Hello, fellow adventurers! Linley here. For those who follow my travels on @linleyshands, you’ll know I recently embarked on an incredible journey through Croatia and its neighboring regions. It was truly an experience of a lifetime, and I couldn’t wait to sit down and share every detail of this amazing adventure with all of you. But first, how did this dream trip to Croatia even come about?

The Inspiration Behind the Journey: Discovering Croatia’s Charm

Croatia had never really been on my personal travel radar. My limited exposure to the region was primarily through historical mentions of the Bosnian War, which certainly didn’t paint a picture of a vibrant holiday destination. Thankfully, I’m fortunate enough to be dating someone whose family is incredibly adventurous, and Croatia had long held a special place on their travel wish list. This year, Cole’s wonderful mom, Mary, celebrated her sixtieth birthday. Instead of a traditional celebration, she decided she wanted to commemorate this milestone by kayaking along the stunning Croatian coastline. And honestly, why not? This bold and adventurous spirit set the stage for an epic 13-day excursion. While Croatia was our primary focus and where we spent the majority of our time, our adventure also led us to the breathtaking landscapes of Montenegro and the charming cities of Switzerland.

Smart Travel Planning: Leveraging Credit Card Perks and Flight Strategies

Preparing for such an extensive international trip requires thoughtful planning, especially when it comes to maximizing value. My partner, Cole, and I made a strategic decision at the beginning of the year to apply for the Chase Sapphire Reserve travel card. We knew our summer and autumn schedules were packed with travel plans, and this card offered unparalleled benefits that perfectly aligned with our needs.

Our decision was based on several compelling advantages that make it an excellent choice for frequent travelers:

  • Generous Bonus Miles Deal: The initial bonus miles offer was substantial, providing a fantastic head start on accumulating points for future trips and significantly reducing travel costs.
  • Priority Pass Select Membership: This exclusive perk granted us access to over 1,300 airport lounges worldwide, transforming long layovers into comfortable, relaxing experiences. These lounges often provide complimentary food, drinks, Wi-Fi, and a quiet escape from the bustling terminals, making the travel journey itself much more enjoyable and less stressful.
  • Global Entry and TSA Pre-Check Credit: The card covers the application fees for both Global Entry and TSA Pre-Check, streamlining the security and customs process upon return to the U.S. This saves valuable time and reduces travel stress significantly, allowing for smoother airport transits.
  • Triple Points on Travel and Dining: Earning 3x points on all travel and dining expenses meant our everyday spending and trip-related purchases quickly added up, accelerating our ability to earn free flights and hotel stays. This is a crucial benefit for anyone who frequently dines out or travels.
  • Numerous Annual Perks: Beyond these core benefits, the card offered a host of other annual perks, including travel credits and various protections, further enhancing its value proposition and justifying its annual fee.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve proved to be an invaluable asset. Not only did we relish the comfort and convenience of airport lounges – truly a little piece of heaven during our travels – but the points we accumulated allowed us to book three additional flights for upcoming summer adventures. It was an absolutely wonderful and rewarding experience that made our international travel much more accessible and enjoyable.

Navigating Flight Bookings: Finding the Best Deals to Croatia

Finding affordable flights to Croatia, especially on relatively short notice, required some diligent searching. We began our ticket hunt only two months before our planned departure, which can often lead to higher prices. Direct round-trip tickets from Minneapolis to Croatia were consistently upwards of $1,000, a figure we aimed to reduce. Given that our trip would conclude with friends residing in Bern, Switzerland, we made a strategic decision: fly round-trip to Zurich instead. This alternative allowed us to secure tickets for a significantly lower price – just $500 round-trip on American Airlines. From Zurich, a short and affordable connecting flight on Croatia Airlines, costing merely $80, took us directly to our Croatian destination. For a last-minute booking, we were incredibly pleased with these cost-effective arrangements, proving that flexibility and a willingness to explore alternative routes can yield substantial savings when planning your Croatian adventure.

An Unforgettable Itinerary: Exploring Croatia and Beyond

Our grand European adventure spanned 13 incredible days, kicking off in late May and extending into early June. This period marks the delightful beginning of Europe’s tourist season, offering pleasant weather without the peak summer crowds. Our group consisted of ten enthusiastic travelers, and to ensure a smooth and organized experience for such a large party, Mary wisely entrusted the majority of our trip arrangements to Adriatic Kayaking Tours. They offer a range of pre-designed trips on their website, but for those seeking a truly personalized experience, they excel at tailor-making itineraries to suit specific preferences and group sizes, making them an ideal choice for a diverse group.

The Adriatic Kayaking Experience: A Guided Adventure

We embarked on their renowned “Best of the Balkans” week-long tour, and truly, it was an unparalleled experience. Our journey was expertly guided by two incredible individuals, Ivon and Ivor. These aren’t just guides; they quickly became cherished friends. Their knowledge of the region, its history, and its hidden gems was exceptional, and their accommodating nature made every day effortless and enjoyable. They anticipated our needs, shared captivating stories, and brought a genuine warmth to every interaction, making us feel completely at ease. Before this trip, I confess I harbored a common misconception: that traveling with a tour company was inherently more expensive than independent exploration. Adriatic Kayaking Tours unequivocally proved me wrong. Their meticulous planning, the quality of their service, and the sheer value they provided were outstanding. I would wholeheartedly recommend booking with them again and again – they set a new standard for guided travel in Croatia and the Balkans.

Croatia: A Journey Through Ancient Cities and Island Paradises

Our Croatian odyssey commenced with five exhilarating days of kayaking, paddling our way to various enchanting islands scattered off the Dalmatian coast. After our flight from Zurich, we landed in Dubrovnik, where we dedicated a full day to immersing ourselves in its vibrant history and culture. Dubrovnik, often hailed as the “Pearl of the Adriatic,” captivated us with its ancient charm. Our day was packed with classic tourist activities, allowing us to soak in the city’s unique atmosphere:

  • Strolling the Historic City Walls: Walking atop Dubrovnik’s formidable city walls offered panoramic views of the terracotta rooftops, the shimmering Adriatic, and the bustling Old Town below. It’s a journey back in time, revealing centuries of history and offering stunning photo opportunities at every turn.
  • Savoring Gelato: No European city experience is complete without indulging in creamy, delicious gelato. Dubrovnik offered plenty of delightful options to satisfy our sweet cravings, perfect for a warm spring day.
  • Visiting Game of Thrones Filming Locations: For fans of the iconic series, exploring the real-life King’s Landing was a thrilling experience, bringing fictional worlds to life amidst stunning medieval architecture and familiar backdrops.
  • Feasting on Fresh Seafood: Being right on the coast, Dubrovnik’s culinary scene is dominated by incredibly fresh, perfectly prepared seafood. Every meal was a delight for the senses, from grilled fish to succulent shellfish.
  • Discovering Croatian White Wine: As someone who typically doesn’t favor white wine, I was utterly surprised and delighted by the quality of Croatian white wine. It was some of the best I’ve ever tasted, offering a crisp, refreshing complement to the local cuisine, especially seafood dishes.

While Dubrovnik is undeniably gorgeous – every corner felt like a meticulously crafted movie set – a day and a night truly suffice. The city, particularly during the day, can become incredibly crowded due to its popularity as a cruise ship port. We were eager to embrace a more serene pace, and so, after our city exploration, we gladly boarded a 1.5-hour ferry to Lopud Island. This idyllic haven became our home for the next five days. We settled into an adorable hostel offering modest yet comfortable accommodations, lovingly run by an 85-year-old Croatian gentleman who proudly produced his own wine. It was an absolute dream, a tranquil escape from the bustling mainland and an authentic taste of island life.

Croatia Highlights: Island Explorations and Natural Wonders

Each day on Lopud brought a new kayaking adventure, leading us to different islands or charming coastal towns, offering a unique perspective of Croatia’s stunning natural beauty. The first five days of our Croatian journey were packed with unforgettable moments:

  • Kayaking to Koločep Island: A delightful paddle led us to Koločep, where we enjoyed invigorating hikes through lush landscapes and a most delicious seaside lunch, sampling fresh, local flavors directly from the Adriatic.
  • Exploring Mesmerizing Sea Caves: We had the incredible opportunity to paddle through breathtaking sea caves, marveling at the geological formations and the interplay of light and water that created truly magical underwater displays.
  • Swimming in Pristine Azure Waters: The Adriatic Sea around the Elafiti Islands boasts some of the bluest and clearest water I have ever encountered. Swimming in these pristine conditions felt like a dip in a natural, perfectly refreshing swimming pool.
  • Daily Grilled Fish Feasts: Our culinary experience was elevated by the constant availability of incredibly delicious grilled fish, fresh from the sea, served almost every single day. Each meal was a testament to the simplicity and quality of Croatian coastal cuisine.
  • Visiting the Trsteno Arboretum: A visit to Trsteno introduced us to the oldest arboretum in the world, a truly serene and historically significant botanical garden offering a peaceful retreat and stunning ancient plant collections.
  • Discovering Croatia’s Secluded Beaches: Unlike typical sandy beaches, Croatian beaches are often rocky, hidden within secluded coves, and utterly stunning. They offer a unique charm and a sense of discovery, perfect for those seeking privacy and natural beauty.

Every single aspect of our trip felt new, exciting, and utterly amazing. I must admit, I’m not the strongest kayaker, so some paddling sections presented a genuine challenge. However, I would choose an active, explorative vacation over a static beach holiday any day. And why not combine both? My only hiccup was a day spent battling a mysterious Croatian flu, which confined me to the toilet for a good 12 hours. At one point, I even contemplated writing a dramatic farewell note to my mom – but thankfully, I pulled through! Thank God, indeed!

I cannot stress enough how truly exceptional our tour guides were. We shared countless laughs, learned so much about the region, and genuinely felt that our best interests were always their top priority. The communal meals we shared on Lopud, with freshly prepared local dishes and lively conversation under the stars, were arguably my favorite memories. On day six, we caught an early ferry back to the mainland. Our next destination was the captivating region of Kotor, situated within striking distance of Montenegro, where we embarked on a beautiful hike before making our way across the border into our next adventure.

Montenegro: From Adriatic Coastlines to Majestic Mountains

I must confess, the inclusion of another country on our itinerary was a complete surprise to me during this family trip. Furthermore, I had never even heard of Montenegro before this incredible journey. Let me tell you, it stands out as one of the most breathtakingly gorgeous places I have ever had the privilege to visit. The sheer natural beauty of Montenegro is simply astounding, offering a dramatic contrast to the coastal charm of Croatia.

A picturesque view of the stunning mountains and a serene lake in Montenegro

Our journey took us on a scenic three-hour drive, winding up and down into the majestic mountains of Montenegro. The transition from Croatia’s sun-drenched beaches to Montenegro’s rugged, verdant peaks was seamless and captivating, offering us truly the best of both worlds. We arrived at Camp Grab, nestled alongside the pristine Tara River, late one evening. Our late arrival meant we couldn’t fully appreciate our surroundings until morning. After a delicious Montenegrin meal, we settled into cozy camp-style bunks for the night. Waking up the next day felt like stepping into a fairy tale. Before us lay the breathtakingly beautiful turquoise waters of the Tara River, which naturally forms a border between Montenegro and Bosnia. We were enveloped by untouched mountains and pristine terrain, a truly magnificent and humbling sight.

Camp Grab is much more than just a campsite; it’s an authentic Ethno Lodge, perfectly situated amidst the dramatic mountains. They specialize in offering a wide array of guided outdoor adventures, catering to virtually any thrill-seeker’s imagination. During our stay, we indulged in the exhilarating experience of white-water rafting on the Tara River – an absolute highlight! We also found time to relax by the river’s edge and within the comfortable lodge. While a few brave souls ventured into the water for brief swims, be warned: the Tara River, fed by glacial runoff, is absolutely frigid! It’s an invigorating dip, to say the least.

The stark contrast and seamless transition from the coastal vibrancy of Croatia to the serene, rugged beauty of Montenegro’s mountains was something I deeply appreciated. Camp Grab excelled not only in adventure but also in its culinary offerings, providing amazing meals crafted from fresh, local ingredients of the region. Homemade cheese, tender veal dishes, and exquisite pastries were just a few of the delightful tastes we savored. It was the perfect, memorable conclusion to the family portion of our trip. After bidding farewell to Montenegro, we embarked on a picturesque drive through Bosnia, continuing our journey towards Switzerland (a detailed post on our Swiss adventures will be coming soon!). Meanwhile, the rest of Cole’s family opted for car rentals, driving further up the stunning Croatian coast, where they continued their active exploration through climbing, hiking, and, of course, taste-testing an abundance of homemade schnapps. Cole and I are already planning our return to Croatia, specifically to dive deeper into its climbing and hiking opportunities in the near future.

Essential Tips for Traveling in Croatia: Make Your Trip Unforgettable

Having experienced Croatia’s diverse landscapes and rich culture firsthand, I’ve gathered some invaluable advice to help you plan and make the most of your own unforgettable Croatian adventure. These five tips are designed to enhance your journey, ensuring you discover the true essence of this magnificent country and create lasting memories:

  • Embrace the Road Trip: Renting a car and exploring Croatia by road is, without a doubt, one of the best ways to experience its unparalleled beauty. The coastal mountain roads are simply spectacular, offering breathtaking vistas at every turn. Navigation is surprisingly straightforward, and the freedom of having your own vehicle allows you to stumble upon countless hidden gems – secluded beaches, charming villages, and panoramic viewpoints that organized tours might miss. It’s an adventure in itself, allowing for spontaneous stops and discoveries.
  • Opt for Authentic Accommodation: Forget the impersonal, often overpriced, tourist-centric hotels. Croatia is brimming with characterful small Airbnbs and cozy hostels that offer a far more authentic and intimate experience. Take the time to research and book a stay in a smaller town or village. These accommodations often provide a deeper insight into local life, incredible hospitality, and unique charm that larger establishments simply cannot match. Plus, they are often more budget-friendly and offer personalized recommendations.
  • Connect with the Locals: Croatians are renowned for their warmth, hospitality, and accommodating nature. Don’t shy away from striking up conversations! Engage with the owner of your Airbnb, chat with restaurant staff, or simply greet people in a local café. You’ll find that locals are often eager to share insights, recommend hidden spots, and offer a genuine connection that can transform your trip from a mere visit into a truly immersive cultural experience. You never know what incredible stories or unexpected adventures a simple conversation might unlock.
  • Immerse Yourself in Nature: Croatia is an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise. Beyond its world-famous coastline, the country boasts dramatic mountains, lush forests, and an abundance of natural wonders waiting to be explored. Dedicate time to “getting outside.” There are numerous stunning national parks, such as Plitvice Lakes or Krka, where you can enjoy world-class hiking, thrilling climbing routes, and serene camping experiences. Whether you’re kayaking the sea, cycling through vineyards, or trekking mountain trails, Croatia offers endless opportunities for active exploration and breathtaking scenery.
  • Explore Every Region: To truly appreciate Croatia, resist the urge to stick to just one area. Each region offers a distinctly different flavor, from its cuisine and local produce to its activities and cultural nuances. Spend time on the vibrant coast, kayaking through archipelagos and swimming in the clear blue sea. Then, venture inland to experience different hiking trails, explore historical towns, and discover a contrasting way of life. And, crucially, try as much of the local food and drink as possible! Croatia is famous for its fresh seafood, olive oils, unique cheeses, and, of course, its potent and delicious homemade schnapps and grappa – essential elements of the Croatian cultural experience that tell a story of tradition and hospitality.

Croatia is more than just a destination; it’s an experience that captivates the soul and leaves an indelible mark. From the ancient stones of Dubrovnik to the serene islands and the rugged grandeur of the Montenegrin mountains, every moment is an adventure waiting to unfold. I hope this guide inspires you to embark on your own journey to this incredible corner of the world. Happy travels!
