Beyond the Label: Understanding Organic Valley’s Commitment
Who is Organic Valley? A Cooperative Built on Principle
Organic Valley stands out as a unique entity in the food industry: it is a farmer-owned cooperative. This means the business is not run by distant shareholders or corporate executives, but by the very farmers who dedicate their lives to producing the food. This model is revolutionary, ensuring that decisions prioritize the well-being of the land, animals, and farming families, rather than just profit margins. This approach undeniably works, as evidenced by their nationwide success and unwavering commitment to certified organic, 100% grass-fed dairy products.
Their mission extends far beyond simply producing organic dairy. It’s a holistic philosophy centered on creating a better food system for everyone. Here’s what makes Organic Valley truly exceptional:
- Nurturing Small-Scale, Family-Owned Farms: Unlike industrial agriculture, Organic Valley champions small, independent family farms. This approach not only preserves a vital way of life but also fosters a deeper connection to the land and ensures meticulous, personalized care for animals. These farms are often integral parts of their local communities, contributing to local economies and traditions.
- Pioneering a Regional Model for Freshness and Sustainability: Organic Valley employs a groundbreaking regional model where milk is produced, bottled, and distributed within the very region it’s farmed. This drastically reduces the distance food travels from farm to table, minimizing carbon footprint and ensuring unparalleled freshness. It’s a testament to their commitment to environmental stewardship and supporting local economies, a principle we wholeheartedly endorse.
- Prioritizing Uncompromising Animal Welfare: For Organic Valley, animal welfare isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a fundamental principle. Their cows are raised in open pastures, allowed to graze naturally and express their innate behaviors. They are fed a 100% grass-fed diet, a choice that significantly impacts their health, happiness, and the nutritional quality of the milk they produce. This humane treatment is a cornerstone of their ethical framework.
- Delivering High-Quality, Wholesome Food: They are deeply invested in the quality of what we consume. By adhering to rigorous organic standards, Organic Valley ensures their products are free from toxic pesticides, GMOs, artificial hormones, and antibiotics. This commitment translates into clean, nutrient-dense food available at a fair price, making healthy choices accessible to more families.
- Nutritional Powerhouse: Organic Valley milk isn’t just organic; it’s packed with essential nutrients. It is notably richer in Omega-3 fatty acids – healthy fats crucial for brain and heart health – and Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA), which is celebrated for its immune-boosting properties. These natural health benefits are a direct result of their grass-fed farming practices and the overall well-being of their herds.
The extensive list of their positive contributions truly underscores why we are so excited to partner with such an impactful brand. Organic Valley is making a tangible difference not only on a national scale but also within the individual farming communities and the lives of consumers who choose their products.

A Day on the Gretebeck Farm: Witnessing True Organic Life
Today, let’s delve into the heart of our visit: the fascinating reality of “life on an Organic Valley Farm.” Team Fit Foodie’s recent opportunity to get hands-on at The Gretebecks Organic Valley Farm in Cashton, Wisconsin, was nothing short of transformative. If I had to sum up the experience in one word, it would be “happy.” The land itself felt vibrant and alive, the animals exuded contentment, and the farmers radiated a deep sense of purpose and joy.
This farm presented a striking contrast to the often-disturbing imagery of conventional dairy operations popularized in documentaries. The Gretebeck farm is run exactly as a farm should be: vast open pastures stretched as far as the eye could see, hundreds of healthy, happy animals (not just cows, but goats, pigs, chickens, and more!) roamed freely, and there was not a single chemical in sight. Meeting Tucker and Becky Gretebeck, the real people behind this incredible operation, offered invaluable insight into the dedication, challenges, and immense satisfaction that define a farmer’s life.
Tucker and Becky are, without a doubt, two of the most hardworking, genuinely joyful, and incredibly knowledgeable individuals we’ve ever met. Their encyclopedic understanding extended to every minute detail of their farm, right down to knowing each of their hundreds of animals by name – a testament to their profound connection and individualized care. As fourth or fifth-generation farmers, their family legacy of organic farming spans generations, an astonishing five generations of sustainable practices! They spoke with palpable passion about their chosen lifestyle, their beloved cows, and the immensely positive impact their partnership with Organic Valley has had on their family’s livelihood and their ability to uphold their farming values.
The Gretebeck family cares for approximately 125 cows in total, with about 50 of those residing directly on Tucker and Becky’s personal farm. These cows enjoy the freedom of grazing in lush pastures throughout the day and are milked twice daily. What truly struck us was the sheer scope of their responsibilities: Becky also manages a full-time job off the farm, and apart from their two children (when they’re not in school), there are no additional farmhands. This means that the entire ecosystem of their small family farm – every cow, goat, pig, bunny, and horse – is lovingly cared for by just one dedicated family. It’s not merely a job; it’s a profound lifestyle choice, demanding unwavering commitment and passion. And yes, every single animal on the farm has a name – a truly “holy cow” moment (pun absolutely intended) that underscores their deep respect for each creature.

While Tucker and Becky made the demanding task of running a farm look idyllic, they were also refreshingly candid about the relentless hard work involved. Being a farmer isn’t a 9-to-5 job; it’s a 24/7 commitment. There are no spontaneous vacations or casual days off. The animals, the land, and the cycle of nature dictate their schedule, requiring constant vigilance and dedication. It’s a testament to their passion that they embrace this demanding lifestyle with such grace and enthusiasm.
Lessons from the Land: Unpacking Organic Farming Practices
During our time with Tucker and Becky, we gleaned some fascinating insights into the intricacies of organic, grass-fed dairy farming. Here are a few notable facts:
- Diverse Pasture Management: They strategically plant three different types of grass in their pastures. This isn’t arbitrary; it serves a dual purpose. Firstly, it provides a wider variety of essential nutrients for the cows, contributing to their overall health and the richness of their milk. Secondly, it acts as an ecological safeguard: if adverse weather conditions impact one type of grass, the pasture isn’t entirely wiped out, ensuring continuous forage for the herd and resilience against environmental challenges.
- Rotational Grazing for Regeneration: Their pastures are meticulously divided into various sections, implementing a sophisticated rotational grazing pattern. This practice allows each section of pasture ample time to rest and regenerate after grazing. It’s a sustainable method that ensures the long-term health and productivity of the land, preventing overgrazing and promoting biodiversity within the soil. This thoughtful approach directly contributes to richer soil health and more nutrient-dense grass.
- The Wisdom of the Lead Cow: In every herd, there’s a designated “lead cow.” This animal is typically the most intelligent and experienced, naturally guiding the herd through the pastures. When it’s time for milking, Becky or Tucker simply call the lead cow, and the entire herd intuitively follows her, demonstrating a fascinating aspect of bovine social structure and intelligent animal husbandry.
- Cows’ Unique Digestive System: Cows possess a four-chamber stomach, a remarkable biological adaptation. This complex digestive system is perfectly engineered to efficiently break down and process tough plant materials like grass, extracting maximum nutrients. This anatomical marvel is why a grass-fed diet is so natural and beneficial for them.
- Understanding a Heifer: A heifer refers to a young female cow that has not yet given birth to a calf and, consequently, has not yet begun to produce milk. This term distinguishes her from a mature cow that is actively lactating, providing clarity in farm terminology.
