The Essential 20s Playbook

Reflections at 25: Essential Life Lessons I Wish I Knew at 20

Today, instead of a traditional recap, I want to take a moment for deeper reflection. It’s truly incredible to realize that Fit Foodie Finds (FFF) is celebrating its 5th birthday, and looking back, an immense amount has changed since this little passion project began. Five years ago, at the age of 20, I was a junior in college, navigating the complex journey of recovering from an eating disorder. My younger self was often anxious, meticulously rigid, and overly self-conscious, constantly burdened by the opinions of others and holding impossibly high standards for myself. The journey since then has been a profound period of soul-searching and transformation.

Over these pivotal five years, I made the life-altering decision to bid sayonara to my stable corporate job, embracing the exhilarating challenge of working for myself full-time. My wanderlust took over, leading to extensive travel adventures that broadened my horizons. I experienced the highs and lows of my first serious relationship, which eventually led to my first significant breakup, a period of immense personal growth. Driven by a newfound entrepreneurial spirit, I even launched two additional websites. Most importantly, I began living with intention, prioritizing my own happiness and finding genuine joy in every aspect of my life. It feels like I’ve rediscovered a youthful energy, an unburdened spirit, even as I embrace being an old soul. While I hold no regrets about my early twenties, there are certainly pieces of advice I wish I could have given my younger self, lessons that have shaped who I am today.

Embrace Your Quirks: If You’re Not Weird, You’re Boring

One of the most liberating realizations I’ve had is that being unique, or “weird,” is a superpower. I’ve wholeheartedly embraced my quirks, and honestly, I think it’s fantastic. If you follow me on Snapchat (fitfoodiefinds), you’ll quickly discover my unconventional side. Even through my blog, my occasional “ball obsession” might give you a hint of my eccentricities. But seriously, I’m genuinely weird. I make silly faces, blurt out random thoughts, sing constantly (not just in the shower!), and laugh at myself often. The list goes on. In my 25 years, I’ve learned that conforming to what’s “normal” is a path to boredom. Just because everyone else is doing something doesn’t mean it’s right for you. Some of the most captivating people I’ve met are those who keep you on your toes, whose next comment might be a little strange, brilliantly witty, or wonderfully sarcastic. Embrace your authentic self; it’s what makes you interesting and unforgettable.

Cherish Your Body: It’s a Wonderland, Treat It With Respect

This piece of advice holds a particularly significant weight for me. Many 20-year-olds might treat their bodies poorly through unhealthy eating habits or lack of exercise. My experience at 20 was on the opposite end of that spectrum: I wasn’t eating enough and exercised excessively, creating a dangerously unhealthy definition of what “healthy” truly meant. In a way, I was treating my body just as poorly as a college student engaged in binge drinking, but through restriction and overexertion. No bueno. Looking back, I would actually encourage my younger self to occasionally indulge, perhaps enjoy a night out and then a slice of pizza, and learn to be completely okay with it. This isn’t to say such activities should be a daily routine, but rather to emphasize that life thrives on moderation, not on extreme rigidity or deprivation. Your body is an incredible vessel; it deserves nourishment, movement, and kindness, not punishment or neglect.

Prioritize Joy: Happiness Trumps Material Wealth

This message is for all those navigating their twenties: true happiness always outweighs monetary gain. Don’t just take my word for it; experience it for yourself. What constitutes happiness is deeply personal, so take the time to discover what it means for you. Perhaps it’s a daily walk by the lake, the simple pleasure of baking cookies, or the meditative craft of crocheting a scarf. Society often pushes the narrative that financial success is the ultimate goal, but a secure job or a fat bank account won’t guarantee contentment if your soul feels unfulfilled. Define success on your own terms. Pursue activities and passions that ignite your spirit, nurture your well-being, and bring a smile to your face, regardless of their monetary return. Remember, #youdoyou, and your version of happiness is valid and worth pursuing above all else.

Connect Authentically: Cyberspace is Great, But Real Life is Essential

In our hyper-connected world, this advice is more critical than ever. Technology, and social media in particular, can be an all-consuming force, always “on.” While it offers incredible opportunities for connection and information, it’s absolutely necessary to intentionally switch it off each day. Make a conscious effort to disconnect from the digital realm and reinvest that time into real-life interactions, face-to-face with your friends and family. Digital connections, while valuable, can never fully replace the depth, nuance, and emotional resonance of in-person relationships. Prioritize those moments of genuine presence, shared laughter, and meaningful conversation. These authentic human connections are the bedrock of a fulfilling life, fostering stronger bonds and deeper understanding that no screen can replicate.

Embrace the Unexpected: Be Spontaneous

Five years ago, spontaneity was a foreign concept to me. Every single day of my life was meticulously planned, and I adhered to that plan with unwavering discipline, often structuring my entire day around my meals and workouts. Over the past half-decade, I’ve actively challenged myself to inject a little more spontaneity into my life daily. This journey has taught me a fundamental truth: many aspects of life simply cannot be planned. The more willing you are to let go of rigid control and simply go with the flow, the easier and more joyful life becomes. Spontaneity is a beautiful thing; it opens doors to unexpected adventures, reduces stress, and teaches adaptability. It allows for serendipitous moments and reminds you that sometimes, the best experiences are the ones you never anticipated.

Leverage Your Strengths: Do What You Excel At and Delegate the Rest

It’s tempting to believe that doing everything yourself is the most efficient path, but when it comes down to it, a cohesive team will almost always outperform an individual. Learning to collaborate with others is an invaluable skill. Be a leader, build a supportive team, and understand the power of delegation. Focus your energy on the tasks where you truly shine and seek help or outsource the areas where you struggle. Allowing others to contribute their expertise not only frees up your time but also ensures that every task is handled by someone skilled. Trust me, embracing this collaborative approach will pay immense dividends, leading to greater success, efficiency, and personal growth.

Redefine Beauty: You Don’t Need a Six-Pack to Be Beautiful

If I could have a 20-minute conversation with my 20-year-old self, this would undoubtedly be the core of our discussion. As women, we often face immense pressure to conform to narrow beauty standards: a “cute face, tiny waist, with a big behind.” The reality is, if you have a visible six-pack, you likely don’t have much “junk in the trunk” – and speaking for myself, I quite like my curves. True beauty is absolutely not about achieving an impossible ideal of perfection. It’s about accepting and loving every part of yourself, flaws and all. It’s about celebrating your unique physique and recognizing that self-love is the most potent enhancer of beauty. The more genuinely you love and appreciate yourself, the more radiant and beautiful you become in the eyes of the world, and more importantly, in your own.

Relax and Enjoy: Have an Effing Drink (or Two!)

Seriously, hot damn, have two! This isn’t a promotion for excessive drinking, but a reminder to sometimes just let loose and enjoy life’s simple pleasures without overthinking. Drinking, in moderation, should be about being social, unwinding, and allowing yourself a moment of carefree fun. It’s going to be okay. You’re not going to gain 10 pounds from one margarita, or encounter some catastrophic event. Release the anxiety and rigid rules you might impose on yourself. Chill the eff out and savor that damn margarita. Life is about balance, and sometimes that balance includes responsibly enjoying a drink with friends, laughing, and simply being present in the moment.

Heal and Grow: Heartbreak Sucks, But It Gets Better

It’s remarkable to reflect on how much personal growth has coincided with the journey of FFF. When I first started this blog, I had never experienced a serious relationship; I “dated” but didn’t truly call anyone my boyfriend until I was 21. Heartbreak, while incredibly painful, possesses a powerful capacity for transformation. It will inevitably make you stronger, deepen your self-love, and force you to define what a significant other truly means to you. It provides invaluable perspective on what you genuinely desire in a partner and in life. While heartbreak undeniably sucks, it absolutely gets better. During these challenging times, it’s crucial to surround yourself with positivity and channel that newfound energy into discovering what truly brings you happiness and fulfillment.

Cultivate Quality: Choose 5 Great Friends Over 100 Acquaintances

Be intentional with your relationships. This often means having a smaller, more intimate circle of truly important people in your life, but investing significantly more quality time with them. The concept of “popularity” is just a word, often superficial and fleeting. If your mom and sister are your best friends, you’re undoubtedly doing something right. Prioritize loyalty, stay true to yourself and your genuine friends, and fill your life with laughter. Embrace your unique personality and only dedicate your precious time and energy to those who reciprocate your care, support, and effort. True friendship isn’t about numbers; it’s about depth, trust, and mutual respect.

Step Outside Your Comfort Zone: Challenge Yourself, It Will Pay Off

I recently delivered a talk at the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota, and my concluding message was precisely this: true success doesn’t emerge from a place of comfort; it originates from venturing beyond it. Get accustomed to feeling uncomfortable, because that’s where genuine growth happens. Life becomes incredibly boring when you’re not challenging yourself, when you’re stuck in a monotonous routine. Crave more, strive for more, and dare to explore what possibilities lie beyond your perceived limits. Embrace new experiences, tackle difficult tasks, and consciously push your boundaries. The rewards – new skills, resilience, and profound personal satisfaction – are immeasurable.

Manifest Your Dreams: You Want It? Go Get It.

Here’s an undeniable truth: you don’t get what you don’t ask for, or what you don’t actively pursue. When I made the bold decision to quit my full-time corporate job two and a half years ago, it was a massive risk. At that point, my income from FFF wasn’t yet matching my corporate salary, but I knew with absolute clarity what I wanted. My passion was to work for myself, to transform my deepest interests into a thriving career. There was no clear roadmap, no one who could simply tell me how to achieve this. I understood then that I had to take a monumental leap of faith and figure it out myself. This principle applies to all areas of life: if you desire something, you must actively pursue it. Want to travel to Spain? Go. Want to master the guitar? Start learning. Stop talking about your aspirations and start taking decisive action. Your dreams won’t materialize through wishful thinking; they demand your initiative and perseverance.

Trust Your Intuition: If You Don’t Know, You Know.

Someone shared this profoundly insightful piece of advice with me during a period of heartbreak, and it has resonated ever since. We often hear the saying, “if you know, you know,” implying a clear, undeniable certainty. However, I believe that if you *don’t* know, deep down, you still *know*. This speaks to the power of your gut instinct. Your intuition is a remarkably accurate guide, often pointing you toward the right decision even when your conscious mind is still grappling with uncertainty or doesn’t have all the answers. Learn to quiet the external noise and listen closely to that inner voice. It’s a powerful compass that rarely leads you astray, guiding you through life’s complexities with a wisdom that transcends logical reasoning.

Happy December! May your month be filled with reflection, growth, and the courage to embrace your most authentic self.
