We weren’t interested in a typical resort stay; instead, our goal was to truly immerse ourselves in the country, exploring by car and residing in charming local Airbnbs. This approach allowed us to uncover the authentic spirit of Costa Rica.
Our itinerary focused on a captivating segment of Costa Rica’s western and central regions. Flying into Liberia, we journeyed eastward to the lush landscapes of Arenal, then ascended into the mystical cloud forests of Monteverde, before heading back west to the sun-drenched shores of Guanacaste. Our time here was packed with unforgettable experiences. We embarked on invigorating hikes within the national park, marveling at the diverse flora and fauna that thrive in this volcanic landscape. A highlight was swimming at the base of the magnificent La Fortuna Waterfall, where the refreshing waters provided a welcome respite. For ultimate relaxation, we indulged in soothing massages at Baldi Hot Springs, immersing ourselves in the various mineral-rich pools heated by geothermal activity. The grand finale of our Arenal adventure was an exhilarating canyoneering tour with Desafio Adventure Company. While activities in this region might be a bit pricier than anticipated, every dollar was well spent. If I were to do it all again, I wouldn’t change a thing. I particularly recommend the canyoneering tour with Desafio; it’s an incredible opportunity to get up close and personal with the rainforest, descending through canyons and waterfalls on an unforgettable four-hour excursion.
Culinary delights in Arenal were equally memorable. We savored delicious burritos at La Ventanita Café in El Castillo and enjoyed authentic casado (a traditional Costa Rican dish) at La Mesa de Mama, also located in El Castillo. For convenient mornings, we stocked up on breakfast essentials at a local grocery store, allowing us to enjoy leisurely meals at our Airbnb before heading out for our adventures.
Monteverde: Cloud Forest, Mystical Encounters, and Coffee Culture
Our second captivating stop brought us to Monteverde, famously known as the Cloud Forest! This unique ecosystem feels like stepping into a real-life Jurassic Park, but instead of dinosaurs, you’re surrounded by playful monkeys, elusive coatis, and an astonishing diversity of over 400 bird species. The roads are famously winding, often unpaved, and you must navigate around the expansive Lake Arenal (there’s no bridge to cross it directly). What appears to be a mere 72-mile drive can easily take close to 3.5 hours. While scenic, it requires patience and careful driving. Consider hiring a shuttle service if you’re uncomfortable with rugged, winding roads, or ensure you plan your drive during daylight hours.
Guanacaste: Coastal Bliss and Coffee Farm Retreats
Our final destination in Costa Rica proved to be the absolute highlight of our trip: an unforgettable stay on an incredible coffee farm in the Guanacaste region. Words truly cannot convey the sheer beauty and tranquility of this property. Close your eyes and envision driving 20 minutes up a steep, winding dirt road. Upon reaching the summit, you’re greeted by a breathtaking panorama: the vast ocean glistening in the distance, framed by stunning rolling hills and majestic mountains. The property itself is an Eden, boasting vibrant orange and coffee trees, exquisite tropical flowers, a magnificent infinity pool, a soothing hot tub, and a unique three-season kitchen that seamlessly opens to the outdoors. The AirBnB we stayed at was a beautifully appointed guest house adjacent to the main residence, offering us full access to all the luxurious amenities and expansive grounds. During our time in Guanacaste, we largely embraced the property’s abundant offerings. The infinity pool alone was a magnet, but the entire estate provided endless opportunities for exploration and relaxation. The backside of the mountain is lined with thriving coffee and orange trees, interspersed with challenging dirt hiking trails that weave throughout the landscape. These steep trails quickly became part of our daily workout routine, providing invigorating exercise with incredible views. On one of our days, we ventured out of the mountains to visit Playa Coyote, the closest beach to the property, approximately a 45-minute drive. We were virtually the only souls on this pristine stretch of sand for miles, reveling in its peaceful serenity and humid tropical air. For lunch, we discovered the sole restaurant on the beach, El Barco Restaurante and Bar, owned by a charming German couple. There, we enjoyed delicious food and, of course, delightful pina coladas while soaking in the coastal ambiance.

Our Costa Rican adventure truly became a road trip! We rented a reliable Hyundai Tucson for our week-long travels, a decision that proved invaluable for its flexibility and convenience. This allowed us to explore at our own pace, venturing off the beaten path to discover hidden gems. While we had heard various cautionary tales about Costa Rica’s road conditions – some quite challenging – we were eager to embrace the freedom of exploring by car. The Tucson performed admirably, expertly navigating some of the burliest terrain, including unpaved mountain roads, and comfortably accommodating the four of us along with all our luggage. For anyone considering a similar independent travel style, an SUV or 4×4 vehicle is highly recommended to handle the diverse road conditions you’re likely to encounter.
