction: Why “Detoxes” and Whole30 Don’t Align with My Philosophy
Whenever I observe others embarking on a Whole30 journey, a common theme emerges. Much of the conversation revolves around what they plan to eat once the “detox” is over, or proudly showcasing a beautifully prepared meal, emphasizing all the forbidden ingredients it *doesn’t* contain. I completely understand that many individuals achieve impressive short-term results and feel a renewed sense of health with Whole30. It can be an excellent way for some to reset their palate, identify food sensitivities, and develop new cooking habits. However, what often concerns me is its inherent nature as a program you “start and stop,” rather than a truly sustainable eating pattern you can seamlessly integrate into your life indefinitely.
While Whole30 undoubtedly aims to teach healthier habits, the extensive list of restrictions involved is precisely what I know would trigger my old patterns. It would undoubtedly plunge me back into that challenging phase of my life where my thoughts were consumed by deprivation and the constant mental battle against what I couldn’t have. For someone with a history like mine, this focus on elimination can quickly become a slippery slope, fostering an unhealthy obsession rather than promoting genuine food freedom and peace.
Moreover, the very concept of a “detox” often oversimplifies the incredible capabilities of our bodies. Our liver and kidneys are highly efficient, continuously working to cleanse and purify our systems. Relying on short-term, restrictive diets for “detoxification” can sometimes create an unnecessary sense of urgency or guilt around certain foods, rather than fostering a balanced, long-term approach to nutrition that supports these natural processes every day.
Embracing Sustainable Nourishment: Introducing the HGG Reset
It was from this shared experience of struggle and eventual liberation that Monique and I founded Healthy Glow Co. We both intimately understand what it feels like to stand in front of a mirror and feel discontent with our reflections, often due to the relentless pursuit of an unattainable ideal fueled by diet culture. This personal history is precisely why we poured our hearts into creating the HGG Reset. I am immensely proud to stand behind this program, confident in its principles because we live by them 100%.
The HGG Reset embodies exactly how we eat when we want to feel our absolute best, both physically and mentally. It’s a thoughtfully designed four-week program focused on nourishing your body with foods that truly work in your favor, while gently stripping back those elements that might be weighing you down, both literally and figuratively. Crucially, you won’t find any rigid “yes/no” lists here. Instead, we have intentionally crafted this program to empower you, helping you establish a new, sustainable eating pattern built on healthy, satisfying food that not only tastes incredible but also makes you feel incredible from the inside out.
What Makes HGG Reset Different? A Focus on Abundance, Not Restriction
To be entirely transparent, the HGG Reset shares many foundational principles with Whole30 and other health-conscious eating approaches. It strongly promotes:
- Abundant Greens: We encourage a wealth of leafy greens and other vibrant vegetables, packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants essential for cellular health, energy, and overall vitality. They are nutrient powerhouses that contribute to gut health and reduce inflammation.
- Quality Protein: Adequate protein intake is a cornerstone of our program. It’s vital for muscle repair and growth, keeps you feeling full and satisfied, and helps stabilize blood sugar levels, preventing those energy crashes.
- Mindful Sugar Intake: We advocate for significantly reducing added and refined sugars. While natural sugars from whole fruits are welcomed, minimizing processed sugars helps improve energy, mood, and long-term metabolic health.
- Fibrous Snacks: Snacks rich in fiber keep hunger at bay, support digestive health, and contribute to a balanced microbiome. Think fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds.

The fundamental distinction between the HGG Reset and programs like Whole30 lies precisely in the absence of those rigid “DO/DON’T” lists. We recognize that life is meant to be lived fully, and you only get one opportunity to experience it. Why would you choose to unnecessarily restrict yourself from wholesome, nourishing foods, especially those that are inherently healthy and beneficial? Foods like legumes, whole grains, a variety of fruits, and other natural sugars often fall victim to restrictive diet trends, despite their proven nutritional value and crucial role in a balanced diet.
The HGG Reset is designed to equip you with the knowledge and tools to cultivate healthy habits that are sustainable, forever. It’s not about a temporary fix; it’s about building a foundation for a lifetime of intuitive, joyful eating. The photo above is a perfect example of my meal prep from week 1 – showcasing delicious, vibrant food that supports my body and mind. We take beloved comfort foods and ingeniously transform them into healthier, equally satisfying versions. The HGG Reset will demonstrate that cooking at home can be an incredibly fun, creative, and enjoyable experience, not a chore.
Our program isn’t calorie-focused, nor does it demand meticulous macro counting. Instead, it’s rooted in the principles of intuitive eating – encouraging you to listen to your body’s signals, understand its unique needs, and modify your approach as required. The HGG Reset serves as a flexible GUIDE, empowering you to fuel your life with foods you genuinely love, fostering a peaceful and positive relationship with what you eat, day in and day out.
A Gentle Reminder: My Path, Not a Judgment
Let me reiterate: I am absolutely not here to bash Whole30 or any other detox program. My intention is simply to transparently share my personal journey and explain why such restrictive approaches are not the right fit for *me* and my well-being. If Whole30, or any other program, is working wonders for you and supporting your health goals, then I truly celebrate that! More power to you for finding what resonates with your body and lifestyle.
