SXSW: The Encore

An Unforgettable Austin Adventure: SXSW, Music, and Culinary Delights

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, everyone! You won’t believe it – I completely forgot to pack anything green. I feel like a total novice, but the vibrant energy of Austin, especially during the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival, quickly made me forget my sartorial oversight. This city pulsates with an electrifying buzz that’s infectious, pulling you into its unique rhythm from the moment you arrive. Join me as I recount the incredible experiences from last night and today, filled with live music, mouth-watering food, and exciting festival discoveries.

Last Night: Austin’s Electric Vibe and Culinary Treasures

My first evening in Austin proved to be an exhilarating introduction to what this dynamic city offers. The downtown area truly comes alive after dark, boasting a nightlife that is unbelievably rockin’. It instantly brought to mind the bustling streets of Chicago, but with a distinct Texan twist that adds an extra layer of charm and authenticity. Every corner seemed to hold a new adventure, from hidden music venues to lively eateries, all contributing to an atmosphere of pure excitement.

The Art of People Watching

One of the most captivating aspects of Austin’s downtown scene is the phenomenal people watching. During SXSW, the streets transform into a parade of diverse individuals: aspiring artists, tech innovators, fashion-forward festival-goers, and local Texans. Observing the eclectic mix of styles, conversations, and sheer enthusiasm provides endless entertainment and a unique insight into the city’s vibrant culture. It’s a true spectacle, and an essential part of the Austin experience.

A Culinary Journey: Austin’s Food Scene

Austin’s food selection is absolutely to die for, especially if you, like me, are a fervent supporter of “mom and pop” eateries. This city truly excels in offering a vast array of unique, locally-owned establishments, serving up flavors that you won’t find anywhere else. The Tex-Mex style cuisine, in particular, is a highlight, with every restaurant putting its own delicious spin on classic dishes. We kicked off our culinary adventure with a quick dinner at a memorable spot called “The Short Bus.”

“The Short Bus” Delights

Our experience at “The Short Bus” was nothing short of delicious. Their commitment to freshness was evident, with homemade bread that was perfectly toasted, creating the ideal base for their creative sandwiches. I opted for “The Teacher’s Pet,” a delightful concoction that truly lived up to its name. The combination of savory ingredients, perfectly seasoned fillings, and that incredible fresh bread made for an unforgettable meal, setting a high standard for Austin’s casual dining scene. It’s exactly the kind of unpretentious, high-quality food experience that defines Austin.

Frozen Yogurt Indulgence at Berry Austin

On our way to catch the much-anticipated performances of Brett Dennen and Matt Nathanson, we stumbled upon not one, but two different frozen yogurt places—on the same street! It felt like a true Austin moment, embodying the city’s playful and indulgent spirit. When in Austin, one simply must partake. We decided on Berry Austin, a self-serve haven where I may have gotten a little carried away, piling up a whopping 11.1 ounces! But don’t judge; I simply had to try every single flavor. My absolute favorites turned out to be the refreshing mint and the rich, creamy peanut butter. It was the perfect sweet interlude before a night of music.

Live Music at The W Hotel: Brett Dennen & Matt Nathanson

The evening culminated in an incredible live music experience at The W Hotel, an elegantly designed venue situated right in the heart of downtown Austin. The hotel’s ambiance exuded a modern and fresh vibe, providing a sophisticated backdrop for the performances. Both Brett Dennen and Matt Nathanson, two of my absolute favorite artists, graced the stage. Before the show, we even managed to squeeze in a mini photo shoot on one of the hotel’s stylish balconies, capturing the excitement of the moment.

Each artist played for about half an hour, a typical format during SXSW where a rapid turnaround allows for a multitude of different artists to perform across various venues. This fast-paced schedule means you can catch snippets of many acts, but it also means valuing every moment of a performance. I must reiterate that Matt Nathanson truly stands out as one of the most down-to-earth performers I have ever had the pleasure of seeing. His genuine stage presence and heartfelt interaction with the audience make his shows incredibly special. My night, however, had an early end around midnight after being rejected by five different venues due to the 21+ rule. Oh, if only I could have been born just one month earlier!

Today: SXSW Trade Show, Blogging, and The Strokes Anticipation

The second day in Austin commenced bright and early with another quick workout session. While maintaining a fitness routine during travel can often be challenging, I find that these focused workouts truly rejuvenate my body, providing the energy needed to tackle a busy festival schedule. Today’s routine included an efficient 30-minute run on the treadmill, followed by a series of lunges and squats, ensuring I felt energized and ready to explore.

Exploring the SXSW Trade Show

By 11 AM, we were back in downtown Austin, eager to delve into the heart of SXSW. My friend Claire, whose awesome blog is always worth checking out, and I headed straight to the official SXSW Trade Show. The atmosphere inside was electric, a buzzing hub of innovation, creativity, and incredible people. It was a wonderland of discoveries, featuring so many cool new technologies and emerging brands, along with the added bonus of abundant free swag! It’s truly a place where you can immerse yourself in the cutting edge of various industries.

A Blogger’s Dream: Meeting BLOGGER!

Guess who made an appearance at the Trade Show? None other than BLOGGER! As an avid blogger myself, this was an incredibly exciting encounter. I spent a significant amount of time picking their brains, asking a multitude of “bloggity questions” ranging from SEO best practices to content strategy. Brett, one of their awesome techies, was particularly helpful, offering invaluable blog pointers. He even assisted me in adding some cool social media buttons, which you can now find on the right-hand side of Fit Foodie Finds. To top off this amazing interaction, he featured Fit Foodie Finds on Blog of Note as the blog of the day! How incredibly cool is that? It was a truly validating and inspiring moment for my blogging journey.

Festival Fuel: Free Fajitas and Fruit Salad

After the intensity and excitement of the Trade Show, I was famished. I’m someone who’s accustomed to gnawing on food constantly throughout the day, so a substantial lunch was definitely in order. We stepped outside the convention center and were delighted to find a fantastic fajita bar set up. The best part? Being a badge holder meant it was absolutely free! I indulged in some savory fajitas and also grabbed a fresh, vibrant fruit salad to satisfy my sweet tooth. It was the perfect, wholesome meal to refuel and prepare for the afternoon’s activities.

Insightful Sessions and The Strokes Anticipation

Post-lunch, we ventured back into the convention center for some truly insightful sessions focusing on branding strategies and the evolving landscape of hip hop identity. These discussions offered fascinating perspectives on how artists and brands cultivate their public image in the digital age. I gathered many thoughts and insights from these talks, and I’ll definitely be sharing more on those topics in a future post, so stay tuned!

Tonight’s grand plan is to head back downtown for another fantastic dinner, followed by what promises to be an epic concert: THE STROKES! AHHH! The excitement is palpable. With so many people converging on Austin for SXSW, getting into popular venues can be a challenge, but we’re hopeful we can secure our spot to see one of my absolute favorite bands perform live. The energy here is simply incredible, and every moment is an adventure.
