Unlock Your Full Potential with the “Coming Down the Ladder” Workout
The “Coming Down the Ladder” workout isn’t just another routine; it’s a dynamic approach to fitness that keeps your body guessing and your metabolism firing. This unique structure, where you decrease reps with each round, challenges both your physical endurance and mental fortitude. By combining strength-building exercises with powerful plyometric movements, you’ll not only enhance muscle tone and definition but also significantly improve your cardiovascular health and overall athletic performance. It’s the ideal regimen for anyone looking to achieve a high-intensity, full-body burn in a minimal amount of time, making it incredibly efficient for busy schedules or when space is limited.
The Power of Bodyweight Training: Fitness Anywhere, Anytime
One of the most compelling advantages of this ladder workout is its reliance on bodyweight only. This means no excuses about gym access, heavy equipment, or complicated setups. Bodyweight exercises are incredibly versatile and effective, leveraging your own mass for resistance. They’re fantastic for improving core stability, balance, flexibility, and coordination – skills that translate directly into everyday life and enhance other physical activities. This makes the “Coming Down the Ladder” workout an indispensable tool for travel, ensuring you can maintain your fitness routine no matter where your adventures take you.
Scandinavia Awaits: Fueling Adventures with Functional Fitness
As the countdown to my incredible Scandinavian journey begins, a mix of excitement and anticipation fills the air. In just four short weeks, I’ll be immersing myself in the breathtaking landscapes and vibrant cultures of Norway, Denmark, and Iceland. This trip isn’t just about sightseeing; it’s about embracing outdoor adventure, and that requires a strong, resilient body. This very workout will be my trusty travel companion, ensuring I stay energized and capable for every hike, paddle, and exploration.
Norway: Fjords, Friends, and Outdoor Exploration
Our Norwegian adventure kicks off in the charming city of Bergen, where we’ll reunite with our dear friend Lars. Having been an exchange student at our high school, Lars knows the area intimately, promising an authentic experience in downtown Bergen for our first two days. Following this urban immersion, we’ll head to the stunning Geirangerfjord region for six days. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Our primary goal here is to maximize our time outdoors, whether it’s through exhilarating hikes up majestic mountains, exploring the serene waters by kayak, or simply soaking in the unparalleled natural beauty. A quick search for Geiranger, Norway will instantly show you why this destination is a dream for any nature lover.
Copenhagen: A Danish City Escape
After the rugged beauty of Norway, our journey continues to Copenhagen for four days. This will be a delightful shift to an urban adventure, exploring the city’s rich history, modern design, delectable cuisine, and vibrant street life. From iconic landmarks to hidden gems, Copenhagen promises a blend of culture and charm. Unlike Norway, where we have a personal guide in Lars, we’re diving deep into research for our Copenhagen visit. We’d absolutely love to hear your recommendations!
Iceland: Land of Fire and Ice
Our grand Scandinavian tour culminates with a three-day stopover in Iceland. Here, we’ll return to the embrace of nature, anticipating breathtaking landscapes, geothermal wonders, and unique geological formations. Iceland is a destination unlike any other, offering endless opportunities for outdoor exploration, from glaciers to volcanoes. Similar to Copenhagen, we’re actively seeking insider tips for making the most of our short but impactful time here. Your experiences and suggestions would be invaluable!
For both Copenhagen and Iceland, we’re eager for recommendations on where to stay, the best places to eat, and must-do activities. We’ve always found that the most authentic and memorable travel experiences come from word-of-mouth suggestions. We’re open to all ideas and truly value hearing about your adventures in these incredible locations!
Master the “Coming Down the Ladder” Bodyweight Workout
This workout, inspired by the fantastic routines from Nourish Move Love, is an absolute powerhouse. I’ve incorporated similar ladder-style workouts into my fitness journey before (check out others here and here), and this one truly delivers. The blend of sustained strength exercises with explosive plyometrics is, in my opinion, the most effective way to achieve comprehensive fitness. I’ve specifically designed this to be a bodyweight-only routine, ensuring it’s perfectly portable for your travels. However, if you’re a true fitness beast craving an extra challenge, feel free to incorporate light dumbbells or resistance bands to amplify the intensity.
This workout is an ideal fit for my upcoming Scandinavian adventure. I’ve set a personal goal to engage in some form of exercise for at least 8 out of the 16 days of the trip, even if it’s just a quick 20-minute AMRAP (As Many Rounds As Possible) or a focused 30-minute circuit. This ladder workout provides the perfect framework to achieve that goal, keeping me strong and ready for all the exploration ahead.

Your Guide to the “Coming Down the Ladder” Bodyweight Workout
Instructions:
Before you begin, ensure you perform a dynamic warm-up for 5-10 minutes, including light cardio and mobility drills, to prepare your muscles and joints. Once warmed up, follow these steps:
- Begin by performing each exercise for 10 repetitions.
- After completing all exercises for 10 reps, take a 30-second rest.
- Next, perform each exercise for 9 repetitions.
- Rest for 30 seconds.
- Continue this pattern, decreasing by one rep for each round (8 reps, then 7 reps, and so on) until you complete a round of just 1 repetition for each exercise.
Maintain proper form throughout. Listen to your body and modify exercises as needed. Conclude your workout with a 5-10 minute cool-down, focusing on static stretches.
The Exercises: Descriptions & Benefits
Each exercise in this ladder workout is chosen to maximize calorie burn, build functional strength, and enhance overall agility. Here’s a breakdown:
-
180 Burpees
How to: Start standing. Drop into a squat, place hands on the floor, and jump your feet back into a plank. Perform a push-up (optional). Jump your feet back to your hands, then explode upwards into a jump, rotating 180 degrees in the air. Land softly, facing the opposite direction, and immediately proceed to the next rep. For the next repetition, you’ll rotate 180 degrees back to your starting direction.
Benefits: A full-body powerhouse, combining strength (push-up), cardio (jump), and plyometrics (jump and turn). Excellent for endurance, agility, and explosive power. Targets chest, shoulders, triceps, quads, glutes, and core.
-
1.5 Push-ups
How to: Start in a strong plank position, hands slightly wider than shoulder-width. Lower your chest towards the floor until it’s just above the ground. Push halfway up, then lower back down to the starting position (chest almost touching the floor). Finally, push all the way back up to a full plank. That completes one repetition.
Benefits: This variation significantly increases time under tension, building incredible strength in the chest, shoulders, and triceps. It enhances muscle endurance and promotes greater muscle activation compared to a standard push-up.
-
Criss-Cross Squats
How to: Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, toes pointing slightly out. Lower into a squat, keeping your chest up and core engaged. As you rise, lift one foot and cross it behind the opposite leg, tapping the toe lightly on the floor. Return to the starting position and immediately lower into another squat. On the next rise, cross the other foot behind the opposite leg. Alternate which leg crosses with each rep.
Benefits: Targets the glutes, quads, and inner/outer thighs while also improving balance and coordination. Adds a dynamic element to the traditional squat, engaging stabilizing muscles more intensely.
-
Reverse Plank Step-in + Tricep Dip
How to: Start in a reverse plank position (seated on the floor, hands behind you with fingers pointing towards your feet, hips lifted so your body forms a straight line from shoulders to heels). From this position, step one foot in towards your hands, then the other, bringing your knees towards your chest while maintaining the lifted hip position. Then, keeping your feet planted, bend your elbows straight back to perform a tricep dip, lowering your hips slightly. Push back up to the reverse plank position. That’s one rep.
Benefits: A compound exercise that works the glutes and hamstrings (reverse plank), core (step-in), and triceps and shoulders (dip). Great for posterior chain strength, core stability, and upper body pushing power.
-
Single Leg Glute Bridge + Toe Touch
How to: Lie on your back with knees bent, feet flat on the floor, hip-width apart. Extend one leg straight up towards the ceiling. Engaging your glutes, lift your hips off the floor, pushing through the heel of your planted foot, until your body forms a straight line from your shoulder to the knee of your planted leg. At the peak of the bridge, reach the hand opposite to your extended leg and try to touch the toe of the extended leg. Lower your hips back down with control. Complete all reps on one side before switching to the other leg for the next round.
Benefits: Excellent for isolating and strengthening the glutes and hamstrings, improving hip mobility, and enhancing core stability. The toe touch adds a balance and flexibility challenge, engaging the obliques and shoulders.
