Unearthing My True North

One challenge many ambitious individuals, especially young entrepreneurs, often face is the difficulty of “Saying No.” It’s a struggle I know intimately. The allure of new opportunities, each promising growth, learning, or financial reward, can be incredibly exciting. This initial enthusiasm often leads me to sideline my practical capacity and fearlessly accept offer after offer. The consequence? My current workload has become absolutely overwhelming, pushing me to a point where I’m juggling so many different projects that sleep has become a luxury rather than a necessity. While this intense period of overcommitment has been entirely my own doing, it has also become a powerful, albeit challenging, learning experience on my journey as a budding entrepreneur.

Just a month ago, I made a strategic decision to reduce my hours at Anytime Fitness to a part-time schedule of 20 hours a week. My aim was clear: to open up more valuable time in my schedule, allowing me to dedicate more energy and focus to my blog, Fit Foodie Finds, and to cultivate relationships with various freelance clients. This move was intended to create space for creative growth and deeper engagement with my passions. However, what followed was a whirlwind of new prospects. With the newfound excitement and perceived availability, I found myself adding a wide variety of different freelance projects to my workload, quickly filling – and then overflowing – the schedule I had just tried to lighten. This experience has become a vivid lesson in the delicate balance required between seizing exciting opportunities and maintaining a sustainable pace. To illustrate the intensity of my current commitments, here’s a breakdown of all the projects currently on my plate. I’ve marked with an asterisk (*) those that are fairly recent additions.

Current Workload Overview

  • Anytime Fitness: (20 hours/week) My foundational role, offering consistent engagement with the fitness community and administrative responsibilities.
  • Designer Whey: (4 Recipes/Month – Approximately 3 hours/week) This involves creative recipe development, meticulous testing, food photography, and crafting compelling content tailored for the brand’s audience.
  • Anytime Health: (3 Recipes/Month – Approximately 2 hours/week) Similar to Designer Whey, but with a distinct focus, requiring unique culinary approaches and content creation strategies.
  • Fitfluential Instagram: (5 hours/week) *new* A fresh commitment focused on curated content creation, strategic engagement, and managing a specific brand presence on this highly visual platform, demanding consistent interaction and storytelling.
  • Yoga Sculpt Corepower: (At least 3 classes/week – 6 hours/week; more if I sub) Teaching dynamic yoga classes is physically and mentally demanding, requiring class planning, energetic instruction, and strong connection with students. Substituting adds unpredictability and additional time.
  • Yoga Sculpt Hockey Team: (2 Classes/week – 3 hours/week) *new* A specialized teaching role, adapting yoga principles for athletes, which demands specific instructional methods tailored to athletic recovery and performance enhancement.
  • Corepower Management: (8 hours/week) *new* This managerial position adds another layer of responsibility, encompassing administrative tasks, team coordination, and operational oversight, delving into the strategic aspects of the business.
  • Fit Foodie Finds Recipe Creation/Blogging/Social Media: (15-25 hours/week) This is the core of my entrepreneurial venture, involving everything from innovative recipe development and testing to crafting engaging blog posts, managing website content, and maintaining a vibrant presence across multiple social media platforms. This category is highly variable and often exceeds the allocated hours.

TOTAL Estimated Weekly Commitment: 62-72 hours/week

The Emotional Toll of Overwork: A Personal Reckoning

The relentless pace of this schedule became starkly apparent last week when I realized I hadn’t had a single day off – a pattern that, regrettably, extends into the current week. This demanding rhythm, entirely of my own making, reached a critical breaking point. Sunday, a day typically reserved for rest and personal rejuvenation, instead became a crucible of emotional release. After working a full day at Corepower, a relatively new addition to my already overflowing schedule, I returned home utterly drained. What followed was an unexpected and overwhelming eruption of tears. This wasn’t a reaction to my work at Corepower; it was 100% built-up stress that finally found an outlet after an intensely long and demanding week.

I am not typically prone to crying, but when I do, it often carries me back to a vulnerable period in my life – specifically, to the times when I struggled significantly with an eating disorder and severe depression. This profound connection is unsettling and serves as a powerful reminder of how detrimental unchecked stress can be to one’s mental health and overall well-being. The paradox of my situation is that I genuinely love every single project and opportunity I am currently involved in. Each endeavor brings me joy, challenges my capabilities, and contributes positively to my professional growth. However, the sheer volume of these commitments has transformed these otherwise amazing opportunities into sources of immense pressure, injecting negative energy into my life rather than the fulfilling, positive experiences they are meant to be. This moment of emotional catharsis was a significant wake-up call, signaling unequivocally that something fundamentally needs to change.

Beyond Complaints: A Strategic Approach to Work-Life Balance

This reflection is not intended as a complaint about my busy schedule or the choices I’ve made. Rather, it serves a much deeper, more constructive purpose: to meticulously write everything down, evaluate my current state, and identify a clear path forward, because this unsustainable pace cannot continue. The necessary shift might involve strategically stepping down from certain commitments, or perhaps it’s about rigorously improving my time management strategies and setting clearer, firmer boundaries. The exact solution is still evolving, but the imperative for change is undeniable.

I am incredibly fortunate to have some truly amazing mentors in my life, individuals like Steph, Blake, Shannon, and Angela, who have consistently offered invaluable guidance and wisdom. What is particularly striking is that each and every one of them has given me the exact same advice regarding this very issue. Their collective wisdom underscores the universal nature of this struggle and the fundamental principles required to navigate the complexities of work, ambition, and personal well-being successfully. Their consistent counsel has highlighted the importance of taking action.

The Quest for Purpose: A Compass for Intentional Decision-Making

During a recent coffee meeting, Stephanie, one of my most insightful mentors, provided guidance that resonated deeply with my current predicament. She is exceptionally skilled at coaching through such dilemmas, and her primary suggestion was both simple and profound: to truly think about and define my “purpose.” This isn’t just about identifying career goals; it’s about understanding the fundamental “why” behind every action, every commitment, and every opportunity I pursue. “Why am I doing what I am doing?” This seemingly straightforward question holds the key to unlocking more intentional and sustainable decision-making.

Once this core purpose is clearly articulated, it transforms into an incredibly powerful filter. Every new opportunity, every request, and every potential project can then be meticulously evaluated through the lens of this defined purpose. Does it align with my overarching “why”? Does it contribute meaningfully to my long-term vision? If the answer is no, then saying “no” ceases to be a difficult act of rejection. Instead, it becomes a simple, logical, and empowering step in protecting my true purpose and highest priorities. This approach fundamentally shifts the emotional burden from declining opportunities, reframing it as an essential act of self-preservation and strategic alignment. It’s a paradigm shift from passively reacting to opportunities to proactively shaping my path forward with clarity and conviction. While I am still very much in the process of articulating my definitive purpose, the journey of self-discovery has begun, and the initial insights are already proving invaluable in navigating this complex entrepreneurial landscape.

Charting a Sustainable Path Forward: Embracing Self-Awareness and Strategic Action

So, this is precisely where I find myself in my career right now: actively engaged in the crucial process of identifying and defining my core purpose. It’s a significant moment of profound self-awareness, acknowledging the unsustainable patterns I’ve inadvertently fallen into and committing wholeheartedly to a more deliberate, purpose-driven approach to my work and life. The realization that even passion projects can become overwhelming when accumulated without strategic oversight is a crucial, albeit tough, lesson learned. The journey of defining my purpose is an ongoing endeavor, one that demands deep introspection, honest evaluation of my priorities, and a willingness to make difficult, yet necessary, choices to achieve a healthier work-life balance.

Thank you for offering your ear and your time to read these thoughts and challenges this morning. Sharing this personal journey, even in its rawest and most vulnerable form, is an essential part of my process of moving forward and processing these experiences. It’s incredibly comforting to know there’s a supportive community out there willing to listen, understand, and empathize with the complexities of building a dynamic career while striving for personal well-being and mental health. This shared understanding reinforces the idea that we are all on a path of continuous learning and growth.

Despite this period of intense internal reflection and re-evaluation, life continues to offer vibrant moments of joy and connection. Today, I am looking forward to a much-needed break from the screen to enjoy a beautiful day with my dear friend Lauren from Me and the Mountains and my girlfriend B. We plan to ride bikes and explore the vibrant shops in Uptown, embracing the simple pleasures of camaraderie and outdoor activity. Tonight marks another exciting professional engagement: my very first cocktail event as part of the Healthy Living Summit, an opportunity to network and connect with like-minded individuals. And all day tomorrow, I will be downtown Minneapolis, fully immersed in the conference activities, absorbing new insights and forging valuable connections. This weekend, I will be taking a much-needed break from active blogging to fully engage with these experiences and recharge my batteries. However, for those interested in following my adventures and insights in real-time, I encourage you to definitely follow my happenings on Instagram! This blend of reflection, personal connection, and professional engagement is all part of my larger commitment to finding a sustainable, joyful, and purpose-driven way forward.
