From Long Distance to Shared Space: Embracing Our New Life in Minnesota

Today marks a truly monumental shift in my life and for our relationship, as Mark, known to many as @DaFunkShow on Instagram, officially moves to Minnesota! The excitement is palpable; you can practically feel it radiating from this screen. For over nine incredibly long years, Mark and I have navigated the complexities of a long-distance relationship. We shared our high school days, but since then, geographical separation has been our constant companion. The anticipation for this moment has been building steadily, day by day, over the past year and a half of this “Long D” journey, as we affectionately called it. The dream of living in the same place has been a powerful force, pushing us through countless challenges and sad goodbyes.

The reality of a long-distance relationship is far from romanticized movie scenes. Each visit required meticulous planning, often involving intricate travel logistics, and inevitably ended with a heartbreaking farewell. For the better part of our first year doing long distance, I found myself shedding tears at least three times a week. It’s an arrangement that demands relentless effort, unwavering commitment, and profound understanding from both partners – a dynamic neither of us had experienced before. We learned, often through trial and error, the crucial role of open and honest communication. Tools like FaceTime became our lifeline, bridging the miles and allowing us to stay connected, to be truly present for one another. “COMMUNICATION, PEOPLE!” became our mantra, and it’s a lesson that proved invaluable.

After a year of navigating the ups and downs, the daily struggles and triumphs of maintaining our connection across states, we both reached a turning point. The realization hit us: we had spent enough time apart. The yearning to simply wake up next to each other every morning, to share the everyday moments, grew too strong to ignore. The decision to finally move in together felt like a colossal weight being lifted from my chest. I could breathe again, knowing that the days of constant goodbyes were nearing their end. Six months have flown by since that pivotal decision, and now, the day is finally here. I get to joyously welcome Mark into our new home, right here in the beautiful state of Minnesota. It’s not just a move; it’s the beginning of a whole new chapter we’ve dreamed of for so long.

Creating Our Shared Space: Navigating the Joys of Cohabitation

WEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!! For anyone who has endured the trials of a long-distance relationship, you absolutely understand this overwhelming surge of relief and pure happiness. The idea of living with Mark, and once again having a roommate, fills me with immense joy. For the past two years, I’ve been a “lone soldier,” thoroughly accustomed to having things precisely my way within my own sanctuary. But now, it’s time to don my “sharing hat” once more and embrace the beautiful art of compromise. This journey began with Step 1: thoughtfully allocating our second bedroom. Given that Mark will be working remotely, it was an easy decision for it to become his dedicated home office. And honestly? That sounds perfectly fine to me!

Our new rental space spans a comfortable 1,300 square feet, but what truly defines it is its open-concept layout. Essentially, it’s one expansive living area, which presents us with an exciting design challenge: lots of wall space and open areas just waiting to be filled with personality and functionality. While Mark claimed the second bedroom for his office, I still needed a dedicated spot for my own creative endeavors and work. That’s where my new ladder desk comes into play – a perfect solution for an open floor plan. I actually stumbled upon this particular Ladder Desk during a West Elm sale last summer, and I knew instantly it was the one. Despite its full price of $279, which is quite reasonable compared to many desks on the market, I decided to “bite the bullet” and make the purchase. The absolute best part, a detail that brings me immense relief, is that West Elm handles the assembly directly in your home. No fiddling with instructions, no missing screws – just perfect, hassle-free setup!

My Ideal Workspace: Functionality Meets Style

PRAISE THE LAWD for professional assembly! While I’m bursting with excitement to give you a full home tour once everything is perfectly settled, I wanted to share a sneak peek into my new workspace. My desk is strategically positioned adjacent to the kitchen, a layout that couldn’t be more ideal for my routine. Historically, this proximity has facilitated countless (and often humorous) shouting matches with Linley across the room. Now, it means easy access to coffee, snacks, and the general hub of our home, ensuring I don’t feel isolated while working.

I’m a huge advocate for incorporating greenery into any space, especially a workspace. Not only is it aesthetically pleasing – it even aligns with the Pantone color of the year! – but it also significantly enhances the overall atmosphere. Plants bring life, reduce stress, and can even boost productivity. Surrounding my desk with lush greens makes the area feel more vibrant and inspiring. Complementing my new desk is my beloved chair, which I’ve repurposed from what was previously designated as the second bedroom’s decor. This chair, also a fabulous find from West Elm, now proudly serves as my primary desk chair. Interestingly, it’s become a point of playful contention between Mark and me.

In all honesty, Mark absolutely despises this particular chair because, in his words, “it’s not ergonomic.” He insists on needing more back support, which I can appreciate from a practical standpoint. However, I, on the other hand, find it absolutely PERFECT, thank you very much! Its aesthetic appeal and the way it completes my workspace vision are paramount to me. Plus, I snagged it on sale a few months ago, reinforcing my golden rule: “Gotta look for those sales at West Elm! I never buy anything full price… SHHHH!” It’s a testament to finding pieces that resonate with your personal style and budget, even if they spark a little debate within the household.
