Holiday Hustle: Balancing Indulgence, Fitness, and Giving Back This Season

Who else has already found themselves indulging in a generous amount of Christmas cookies this year? If your hand is raised, you’re definitely not alone. The holiday season, with its festive cheer and delicious treats, often brings a unique challenge to maintaining our health and fitness goals. It’s a time of celebration, and rightfully so, but it can also feel like a slippery slope when it comes to healthy eating habits.

I’ve certainly tried my best to keep my cookie consumption on the healthier side, leaning towards homemade options like my Gluten-Free Almond Biscotti, which offers a delightful crunch with a slightly better nutritional profile. However, let’s be completely honest: the allure of traditional sugar cookies, slathered with rich homemade buttercream frosting and an abundance of colorful sprinkles, is often irresistible. And yes, I’ve succumbed to that delightful temptation more than a few times!

In years past, I used to be incredibly hard on myself during the holiday season. The thought of eating more than one cookie in a single day felt like a major “healthy living sin.” I would limit myself to tiny bites, constantly battling feelings of guilt and deprivation. This restrictive mindset often took away from the joy and merriment that the holidays are supposed to bring. Thankfully, over time, my perspective has evolved. I’ve realized that life, and especially the holiday season, is all about finding a sustainable balance. Enjoying a few extra cookies or a festive meal isn’t going to derail my entire fitness journey. What matters most is consistency and embracing tomorrow as a fresh start. Three cookies in one sitting won’t kill me, and the beauty is, a new day always brings new opportunities to make healthy choices.

Finding Your Rhythm: Why Consistency in Workouts Matters

While I’ve learned to be more flexible with my diet during the holidays, one aspect of my life I strive to keep consistent is my workout routine. I’ve found that maintaining a semblance of normalcy in my fitness regimen makes it significantly easier to stay on track and “jump back on the wagon” the next day, regardless of any festive indulgences. It’s not just about burning calories; it’s about mental clarity, stress reduction, and preserving that vital energy needed to tackle the busy holiday schedule.

So, how do I manage to stay consistent amidst holiday parties and commitments? My secret weapon is scheduling “workout dates” with my amazing besties, Linley and Lindsey. These pre-arranged sessions create accountability and make fitness a fun, social activity rather than a chore. Linley and I regularly attend Lindsey’s invigorating 7 AM barre strong class, which she teaches at Haute Barre every Wednesday morning. Additionally, once a week, Lindsey joins us for a high-energy workout at Switch. These planned sessions not only keep us active but also provide valuable time to connect and support each other.

The Holiday Hustle: A Workout for a Cause

One day, while chatting after a particularly intense session, we decided to combine our love for fitness with the festive spirit of giving back. We envisioned an event that would celebrate both the holidays and our commitment to fitness: a “Holiday Hustle Workout.” To amplify its impact, we committed that 100% – and more – of all proceeds would go directly towards sponsoring a local family in need, ensuring they could experience the warmth and joy of the holiday season.

The response was overwhelming! We were absolutely thrilled to announce that our community helped us raise over $300! This incredible sum made a tangible difference, allowing us to provide gifts, food, and holiday cheer to a family who truly deserved it. It was a powerful reminder of how fitness can extend beyond personal gain to create positive change in the wider community.

Do this Holiday Hustle Workout to sweat it out over the holiday season! It's a circuit, bootcamp-style workout that mixes strength training and cardio for a full body challenge.

For the event, we rented our favorite studio space in Minneapolis – the very same one where we film many of our workout videos. We capped the class at 20 participants to ensure a personalized and high-energy atmosphere. A fantastic group of ladies showed up, radiating enthusiasm, and the entire event was an absolute blast! The best part? Everyone embraced the holiday spirit by dressing up in festive gear – think Santa hats, elf costumes, and plenty of red and green. It added an extra layer of fun and camaraderie to the workout.

The second best part, for me personally, was the opportunity to teach again! While Lindsey meticulously crafted the workout plan, I had the incredible privilege of co-teaching it with her. Being in front of a class, guiding participants through movements, and feeling that collective energy brought back so many cherished memories. Attending Lindsey’s classes and simply being around her inspiring energy always makes me miss teaching fitness classes immensely, and this event was a wonderful chance to step back into that role for a great cause.
