Finding the perfect sports bra can feel like an unending quest, especially when your body has undergone significant changes. This journey began for me back in high school, a time when my body was rapidly transforming. I was a late bloomer, and my chest development seemed to happen almost overnight, bringing with it a newfound awareness of my changing physique. From initially wishing for a fuller chest to suddenly grappling with the realities of C-cups, it became clear that this transformation would impact more than just my wardrobe choices; it would affect my comfort and performance as a competitive athlete.
Growing up, I was deeply involved in sports, and while I initially thought having a more prominent bust would be desirable, I quickly realized it often felt more like a hindrance. The constant bounce, the discomfort, and the difficulty finding adequate support became a recurring challenge. This early experience laid the groundwork for a lifelong understanding of how essential the right athletic gear is, particularly for women who are serious about their fitness. It’s a topic often overlooked but profoundly impacts daily life and athletic pursuits. So, if you’re an active woman who has ever struggled with finding the right sports bra, you’ve come to the right place – we’re diving deep into breast size, body image, and the ultimate search for optimal support.
My journey took an unexpected turn during my sophomore year of college when I experienced a period of extreme weight loss. I went from a healthy 153 pounds to 118 pounds in a span of just three months, a result of severe dietary restriction and excessive exercise. During this time, my C-cups diminished to a small B-cup. While this period was marked by an unhealthy relationship with food and my body, it paradoxically offered a momentary relief from the physical challenges of a larger bust in sports. I could perform activities like jumping jacks without discomfort, and fitting into desired shirts became easier. However, this fleeting comfort came at a high cost, as I experienced significant health issues, including the loss of my menstrual cycle, and profound emotional distress. It became clear that this unsustainable lifestyle was not conducive to happiness or true well-being.
Recognizing the urgent need to prioritize my health, I embarked on a recovery journey to regain a balanced and healthy body. Over the course of two years, I slowly but steadily gained back the weight I had lost. As my body healed and returned to a healthy state, an interesting physiological change occurred: my bust size increased significantly, leading me to develop an even larger chest than before. This unexpected development highlighted the complex interplay between body fat, overall health, and breast size, a topic many women can relate to as their bodies evolve through different life stages. It was a testament to the body’s resilience and its unique ways of responding to health and recovery.
Today, my weight is similar to what it was before my eating disorder, but my body composition is vastly different. I possess more muscle mass and a lower overall body fat percentage, yet my bust size is now a prominent DD. While I hesitate to directly attribute this dramatic increase solely to my recovery journey, the timing of its development after regaining a healthy weight is undeniably intriguing. Adjusting to this new, larger chest has been a long and often challenging process, requiring immense self-acceptance and a conscious effort to feel comfortable and confident in my own skin. I’ve always considered myself relatively modest, and navigating a larger bust in everyday life, especially in active wear, has presented its own unique set of challenges. It’s particularly difficult to find athletic attire that offers both sufficient support and appropriate coverage without feeling overly exposed.
The practicalities of this size difference often manifest most acutely when shopping for bras. I’m a 34 band size, which typically corresponds to a small, but my DD cup size necessitates at least an XL. These two measurements are inherently at odds, creating a constant struggle in finding a single bra that fits correctly. If I prioritize cup size for adequate coverage, the band is inevitably too loose, offering minimal support. Conversely, if I choose a band that fits snugly, the cups are far too small, leading to discomfort and an unflattering fit. This is a common predicament for many athletic women with larger busts, turning bra shopping into a consistently frustrating experience. For this reason, I almost exclusively wear sports bras, reserving traditional bras only for formal occasions where a dress or specific outfit dictates their necessity.
The idea for this post has been brewing in my mind for quite some time, but tackling such a personal and often sensitive topic felt daunting to do alone. Thankfully, I have an incredible team who shares my vision and enthusiasm. When I approached them with the idea of a collaborative post, including a photoshoot in just sports bras and an open discussion about their experiences, they didn’t hesitate. Their willingness to share their stories and favorite sports bra recommendations was truly inspiring. What we discovered through this process is that while we all have incredibly diverse body types and breast sizes, we share a collective appreciation for Lululemon’s sports bras. This isn’t a sponsored post; our recommendations stem from genuine daily wear and personal satisfaction. Our varied perspectives aim to offer valuable insights for women of all shapes and sizes seeking comfortable and supportive athletic wear. Let’s dive into their top picks!
Lee’s Favorite: Lululemon Energy Bra
My Profile: 5’8″ – 34DD – Athletic Build, Large Bust.
The Lululemon Energy Bra is, without a doubt, a true game-changer in the world of sports bras. Priced at $52.00, it is an investment that delivers exceptional value, proving worth every single penny. Its design prioritizes fuller coverage, unparalleled comfort, and robust support, making it the most superior sports bra I have ever encountered. My dedication to this bra is evident in my collection of over eight different colors—a testament to its indispensable role in my wardrobe, given my preference for sports bras over traditional ones. When shopping for clothes, if a top doesn’t complement the Energy Bra, I’m likely to pass on the purchase, highlighting just how integral it has become to my daily style and comfort.
One crucial detail for prospective buyers with a similar build is the sizing. While I typically wear a size 6 in Lululemon tops, I opt for a size 8 in the Energy Bra. Although I could technically squeeze into a size 6, the resulting constriction would severely limit my breathing and overall comfort, especially during workouts. The Energy Bra’s design features a thoughtfully engineered racerback strap system that offers ample length and support, crucial for larger busts. Furthermore, the cups provide extensive coverage, ensuring my breasts are fully contained without any spillage, a common frustration with many other sports bras. It’s a sad reality that a vast majority of sports bras, even in larger sizes like M, L, and XL, often fall short on adequate coverage for women with a fuller bust. A significant advantage of this bra is its inclusion of removable cups, which I immediately take out. For women with larger breasts, additional padding is typically unnecessary and often counterproductive, adding unwanted bulk.
The Energy Bra stands out for its ability to minimize bounce during high-impact activities, thanks to its compressive yet comfortable fit. The fabric is soft against the skin, and its moisture-wicking properties are excellent, keeping me dry and comfortable even during intense training sessions. For anyone with an athletic build and a larger bust seeking reliable support, superior comfort, and a flattering fit, the Lululemon Energy Bra is an absolute must-have. It simplifies the often-complex process of finding effective athletic wear, allowing you to focus on your performance rather than your bra.

Linley’s Favorite: Lululemon Energy Bra
My Profile: 5’3″ – 32C – Petite with a Fuller Bust.
Hello, friends! Linley here, ready to share my insights on managing a fuller bust as a petite individual. At 5 feet 3 inches, many might expect me to wear a modest A or B cup. However, for as long as I can recall, I’ve proudly sported a healthy 32C (a big thank you to my genes for that!). This size often fluctuates, reaching an easy D-cup when Aunt Flow comes to visit. This unique combination of a petite frame and a significant bust size creates persistent challenges when searching for everyday bras that comfortably fit around my waist while providing adequate lift and firmness. As an active member of Team Fit Foodie, my days are typically fast-paced and filled with various vigorous activities, making it absolutely essential to have my “girls” securely under control.
Before the transformative discovery of Lululemon’s Energy Bra, my running routine necessitated wearing two, sometimes even three, sports bras simultaneously to achieve sufficient support. This layering was cumbersome, restrictive, and often led to discomfort. My entire perspective on active wear shifted when Lululemon entered the picture. While the exact model I’m wearing in the accompanying photo is no longer produced, the closest and most effective current equivalent is the Energy Bra. Its design offers exceptional comfort, eliminates any need for constant tugging or adjustment, and most importantly, significantly minimizes bounce during high-impact movements. The relief and improved performance I’ve experienced are profound; my bust is undoubtedly much happier and better supported, allowing me to fully engage in my activities without distraction.
For petite women with a fuller bust, the Energy Bra is a revelation. It effectively addresses the dual challenge of finding a band that fits a smaller frame while providing generous cup coverage. The secure fit ensures that even during intense workouts, movement is controlled and comfortable. The fabric is soft, breathable, and holds up remarkably well to frequent washing and wear, making it a durable and reliable choice. This bra empowers me to move freely and confidently, knowing I have the ultimate support without sacrificing comfort or style. It truly streamlines my athletic wardrobe, allowing me to focus entirely on my fitness goals.
Emily’s Favorite: Free To Be and Free To Be (Wild) Bras – Lululemon
My Profile: 5’8″ – 32B – Lean Build with a Moderate Bust.
In contrast to my fellow #TeamFitFoodie ladies, my moderate bust size typically doesn’t demand extreme levels of support, making my sports bra requirements slightly different. For me, the Lululemon Free To Be and Free To Be (Wild) bras are absolute essentials. What I love most about these bras is their exceptional comfort; they provide just the right amount of gentle support without making my B-cups feel overly constricted or “strapped in.” That suffocating, “can’t breathe” sensation that some high-compression bras induce is precisely what I aim to avoid, and these bras perfectly deliver on that front.
Despite being primarily designed for yoga, the versatility of the Free To Be bras makes them my go-to choice for an incredibly wide range of activities. Whether I’m flowing through a vinyasa yoga class, embarking on a long-distance run, powering through a high-intensity A20 session at Alchemy, or tackling a dynamic Switch circuit, these bras consistently perform. Their lightweight design and comfortable fit mean I can transition seamlessly between different types of workouts without needing to change my support. This adaptability is a huge advantage for my varied fitness routine.
Much like Lee, I find myself gravitating towards wearing sports bras even when I’m not actively working out. The Free To Be bras excel in this casual wear capacity too, thanks to their stylish and intricate strappy designs. They double as a fashionable accessory, adding a fun and sporty element when paired with a tank top or an off-the-shoulder tee. This aesthetic appeal, combined with their comfort and functionality, is precisely why I own the Free To Be in six different colors. My philosophy is simple: when you discover a bra that you genuinely love, one that perfectly combines comfort, style, and adequate support for your needs, embrace it fully and wear it as often as possible. These bras embody that principle for me, making them an indispensable part of my wardrobe.
Choosing the Right Sports Bra for Your Body and Activity
Finding the ideal sports bra is crucial not only for comfort but also for protecting breast tissue and optimizing athletic performance. With so many options available, it can be overwhelming to make the right choice. Here are key factors to consider to ensure you select a sports bra that truly meets your needs:
1. Determine Your Activity Level:
- Low Impact: Activities like yoga, Pilates, walking, or strength training require less support. Look for bras with minimal compression and comfortable, flexible fabrics. The Lululemon Free To Be is an excellent example for this category.
- Medium Impact: For cycling, brisk walking, hiking, or elliptical training, you’ll need moderate support. Bras in this category typically offer more compression or light encapsulation to control bounce.
- High Impact: Running, jumping, HIIT, or intense cardio demands maximum support. These bras often feature strong compression, encapsulation (separate cups), or a combination of both, along with wider straps and sturdy bands to lock everything in place. The Lululemon Energy Bra is a prime choice for high-impact activities, especially for larger busts.
2. Understand the Fit:
- Band: The band is responsible for about 80% of the support. It should be snug but not uncomfortably tight, lying flat against your rib cage without riding up your back. You should be able to fit two fingers underneath it.
- Straps: Straps should feel secure but not dig into your shoulders. Adjustable straps are a bonus for customizing the lift. Racerback designs, like the Energy Bra, often distribute weight more evenly, reducing pressure points.
- Cups: Your breasts should be fully enclosed in the cups with no spillage over the top or sides. There should also be no gaping or excess fabric. For larger busts, ensure the cup material is thick enough to prevent nipple show-through.
3. Material and Technology:
- Moisture-Wicking Fabric: Essential for keeping you dry and comfortable by drawing sweat away from your skin. Look for materials like polyester, nylon, and spandex blends.
- Breathability: Mesh panels or strategic cutouts can enhance airflow, which is particularly important during intense workouts.
- Seams: Flat seams can prevent chafing and irritation, especially important for prolonged wear.
4. Compression vs. Encapsulation:
- Compression Bras: These bras press your breasts flat against your chest to reduce movement. They are typically best for smaller to medium busts and low-to-medium impact activities.
- Encapsulation Bras: These bras have individual cups for each breast, offering shaping and support similar to a regular bra, but with added athletic features. They are excellent for larger busts and high-impact activities, as they provide superior support by holding each breast separately.
- Combination Bras: Many high-support sports bras offer both compression and encapsulation for maximum control.
5. When to Replace Your Sports Bra:
Even the best sports bras have a lifespan. Generally, you should consider replacing your sports bra every 6-12 months, or after about 30-40 washes, especially if you wear it frequently for high-impact activities. Signs it’s time for a new one include stretched-out bands or straps, loss of elasticity in the fabric, visible wear and tear, or reduced support and comfort.
By keeping these guidelines in mind, you can confidently choose a sports bra that provides the necessary support, comfort, and durability, allowing you to focus on achieving your fitness goals with confidence and ease. Your body deserves the best support, no matter your activity!
Last but not least, I need your help!
