Key Ingredients for Exceptional Teriyaki Salmon

Crafting truly memorable teriyaki salmon starts with selecting the best ingredients. Here’s a closer look at what makes this recipe shine:

Premium Salmon Fillets

This recipe calls for 1 pound of salmon. You have the flexibility to use a single large salmon fillet, which can be visually stunning, or cut it into smaller, individual portions, as we’ve done. When selecting salmon, look for vibrant, firm flesh with a fresh, oceanic scent. Both wild-caught and farmed salmon work wonderfully, but wild-caught varieties often boast a richer flavor and color due to their natural diet.

Experience the Difference with Wild Alaskan Salmon!

For an unparalleled salmon experience, we highly recommend Surrender Salmon. They are dedicated to sustainably catching wild Alaskan salmon from the pristine waters of Bristol Bay, Alaska. The result is salmon that is remarkably vibrant orange, exceptionally flaky, and incredibly delicious – truly the best quality you can find.

Surrender Salmon is a fantastic family-run company based right here in Minneapolis, and they are dear friends of ours! Supporting local businesses like theirs ensures you get the freshest, highest-quality seafood while contributing to sustainable fishing practices.

Our Signature Homemade Teriyaki Sauce

The heart and soul of this recipe lie in our homemade teriyaki sauce. We absolutely adore it because it opts for natural maple syrup as a sweetener instead of refined white sugar, offering a more nuanced flavor profile and a healthier alternative. Here’s what you’ll need to create this incredibly versatile sauce:

  • Soy Sauce: The umami-rich base, providing savory depth. (For a gluten-free option, use tamari.)
  • Maple Syrup: Our secret to a balanced sweetness with subtle caramel notes, elevating the overall flavor without being overly sugary.
  • Minced Garlic: Adds a pungent, aromatic kick that infuses the salmon with incredible flavor.
  • Grated Ginger: Offers a fresh, spicy warmth that is characteristic of authentic Asian cuisine.
  • Sriracha: A touch of heat for those who enjoy a little spice. Feel free to adjust the amount or omit it entirely if preferred.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Make Perfect Teriyaki Salmon

Achieving perfectly cooked, saucy teriyaki salmon is simpler than you might think. Follow these straightforward steps to create a restaurant-quality meal at home:

  1. Prepare the Salmon: Begin by gently patting each salmon fillet with a paper towel. This crucial step removes excess moisture, which helps the salmon cook more evenly and develop a beautiful, slightly crispy exterior.
  2. Craft the Marinade: In a medium bowl, combine the soy sauce (or tamari), maple syrup, minced garlic, grated ginger, and sriracha (if using). Whisk all the ingredients together thoroughly until well combined, ensuring the flavors are fully integrated.
  3. Marinate for Flavor: Place the salmon fillets into a gallon-size plastic bag or a shallow dish. Pour approximately half of the freshly made teriyaki sauce over the salmon, reserving the other half for thickening later. Gently massage the bag or turn the fillets to ensure they are fully coated. Seal the bag or cover the dish and let the salmon marinate in the refrigerator for 30-45 minutes. This allows the flavors to deeply penetrate the fish.
  4. Preheat and Prepare for Broiling: While the salmon marinates, line a baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup. Preheat your oven to the high broil setting. Position an oven rack about 6-8 inches from the heating element.
  5. Broil the Salmon: Carefully remove the salmon from the marinade, allowing any excess sauce to drip off. Arrange the fillets on the prepared baking sheet, skin-side down. Place the baking sheet under the preheated broiler and cook for approximately 8 minutes. Keep a close eye on the salmon, checking it after 6 minutes, as broiler temperatures can vary and salmon cooks quickly. It should be lightly browned and flaky when done.
  6. Thicken the Reserved Sauce: While the salmon is broiling, prepare the thickening agent. In a small bowl, whisk together the cornstarch with warm water until a smooth slurry forms. Pour the reserved teriyaki sauce into a small saucepan and bring it to a gentle boil over medium heat. Once boiling, slowly whisk in the cornstarch slurry. Continue whisking constantly for 1-2 minutes until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency. Remove from heat immediately.
  7. Serve and Enjoy: Once the salmon is perfectly cooked and flaky, remove it from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes. This allows the juices to redistribute, ensuring a more tender and flavorful fish. Serve your delicious teriyaki salmon alongside your chosen grain and favorite steamed or stir-fried vegetables, drizzled generously with the freshly thickened teriyaki sauce. Garnish with sesame seeds for added texture and visual appeal.

Optimal Marination Time for Teriyaki Salmon

For any salmon marinade, a general rule of thumb to achieve optimal flavor penetration without compromising the fish’s texture is to marinate your salmon for approximately 30 to 45 minutes. While you might be tempted to marinate longer, salmon is delicate, and extended exposure to acidic marinades can begin to “cook” the fish, altering its texture.

Alternative Cooking Methods for Salmon

While broiling offers a wonderfully quick and easy method, salmon is incredibly versatile and can be prepared using several other techniques, each yielding a unique texture and flavor profile:

  • Grilled Salmon: Perfect for summer, grilling imparts a smoky char and crispy skin, ideal for outdoor cooking.
  • Sous Vide Salmon: This method ensures perfectly cooked salmon every time, with an incredibly tender and moist interior, by cooking it precisely in a temperature-controlled water bath.
  • Air Fryer Salmon: For quick and crispy results with minimal oil, the air fryer is a fantastic option, delivering a beautifully browned exterior.
  • Pan-Seared Salmon: Achieve a golden-brown, crispy skin and a tender, flaky interior by searing salmon on the stovetop in a hot pan.

Perfect Pairings: What to Serve with Teriyaki Salmon

Once your delectable teriyaki salmon is ready, the possibilities for creating a complete and satisfying meal are endless. Here are some fantastic serving suggestions to complement its rich flavors:

Grains for a Complete Meal:

  • White Sticky Rice: Its slightly sweet and fluffy texture perfectly absorbs the savory teriyaki sauce.
  • Brown Rice: A healthier, nutty alternative that adds fiber and a pleasant chewiness to the dish.
  • Fried Rice: For a more elaborate side, homemade fried rice adds extra vegetables and flavors that harmonize beautifully with teriyaki.
  • Cauliflower Rice: A low-carb, gluten-free option that provides a similar texture to traditional rice while adding more vegetables to your plate.
  • Quinoa: Another excellent protein and fiber-rich grain that serves as a wonderful base.

Vibrant Vegetable Sides:

  • Steamed Broccoli: Simple, healthy, and a classic pairing. The mild bitterness of broccoli cuts through the richness of the salmon.

  • Bok Choy: Lightly sautéed bok choy provides a refreshing, slightly bitter contrast.

Frequently Asked Questions About Teriyaki Salmon

How long should salmon be marinated for the best flavor?

For optimal flavor absorption and to maintain the salmon’s delicate texture, we recommend marinating salmon for approximately 30-45 minutes. Marinating for too long, especially with acidic ingredients, can begin to “cook” the fish, resulting in a mushy texture.

What are the best side dishes to serve with salmon teriyaki?

Salmon teriyaki pairs wonderfully with a variety of sides. We highly recommend serving it with your favorite grain, such as white sticky rice or wholesome brown rice, alongside vibrant stir-fried or steamed vegetables like broccoli, asparagus, or a mix of bell peppers and snap peas. A fresh green salad can also provide a refreshing contrast.

How do you know when teriyaki salmon is perfectly cooked?

You’ll know your salmon is perfectly cooked when its internal temperature reaches 125ºF to 130ºF at its thickest part. The flesh should transform from a translucent, raw appearance to an opaque, light pink color. When gently flaked with a fork, it should separate easily. Using a reliable meat thermometer is the most accurate way to ensure doneness.

Can I use frozen salmon for this recipe?

Absolutely! If using frozen salmon, ensure it is fully thawed before beginning the recipe. Thaw salmon overnight in the refrigerator or by placing it in a sealed bag under cold running water until completely defrosted. Patting it very dry after thawing is even more crucial to achieve the best texture.

Is this teriyaki salmon recipe gluten-free?

This recipe can easily be made gluten-free by substituting regular soy sauce with tamari, which is a gluten-free alternative. All other ingredients in our homemade teriyaki sauce are naturally gluten-free, making it a safe and delicious option for those with dietary restrictions.

Pro Tip!

Mastering Salmon Internal Temperature

The key to succulent, perfectly cooked salmon is knowing when it’s done. Always aim for an internal temperature of 125ºF to 130ºF for medium-rare to medium, ensuring a moist and tender result. The color should be a uniform light pink throughout, and the flesh should be firm to the touch yet easily flake with a fork. Invest in a good instant-read thermometer for consistent perfection!

Storage and Reheating Tips for Teriyaki Salmon

Proper storage ensures your delicious teriyaki salmon remains fresh and enjoyable for subsequent meals, making it ideal for meal prepping:

Transfer any leftover, cooled salmon into an airtight container. Store it in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. This ensures its freshness and safety for consumption.

To reheat your teriyaki salmon:

  • Microwave Method: For a quick reheat, place salmon on a microwave-safe plate, cover lightly to retain moisture, and microwave for 90 seconds to 2 minutes, or until thoroughly warm.
  • Oven Method: For best results and to prevent drying out, reheat salmon in the oven. Place it on a baking sheet, cover loosely with foil, and warm at 350ºF (175ºC) for approximately 10-15 minutes, or until heated through.
  • Skillet Method: Gently warm in a non-stick skillet over medium-low heat with a tablespoon of water or broth, covered, until heated through. This helps prevent it from drying out.
